Total engine failure with no warning. Vehicle has approximately 106,000 miles. While driving on Monday [XXX], the car began shaking violently and the engine light began flashing. Fortunately I was only about a mile from a GMC dealership, so I pulled into Rice GMC Buick in Knoxville, TN. They informed me that there was a catastrophic engine failure and that a complete replacement would be necessary at a cost of $15,000 dollars. I live 100 miles away in Chattanooga, TN. I understand that cars experience some level of wear and tear, but a total engine failure at just over 100,000 miles when the car has been serviced at all regular intervals is very unusual. I recommend my case be referred to active investigation #PE25001. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

On [XXX], while traveling from Florida to Kentucky to visit family for the holidays, our Yukon XL began to make a noise that mimicked that of a car going over Rumble strips on the highway. This happened at approximately the Tennessee Kentucky state lines. We stopped the car and contacted OnStar who then ran a remote diagnostic and stated that they could not tell if anything was wrong with our vehicle and recommend seeking out a GMC repair center once we arrived at our destination. The technician at the GMC dealership after evaluating our vehicle told us that there was metal in the oil filter and that the engine would need to be replaced. Our Car was not safe to drive or return to our home over 800 miles away. No warning lights came on in the vehicle to warn us that the car was at risk or failing. We are still without out our car as another engine has not been secured by GM. Our Car is still in Kentucky at the dealership who found the problem and is inoperable. Our car is 9 months old and had only approximately 13,000 miles on it and all service has been completed at a GMC dealership. On [XXX] while on vacation out of state with my family our 2023 GMC Yukon XL Denali stalled out on [XXX]. After safely navigating through 5 o'clock traffic just outside of Atlanta, the vehicle would not turn over or even attempt to start back up. We contacted onstar for assistance and was advised to stay with the vehicle while they dispatched a tow truck. After approximately 2 hours we contacted onstar again and was advised a tow truck wouldn't be available until morning. We then were able to obtain a ride with Lyft that totaled over $100 with 5 people and was given a $50 credit. I was forced to use Hilton Honors points to book a hotel. Then after the next morning around 10am I was advised the tow truck was enroute to the car. I then took an Uber to Enterprise where I was able to get a rental vehicle. And made my way to the dealership that our Yukon was towed to. After speaking with the service advisor I was told they wouldn't even have a diagnosis for a couple weeks. So we proceeded to head home (with the rental breaking down and several other issues we had to overcome). After we were able to get another rental vehicle, we made it home around 2am. We returned this rental vehicle as it was not suitable for our family, and contacted GM in hopes to get a rental vehicle while our $120k vehicle is sitting in the parking lot of a dealership 8 hours from our home. Only to be told they'd allow $44/day for a rental and we would need to rent it initially and they would reimburse us after we submitted our receipts. Unfortunately $44/day does not get us anything that can accommodate our family and finances are not allowing for this at this time. So we are managing with 1 car. On 1/9, we received a call from the dealership stating our engine was locked up, non repairable and they were waiting for guidance from GM. Then on 1/23 I was then advised by my GM rep that she was transferring the case to someone else and they would advise when the new engine has shipped. The contact owns a 2021 GMC Yukon XL. The contact stated that while driving 65 MPH, the vehicle shut off with the message to restart the vehicle displayed. The contact was able to pull over and restart the vehicle after several attempts; however, the failure reoccurred soon after the vehicle was restarted. Due to the failure, the vehicle was initially towed to a dealer but was later towed to an independent mechanic. The mechanic performed a diagnostic test and diagnosed the vehicle with engine failure. The vehicle remained in the possession of the independent mechanic. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.

We purchased a new 2021 GMC Yukon Denali in July 2021.We have had continuous issues with the truck starting almost immediately after we purchased it and ending with a catastrophic engine failure despite only have ~81,000 miles on it. Even more concerning is that the engine failed while my two of my children were driving with 3 of their friends. The car seized up in the middle of a busy road while driving 55 mph. The kids had to coast to the side of a busy road where they exited the vehicle and waited for a tow truck. Despite regular oil changes and maintenance, we have experienced non-stop problems with the truck * Aug 2022 (29,470 miles): Engine wire chaffing relating to the fuel pressure sensor. Transmission slipping. * Oct 2022 (34,220 miles): “Grinding noises” related to brakes. Faulty brake sensor and brake replacement. * Nov 2022 (35,954 miles): Continued “grinding noises” * May 2023 (51,163 miles): Continued “grinding noises” which were again “shrugged off” by the dealership despite us bringing in the truck for the 3rd time related to this issue. Transmission slipping (transmission torn down, clutch assembly replaced, etc.) * Oct 2023 (62,365 miles): Continued “grinding noises” (4th time bringing the truck in for this reason). * Sep 2024 (81,000 miles): Catastrophic engine failure while driving on a busy road at 55 mph. Based on discussions with a wide range of mechanics, dealerships, shops, individuals within the automative industry, we have come to understand that the issues we have been facing with our truck are not unique. To be clear, we have experienced: i) the same problem repeatedly over a short period of time; ii) repeated unsuccessful attempts to fix the same issues; iii) a prolonged period for repairs where we did not have the vehicle; and iv) significant value loss due to catastrophic engine failure. Further, these problems compromised the safety of my family and has significantly disrupted our life.

