A small amount of engine coolant is discharged to cool and lubricate the mechanical seal's sliding surface, which then evaporates, leaving dry residue. This condition, referred to as "Temporary Leak - Dry Coolant Residue," does not warrant replacement. The water pump should only be replaced for an "Active Leak Leak - Wet Coolant Residue/Drips."

If debris becomes lodged in the mechanical seal, it can create a temporary gap allowing coolant to bypass the seal. This condition is also temporary and will resolve once the debris clears, so replacement is not needed at that point.
