- #11706893December 23, 2025ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING, POWER TRAIN
This vehicle has had numerous problems since I leased it. To summarize, at times the vehicle randomly shifts out of the ECO mode, usually into the SNOW mode. The engine has also raced, hesitated, bucked, rattled and vibrated when trying to change gears. Sometimes, these actions are subtle and sometimes they are borderline violent. This happens more frequently when the engine is cold. Additionally, the AEB system has activated a number of times while in stop and go traffic, even though the vehicle in front was moving forward. On at least 3 of these occasions, i barely avoided being rear-ended by the vehicle following me. The final issue that I have noticed is a problem with the odometer. It has appeared to work normally most of the time, but I have noticed times where I didn't think the odometer accurately reflected the distance I had traveled. I was able to synch the odometer with the trip odometer on a local road that I was quite familiar with. The trip odometer registered 1.8 miles while the odometer only registered 1 mile traveled. All of these issues happened multiple times and are intermittent. I have had the vehicle to Hyundai dealers on 5 occasions, and they claim to have not been able to duplicate any of the problems that I have been consistently logging in to a "diary" that represents a list of when I have noticed these issues. I have been in constant contact with Hyundai, but they promised to send out a factory rep, then reneged, instead relying on the local service techs. Said techs had the vehicle for nearly 2 weeks, but only drove it for 16 miles (until I called AFTER a determination was made and they hurriedly drove it an additional 22 miles to give the appearance of a more complete exam), using less than a quarter tank of gas. To me, this wasn't a thorough exam and appeared to be a cover-up to avoid having to buy back the vehicle. Note: these problems have occurred on multiple occasions, therefore the date below is the lease date.

I was travelling East in the left kane on the southern state parkway in Long Island, NY. The car in fron of me stopped short. I had plenty of time to slow down, then my car brakes locked up and I was almost rearended. Fortunately the driver behind me was alert and moved to the shoulder to avoid contact.

The car in front of me, 8 to 10 feet ahead, slow down and turn on their blinker. My car slammed so hard on its break. It threw me and my dog forward. It never gave us a warning until it slammed. There was plenty of time for me to slow down, but also the car was partially already in the turn lane. There is then 223 seconds where my car will not move forward. I am a sitting duck to cars coming behind me.

I am submitting this complaint regarding excessive and abnormal oil consumption in my 2019 Hyundai Tucson. Despite regular maintenance and oil changes performed according to manufacturer recommendations, my vehicle consumes oil at an excessive rate, requiring frequent oil top-offs between oil change intervals. I have experienced low oil levels with little to no warning, which poses a serious safety concern due to the risk of engine failure while driving. The vehicle does not show visible oil leaks, suggesting internal oil consumption. This issue appears to be consistent with numerous consumer complaints involving Hyundai vehicles of similar model years and engines. The dealerships have been unhelpful and dismissive, often stating that the oil consumption is “within normal limits” or requiring lengthy oil consumption tests without offering a permanent solution. I feel I am being given the runaround rather than receiving a meaningful repair or accountability for what appears to be a known defect. Excessive oil consumption can lead to engine damage, stalling, or sudden engine failure, which is a significant safety hazard for myself, passengers, and other drivers. Hyundai dealerships have failed to adequately address or correct the issue, despite the widespread nature of similar complaints and known engine issues associated with Hyundai vehicles. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this matter further, as this defect affects vehicle safety and reliability and appears to be part of a broader pattern with Hyundai engines.

Multiple times the car has locked the brakes when there was a car several car lengths in front of me. This has resulted in me nearly being rear ended three different times. The force of the stop has also caused me to have neck and back pain. This is u safe and will result in injuries. There are many reports about this on Reddit.

Oil component failure causing extreme heating within the engine and catalytic converter which poses risk for engine fire. This oil consumption issue was addressed by the dealership who ran a test to see how much oil was consumed. The test results showed that the vehicle was burning oil at a high rate and would ultimately result in engine failure. The low-oil light has never come on indicating a need for an oil change. Despite this, I have constantly pulled my own dip stick and got changes every 2,000 miles. For this make and model, they required a change every 5,000 miles. When I notified Hyundai Corporate over this concern. They claimed due to it being outside of warranty, that it does not matter what my engine light has been doing since I got the car, nor the issue with the oil consumption, they refuse to address any of these problems as being a manufacturing problem. The maintenence has been kept up since I got the car, so the manufacturer is not acknowledging the constant issue with Hyundai Tuscon engine dangers. If a fire were to occurr, I was told this is not Hyundai's responsibility due to me not being the first owner and it not falling within warranty. After the combustion test, Hyundai claimed that they refilled my oil. When I checked my dip stick after only driving 100 miles, the image attached will show the resulting levels. My oil light is still not coming on despite this. Even when it has been much lower than the pictured level. This, paired with the super heated catalytic converter due to the oil consumption, is going to cause an engine fire and is not fair to the consumer.

My 2018 Hyundai Tucson has been experiencing oil consumption issues for over a year. It began at around 80k miles, when it should have been covered by warranty but they made me pay out of pocket for an oil consumption test only to ultimately recommend a top end cleaning, which I also paid for and it did not solve the problem. This is a known issue with Hyundai, and they have settled many lawsuits but have consistently denied any repair or solution for me. I am burning about 5 quarts of oil every week, and this is a problem they refuse to help solve.

