Passenger and driver side rear door lock are inoperable from outside and inside. The issue has been widely reported by other vehicle owners. The root cause has been reported as water damaging the locking mechanisms. Volvo redesigned the mechanisms but has not issued a recall.

My rear door, driver-side, will not unlock. I cannot open it from inside nor outside. I have cycled door and child-lock actuators and no change to the condition. This is definitely a safety concern as whatever happened to the driver-side mechanism can happen to the passenger side also then how would passengers exit quickly?

- #11566797January 21, 2024SUSPENSION
Received a Suspension Service Required message on the gauge cluster. Online searching led to this from the NHTSA website: [XXX] I contest it is not accurate and it did not go far enough to protect consumers. Per the above, there is a logical condition in order to take advantage of the warranty which requires precisely 2 error codes to “prove” that the air suspension compressor needs to be replaced and can be covered under the warranty. My compressor fuse had blown per the bulletin. I replaced the fuse and the compressor started to work again. The error went away. I was still concerned of the safety of the vehicle (something caused the fuse to blow). I took it to the dealer to have them scan the codes to confirm the above warranty would cover the cost to replace the compressor - which by the way the entire intent of the warranty is to convey that the compressor is known to have a design defect. What this warranty is NOT is an exhaustive fault tree analysis to show all the causal paths that can lead to the root cause. However, because Volvo identifies one single logical fault path - I was not able to have my compressor covered under warranty. The reason the dealership gave me was that both error codes in the warranty would have had to come up in their scan in order to take advantage of it - and mine only showed 1 of the codes. Then I requested a quote and what was needed to fix the problem so that I could pay for it. Their quote was $1,088 for them to replace the air compressor and relay. Stop right there. That quote I received from Volvo was a clear cut and dry admission (from Volvo themselves) that only having received 1 error code is enough to justify the warranty - because one or both error codes leads to the same recommended replacement. Even still, I’m forced to pay for a known defective part that presents a safety issue. Not fair. This should have been a recall. Rear passenger door won’t open. We had freezing temps in Colorado, when I tried to open the rear door to get my 2 month old out of the car the door would not open. Apparently this is a known problem for this vehicle the rear door motors spontaneously stop working.

Air conditioning failed to function as soon as vehicle lease was up. Less than 45k miles on a 3 year old car. Stopped working, hot air blowing in the middle of summer no less. This does not appear to be a part that is on the maintenance interval list. This does not appear to be an isolated incident when researching this fault now over a year later. The climate control system failing on a new car on a part that cannot be reasonably serviced seems problematic to say the least. I asked the dealer to consider a good will repair on more than one occasion as I had literally just moved from a lease to a finance purchase. No luck on that.

When driving and stop in a traffic light, for example, the Volvo ignition going off and I have to re-start it. The problem is rooted probably in the fuse associated with Volvo's stop/start motor. I found that other models have had the same problem, like the recall#R39574 and the reference safety campaign #15V555000.If the fuse blows in traffic, it could increase the risk of an accident, especially a rear-end collision.

In cold weather, doors will not close back once opened. It just bounces back at you. Thought door was closed a few times and it flew open on highway when exiting. My niece was in the back seat. How is this not recalled with multiple complaints on the Volvo forum?

Park fails to engage when pressing the P button adjacent to the shifter. It will, however, engage 100% of the time when applying additional pressure. The button doesn’t actually travel any further when applying the additional pressure, but park will engage. It’s even possible to push the button down fully, hold it for several seconds, and then apply additional pressure to cause it to engage. The tactile response of the button occurs too soon before activation.

