- #11582122April 10, 2024STRUCTURE:BODY:HATCHBACK/LIFTGATE:SUPPORT DEVICE/STRUT
The contact owns a 2021 Toyota Sienna Hybrid. The contact stated that after pressing the rear lift gate button, the rear liftgate door failed to open, trapping the dog inside the vehicle. The contact stated that the rear liftgate door was later manually forced open by two good Samaritans and the dog was retrieved. The vehicle was later taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the failure was caused by a faulty passenger’s side liftgate strut bolt. The liftgate strut and bolt were replaced and the vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 67,000.

Spontaneous and random: Blinkers come on, radio volume goes up or down when turning the other way, CarPlay USB shuts off and on, hiccups when accelerating (when ECO kicks on/in)…everything points to an electrical/computer issue. Purchased used from a dealership and noticed these issues after the 3-day return window.

There has been a "whining" noise or "hum" upon acceleration noticed for several months to a year, could be longer, but getting worse over time. There is also a delay when pressing on gas for the vehicle to actually accelerate. I have had many instances where I am almost hit from behind because of this delay. Obviously the person's behind me have been following me entirely too closely, but nonetheless, scary. This is our primary vehicle for our family, which carries 4 precious boys. I am aware of the CSP already in place for this issue but have been told that my specific vehicle does not qualify for the customer protection program. That seems very odd given the amount of vehicle's listed as "affected"(83,700) sienna's and 66,500 highlanders. You cannot tell me that there are not more out there like mine that are having the SAME problems but being told "not covered". I do not think anyone should have to drive a vehicle with children in it that you are unsure when your transmission is just going to go out or fear getting hit from behind because of the delay in acceleration. Please please do something about this in order to hold toyota accountable!

Speakers make an ear piercing loud noise that lasts about a second. If this sound were to occur during travel, could cause distraction leading to harm, or with young kids in the car, possibly damage their ears. This problem has been random and not experienced by a dealership. No warning messages or symptoms to the problem. Problem first appeared 6 months ago.

Excessive heat coming from all vents and under steering wheel after long time driving. I am very concerned that the vehicle may be caught on fire and then cause injuries or casualties.

Approximately 4-5 times it has felt like the brakes have slipped or let go for a very brief moment. I have either been braking over bumps, or braking going downhill. It is a slipping feeling, like is felt when briefly sliding on a patch of ice, or hydroplaning. It occurs for only a second or two. It has happened when conditions were dry.

On Sunday, [XXX] (at 78,793 miles), our MY17 Sienna XLE AWD suddenly displayed a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) and a message advising "Check AWD System". The vehicle disabled its cruise control system and AWD system, and no longer displays the Eco indicator when traveling at constant speeds on flat terrain. There was no obvious change to vehicle shifting behavior; the shifting has always been sluggish and occasionally "hangs" at higher RPM before downshifting. There were no symptoms or MILs prior to this incident. We consider AWD to be a safety feature when driving with snow or rain, and we frequently traverse Box Elder Canyon where the summit is nearly 6K feet above sea level. We stopped by an auto parts store (O'Reilly) where they pulled codes from the OBD-II sensor. Their reader showed 3 codes: P2714, P0741, and P2757). The vehicle is currently at Young Toyota in Logan, UT. Young Toyota advised that while the vehicle codes are consistent with bulletin [XXX] , that it is not included by Toyota under their list of affected transmissions. The service agent said a solenoid that governs locking the torque converter was "stuck". Since it is outside the 60K miles/60 month powertrain warranty, Toyota is unwilling to provide goodwill towards a fix. The dealer recommended a "software fix", which may or may not solve the issue, and that a transmission replacement would follow. I am simply in shock that a vehicle we purchased new, have carefully maintained (including through Toyota's maintenance plan for 60K miles), could potentially have a failing transmission below 150K miles. This is the UA80F 8-speed automatic transmission, which I believe was first-equipped on the MY17 Sienna, replacing a reliable 6-speed A/T. This vehicle is a tire eater. It does not matter what the brand of tire it is- Michelin, Bridgestone, or Yokohama, tires last, at best, 18 months of local soccer mom driving. After five sets of 50K mile, or better rated tires, at $800 to $1200 hundred per set, I think it is time that Toyota owns up to the fact that something is wrong with this model (4x2) vehicle. In my mind thjis is similar to the Toyota airbag situation only on a smaller scale. The manufacturer always has an out, such as, did the customer have the vehicle aligned, have the tire pressure checked, rotate tire on schedule, was it driven off road? My concern is that just about any driver would expect to get 30 to 40 thousand miles of normal driving from a set of premium tires. If the tires wear abnormally quickly while expecting "normal" tire mileage, this puts the driver in danger due to unexpected tire failure and possible tire related accident. This needs some data analysis.