On Christmas Eve my family and I were driving out of town on the freeway when my 2022 Yukon's engine started making very loud grinding, rattling noises and instantly started slowing down and losing power, there were no warning signs on the dash and the GMC app showed my vehicle was still in a healthy condition. We had no warning at all. The vehicle was towed to Corwin GMC and we were told we will need a total engine replacement. We have been waiting almost a month now with no update as to when it will be fixed.

Engine is consuming 3qt oil every 1,000 miles. Has been consuming oil since 34,000 mile mark and the transmission has been slipping where it revs very high before downshifting. GM has asked for an oil consumption test to be done and now we are 9,000 plus miles into it and they still say it's fine. This car is not worth the price. I can't even take it out of town due to needing the oil consumption every thousand miles by GM request. Complained about engine knocking at 22,000 miles and they said it was normal and I know it's not

I am writing the NHTSA to advise of a harrowing event involving the vehicle named above. I was driving my 2022 Yukon vehicle equipped with the 6.2L Ecotec3 V8 L87 Engine. As I was traveling, the vehicle suddenly without warning shut down. When this occurred all systems in the vehicle became completely inoperable; i.e., no power steering, no power brakes, nothing, Etc. I was lucky to be able to veer/coast into the Emergency Lane without incident. This situation also caused the vehicle to become almost un-towable, in that the towing company could not get the vehicle out of the Park position to allow the wheels to rotate. They had to use special Skid Plates / devices to essentially force the vehicle to Slide instead of rolling onto the towing vehicle. This added significate hazard and risk of injury because of the problematic situation of loading the vehicle in this manner literally inches from the active travel lanes and took much longer to load than it would have otherwise. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer. The Dealer replaced the Fuel Module and returned the vehicle. This information is being sent to GM as well. After this event I was concerned for driving the vehicle but now after reading about the recent NHTSA Investigation into Engine Failures I am much more apprehensive about driving the vehicle. Even if nothing happens individuals who have these vehicles have now lost significant value and face a very difficult time even being able to sell their vehicles at all, or at a much lower price than normal because of the known Defects. I hope this helps the NHTSA to further their Investigation of GM’s defective vehicles and get these vehicles repaired and/or replaced in a timely manner before tragedy strikes any individuals.

On [XXX] I was driving about 75mph on the freeway and suddenly the vehicle gear switched from drive to neutral. The vehicle dashboard read "vehicle condition not safe for shift" I tried to put the car back in drive by pushing the drive button but the vehicle was stuck in neutral. I pressed on the gas but it was not working since the car was in neutral. Since I could not use the gas to move forward, I could not go up on the ramp and was stuck on the busy freeway between the off ramp and the busy lanes of cars going 70+. The right rear end of my vehicle was in the offramp lane. I started to panic because I had my [XXX] daughter in the car. The steering wheel was completely locked and the rear axel was locked as well. There was no warning before the engine cut off. The electrical was all still working. I called AAA for a tow and 911 for CHP assistance since I was in dangerous spot. Took it to GMC Carlsbad Service, advisor Jason just called me and told me the engine had seized up and will most likely need the engine replaced. On 1/9/25 I had the car oil changed at the GMC service department in Escondido where I purchased the car. The vehicle has an open ticket and GMC is conducting a full investigation. I am told the whole engine will need to be replaced and will take 4 weeks from 1/22/25 to fix. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

My engine stopped while I was driving. Unable to accelerate and the car will not start and is dead. Transmission light and DEF service lights came on. Luckily I was able to pull over to safety, barely. It was towed to the GMC dealership and waiting for it to be looked at. There were NO warning lights that came on previous to when this happened. This is a HUGE SAFETY concern for GM and it needs to be a recall because many, many others have reported the same complaints.

The contact owns a 2017 GMC Yukon XL. The contact stated while parked and attempting to start the vehicle, the contact heard an abnormal knocking sound coming from the vehicle. The contact attempted to depress the accelerator pedal however, the vehicle failed to respond as needed. The contact stated that a dealer and an independent mechanic were contacted. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed and determined that the camshaft was not aligned. The contact was informed that the independent mechanic would be able to align the camshaft; however, if the failure persisted there would be a cost for the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The contact related the failure to N232430470 - Special Coverage (Camshaft Position Actuator Valve Solenoid - Bank 2 (Left Side) Exhaust); however, the VIN was not included in the special coverage program. The approximate failure mileage was 131,000.

The vehicle stopped, and I was unable to manually put it in Neutral. I had it towed to the dealership and was told that my engine was froze up. I have 25,000 miles on my Denali. This is not normal. My truck just "stopped" and would not move on a busy traffic road- why are the vehicles failing at less than 30,000 miles? I still owe quite a bit and now wondering what is going on with GM? I saw the video on Tik Tok about engine failures and this is my truck.

The contact owns a 2022 GMC Yukon XL. The contact stated that while his wife was driving 60 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power, prompting the driver to pull over to the shoulder of the roadway where the vehicle then stalled and was unable to be restarted. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the engine due to metal fragments being found in the engine. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Action Number: PE25001 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 44,000.

Without warning, the motor siezed and locked up on the interstate. It has been in the shop for 3 months and GM is giving me the run around on fixing it but the dealership has told me that this is a huge common issue and is happening to many other vehicles this year with this motor.
