The contact’s daughter owns a 2017 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, his daughter noticed that oil was leaking underneath the vehicle. The contact stated that he checked the oil level of the vehicle and noticed that the vehicle was low on oil. The contact added 3 quarts of oil to the engine. The contact stated that while his daughter was driving 50-55 MPH, the vehicle started making abnormal sounds. The contact’s daughter veered to the side of the road. The contact met his daughter and checked the oil level. The contact noticed that the oil level was 2 quarts low and topped off the oil; however, the failure reoccurred the following day and the vehicle was jerking. The warning message “Reduced Power” was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the PCV valve had caused a rear main seal failure, which damaged the engine. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and the contact inquired why his daughter’s vehicle was not included in GM Technical Service Bulletin No.: 14882 but the manufacturer referred the contact to NHTSA for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.

PCV valve froze forcing pressure to blow the rear main seal while driving. Oil went everywhere yet no engine warning light ever came on, just a strong odor. I did not realize what had happened until I parked and found a puddle of oil trailing me. Fortunately I got it to a mechanic in time before the engine locked. However, GM has posted service bulletins and acknowledges this defect yet has not issued a recall. In terms of safety this could cause you to be stranded in an unsafe location or unsafe conditions such as below freezing temps with no heat while waiting for a tow truck assuming you have cell reception to call one.

Entered vehicle and smelled exhaust inside. Checked tail pipe and it was clear and blowing out exhaust. Pulled out of driveway and got sudden smell of oil. About 200 feet down the street smelled burning oil. Turned around and went home, car was dying and would not start after. Had to be towed to be checked and was told engine was flooded along with other issues from driving that short distance the way it was. NOT ONE ALERT SHOWED OR IS NOW SHOWING ON DASH OR DISPLAY. Nothing about oil, no check engine, no warnings of any issues. Has been maintained and just had an oil change. Is driven daily and had no alerts or issues. Now we are stuck paying over $6k to replace the entire block when there was no notification that any maintenance was needed. Any notification that pops up, we check and fix immediately. In the shop still and techs say no lights or warnings are coming on still when they turn the car on. Not even check engine when it’s blown! We bought a newer vehicle to avoid these issues and now we are stuck dropping that much or more to replace engine block or buy a new suv all together. Seeing as the economy is horrible right now, we really can’t afford to do either!!

At 129,000 miles the car threw a p0420 code for the catalytic converter being bad. Yes, it is available for inspection. The car burns up oil like it gets paid for it at about the rate of a quart every other week or so which is a known issue for this type of vehicle but Chevy refuses to issue a recall for this year for some reason. The catalytic converter failure is directly related to the excessive engine oil consumption. The check engine light is illuminated.

The contact owns a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked outside of the dealership, the contact heard an abnormal ticking sound coming from under the front hood of the vehicle. The contact notified the dealer of the issue and was informed that the noise would go eventually cease after driving the vehicle for a while. The issue persisted and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer. The vehicle was inspected and the contact was informed that the timing chain and assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that a year later while driving at an undisclosed speed, the failure recurred and the vehicle shuddered and lost motive power. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was first towed to the residence and then towed to the dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the failure was caused by excessive oil consumption related to the timing chain assembly repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 107,000.

My son was driving on I75 and University Dr in MI and all of a sudden there was a loud noise when everything shut down-power steering, hazard lights, etc and with no dashboard emergency warning light. He is strong and was able to get it to the side of the road. And he could have been stuck in fast moving traffic. The dealer Moran Chevy said it was a problem with the main rear valve PVC? Getting water in it and freezing causing engine to be destroyed. Online a number of complaints with same problem. TSB 14882 GM replaced some VIN number engines but not others including my Equinox.