- #11577720March 16, 2024VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: WARNINGS
Vehicle was driving on a slow traffic local street at roughly 10MPH. Spacing between car in front of me was around 30 ft. I was gliding towards front and ready to brake. Suddenly the vehicle start to accelerate hard by itself without driver’s operation. I tried to engage brake / gas pedal and was not helping. Front collision system did not activate like it suppose to. I ended up turn sharp right towards road curb and hit pole at average speed of 30mph or less. No air bag deployed. I then switch to Park. No warning lights pop up. All safety features on vehicles were turned on before the incident. Whats weird is the car is functioning normal now after incident. I contacted Toyota USA and waiting for feedback.

- #11576843March 12, 2024VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL
The contact owns a 2004 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 MPH the vehicle suddenly experienced unintended acceleration and the speed of the vehicle increased to over 90 MPH. During the failure, the braking system had failed and would not stop the vehicle while pressing the brake pedal. The front passenger was able to view the fuel pedal was stuck to the floor and was able to physically pull the fuel pedal up from the stuck position and the vehicle's speed was reduced. The incident lasted for approximately 10 minutes. During the incident, the police were on the scene. A police report was later filed at the scene and the vehicle was towed to the local dealer. The contact was informed by the dealer that the failure was due to a missing fuel pedal pen. No further information was available. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact expressed experiencing emotional stress and anxiety during and after the incident. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 200,000. The VIN was not available.

- #11576496March 10, 2024VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL, STEERING, UNKNOWN OR OTHER
My vehicle steering/control has frozen a few times in the past 18-24 mos. This happens for me in wet conditions at slow speeds while trying to turn, usually to the right. The car also seems to slow on its own and pull to the side at these times. This has also happened while reversing out of a parking spot. I do not recall seeing any lights engage but I am more focused on steering the car safely and exterior factors at these times so I haven't noticed the dashboard. It feels like the power steering fails, and I have no control. Thankfully, I have not been moving at high rates of speed, nor been in a position to go into the lane of on-coming traffic or had someone in a lane near me, and have been able to hold in position or manually turn as much as needed. Steering seems to return once the turn is complete. I have been fearful of hitting someone or being hit from behind each time. My mechanic has been unable to recreate the experience and was unable to suggest a direct answer. I see others have had similar experiences and the same lack of answers from even Toyota. Having come across this website and seeing responses here to this exact problem I have had, I am hoping for more information or a recall soon!

I just read something about a recall affecting certain models of toyota vehicles under "unexpected movement." I have experience similar situation with my toyota sienna 2023 when in drive mode coming to a turn or turning into a driveway, slowly pressing on the brakes, the vehicle continues to unexpectedly move as I'm pressing the brakes, then it responds a few seconds after. It doesnt happen often, but it did happen maybe 5 times or less, ever since I got the car around summer time 2023. Luckily there were no cars in front of me during these few situation, it could've been an accident.

I am an owner of a 2018 Toyota Sienna LE. The Vehicle has an issue with the safety connect system. Dealer first states that the cause is the data handling being off, called Toyota turned it on and waited for a few days and still did not work. Called Dealer to make an appointment for service, dealer advised that they reset the DCM twice and to wait 24-48 hours to see if it works. It still does not work. No lights present on the overheard place where the SOS Safety connect Button is located.

The intake valve became burnt/stuck, causing my car to lose all compression on cylinder 3. The CEL came on, flashing, and the car immediately started driving rough and not accelerating. I had the vehicle brought to 2 different auto shops that confirmed the issue. My and my childrens' safety were at risk as soon as we tried to turn right onto a high speed road and my car started the flashing CEL and would not accelerate. There was no warning before this incident.

After 80,000 miles have a loud whirling sound coming from rear, after inspection and online investigation found many many others with same issue, the dust cover and or o-ring doesn’t properly protect the rear bearing in the coupler. So while the fix is to remove the rear differential coupler, and replace the bearing with an improved version, seems Toyota has stopped supporting this, and no longer offers the improved bearing as a replacement part, but only supports replacing the entire rear differential coupling at $2000 for the part plus labor. While many have replaced the bearing without issues despite toyota not allowing it as a fix. So first it should be a recall as this is an obvious defect effecting thousands, but then to gouge owners for thousands when the fix doesn’t require a complete replacement of the rear differential coupling assembly.