My 2019 Hyundai Tucson, VIN [XXX] , has developed engine knocking, which may indicate internal engine failure. A mechanic has suggested a possible loss of cylinder compression, though the exact cause has not been confirmed. Hyundai vehicles from similar model years have experienced engine failures related to bearing wear and metal debris, leading to stalling, loss of power, and complete engine failure. These failures present a serious safety risk, particularly if the engine fails while driving. I am concerned that this defect could result in sudden loss of power or engine seizure, increasing the risk of an accident. I am submitting this complaint to ensure the issue is properly investigated and addressed. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

-The center display screen system failed. The screen intermittently glitches, strobes, freezes or goes completely black while the vehicle is in operation. This screen controls GPS/Navigation, backup camera display, vehicle settings and warning alerts. The vehicle and system are available for inspection upon request. -The failure creates a significant safety risk. When the screen blacks out or strobes, I lose access to navigation, backup camera visibility, vehicle alerts and system controls. The strobing/glitching is distracting and unsafe while driving, and the loss of display during driving and parking maneuvers increases the risk of collision or injury to myself, passengers, pedestrians and other vehicles. -Yes, the vehicle has been brought to an authorized Hyundai dealership 5 separate times for the same issue. This dealership has attempted repairs, replacements, and troubleshooting of the screen system but the problem continues to occur. -Yes. The vehicle has been inspected multiple times by authorized Hyundai dealership service departments acting on behalf of the manufacturer. Hyundai corporate has also been contacted regarding the unresolved defect. -The primary symptom is sudden screen malfunction without warning, including flickering, strobing, freezing or complete black out. There are no consistent warning lamps prior to failure. The issue first appeared in August 2025 and has continued intermittently since that time. No collision, accident, injury or property damage has occurred as a result of this malfunction.

While driving on the highway at normal speed, the vehicle suddenly lost power and shut off without warning. There were no warning lights or messages prior to the loss of power. I was able to safely pull over, but the engine would not restart at that time and the vehicle required towing. The sudden engine shutdown occurred in active traffic and created a safety risk due to loss of propulsion. The vehicle later restarted, but I brought it to an authorized Hyundai dealership for inspection. The dealership diagnosed internal engine damage, including piston ring failure and cylinder wall scoring, and advised that the engine would need to be replaced. Since the incident, the vehicle has shown intermittent oil pressure warning lights and reduced performance. The issue has been confirmed by a dealer inspection. The vehicle is currently not considered reliable or safe for regular driving.

Two times while stopped or idling behind a car in traffic, my Hyundai Tucson 2023 has started accelerating on its own with the RPM increasing to nearly 8000 and lurching forward before I was able to apply brakes. Stop the car and restart. I have seen this described on other car message boards and hope the NHTSA will take this seriously. The dealership is not being helpful and claims they cannot reproduce it and it has not caused any onboard diagnostic codes.

Issue was first noticed in October 2025 - there are roughly 70k miles on the vehicle. It is a 2017 vehicle, and has regular service (oil, inspection). There was a class action lawsuit for this issue (wylie v hyundai), which was settled prior to the purchase of the vehicle. Vehicle stutters when shifting into and out of first gear. A local mechanic and hyundai both confirmed that it was a transmission defect. The Hyundai dealership initially thought it was an actuator issue, but has since said that it is a faulty gear assembly. it has a DCT (dual clutch transmission). Vehicle suddenly stops and is erratic when driving. Coming out of a stop risks the vehicle shuddering; going through an intersection or turning cross traffic is extremely dangerous as the vehicle could stop momentarily and cause a collision. Vehicle is unable to maintain flow of traffic. The problem appears to be widespread - there are various forums we found where others have this same issue. There were no warnings on the dashboard prior to the issue. When issue appeared a check engine light was displayed.

The contact's daughter owns a 2019 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that his daughter had parked the vehicle and left it unattended while in the on position. After approximately 10-15 minutes, the daughter attempted to shut off the vehicle by turning the ignition key from the front passenger side, but after powering off the vehicle rolled backwards down the driveway, also dragging the daughter. While rolling backwards, the front passenger door hit the concrete mail box, and the vehicle continued to roll across the street before stopping in the neighbor's yard. During the incident, the daughter attempted to activate the emergency brake, but was unsuccessful. As a result, the daughter sustained several bruises to the right leg/knee and the back area, which did not require medical treatment. The passenger side door and the concrete mail box were damaged. The police were called to the scene, but no report was filed. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were not yet notified of the incident. The failure mileage was unknown.

The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Tucson. While the contact's wife was driving at an undisclosed speed, several unknown warning lights illuminated, and the vehicle lost motive power. The contact's wife was able to coast the vehicle to the shoulder of the roadway. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed with engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was advised to have the vehicle towed to the dealer. In addition, the contact was informed of Campaign 953 (Extended Warranty on the Engine). The vehicle was later towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. In addition, the contact was informed of Campaign 953 (Extended Warranty on the Engine). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure by the dealer. The manufacturer initially agreed to a good-faith repair. The manufacturer declined the good-faith repair because the Campaign 953 requirement was not performed. The contact had not received information on Campaign 953. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.