I OWNED A 2016 VOLVO XC 90 IN VERY GOOD CONDITION. IN EARLY SEPTEMBER 2023, I TOOK IT FOR AN OIL SERVICE. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, I NOTICED A WARNING LIGHT FOR LOW COOLANT AND WAS SURPRISED THAT I HAD TO POUR MORE THAN A HALF GALLON TO REFILL (THIS SOON AFTER SERVICE). A FEW DAYS LATER, I TOOK THE CAR TO HAVE BRAKES CHANGED AND THEY ALSO NEEDED TO REPLACE AN OIL/AIR SEPARATOR PART. AFTER GETTING THE CAR BACK, IT SAT ON DRIVEWAY FOR WEEK. UPON RETURNING FROM OUR TRIP, MY WIFE DROVE THE CAR AND IT STARTED SMOKING FROM HOOD WHILE ON [XXX] IN CHICAGO, NO WARNING LIGHTS SEEN. SHE WAS ABLE TO TAKE AN EXIT RAMP AND FIND AN EMPTY CURBSIDE SPACE TO PULL OVER. WITHIN MINUTES THE SMOKE TURNED TO FIRE AND VEHICLE BURNED EXTENSIVELY BEFORE THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED (~15 MINUTES LATER). THE INSURANCE COMPANY (STATE FARM) DECLARED IT A TOTAL LOSS AND SETTLED OUR CLAIM, HOWEVER WE DO NOT BELIEVE THEY TOOK ANY FURTHER ACTION ON INVESTIGATING THE REASON FOR FIRE. WE BELIEVE THE FIRE WAS LIKELY RELATED TO ISSUE WITH COOLANT SYSTEM. WE NOTICED A PUDDLE ON DRIVEWAY WHERE THE CAR WAS PARKED THAT LOOKED LIKE OIL, BUT IT DRIED QUITE QUICKLY SO WAS MORE LIKELY TO HAVE BEEN COOLANT. ON SEARCHING THE INTERNET FOR FIRE RELATED ISSUE FOR VOLVOS, WE FOUND A FORUM THAT DISCUSSED A SERIES OF FIRES (10-12) FOR 2016 VOLVO XC90 RELATED TO COOLANT SYSTEM ISSUE. APPARENTLY THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS, THOUGH APPEARS TO BE FOCUSED ON EUROPEAN DIESEL MODELS. IN DISCUSSING THE ISSUE WITH THE REPAIR SHOP THAT LAST SERVICED THE CAR, THEY INSISTED IT COULDN'T HAVE BEEN OIL RELATED AND MENTIONED PROBLEM COULD HAVE BEEN FROM RODENTS EATING THROUGH WIRES, BUT THAT SEEMS UNLIKELY TO ME. I have a 2016 XC90, been letting Volvo know of my oil consumption since Feb 2022 when I noticed more oil being used before changes were due! My vehicle failed the oil test performed on 12/6/23 at Volvo on Manchester in St Louis, and now this Volvo extended warranty won’t cover it. Why? Well, I never received anything from Volvo and wasn’t even aware until the service advisor told me to call. A “ticket” was put in with Volvo headquarters on 12/8/23 and they state that I’m out of the extended warranty, yet I NEVER had any opportunity to even get it since I didn’t receive anything! They want to replace where the current leak is, which is $2600, then do another test! This was my first actual oil consumption test! Despite bringing it to my advisor at the time, which I was well within these “extended warranty parameters” such as mileage, my advisor never suggested this test back in 2022. I was just informed in December 2023 there is a Volvo lawsuit regarding oil consumption. Apparently letters were sent out to Volvo customers of this “extended warranty” opportunity to fix the issue, which I never received anything! I was informed by the dealership to reach out to Volvo headquarters, which I have, a case was put in and 24 hours later I received an email stating they would NOT assist as I’m outside of those “warranty guidelines!.” Like I’ve advised them, how is an owner to know of this extended warranty if we weren’t notified!! it will be $2,600 to fix the current consumption THEN they want to do another consumption test to ensure it’s not leaking elsewhere!

Heat does not work in Hybrid Vehicle. Prevents windshield from being able to be defrosted in winter. Should be covered under warranty, however when I took it to the dealer they report that multiple Volvo have this problem and there is a part shortage. Because of this problem, the vehicle is unsafe to drive the vehicle in the winter because it won't generate enough heat to melt the snow and ice that hits the windshield.

Both of the rear doors fail to unlock and open from the inside or outside. This is a safety issue, as in a fire or accident, I would not be able to remove my children from the back seat of the car.

On a travel trip to Seattle, we stopped at few stop, and when my sons tried to exit the rear doors, both would not open. Neither from the inside or outside. Nothing worked. Upon searching, this is a very common issue with the 2016+ models. When inquiring with volvo, it will cost anywhere from 1000-2000 per door to fix the "locking" mechanism which they say can corrode. Ridiculous. This is a major safety issue if passengers can't exit. I've never had a car which a door can't be opened.

All of the electronics are malfunctioning, no navigation, possible airbag and seatbelt malfunction, warning lights on. I am concerned that all of the electronic safety systems are not working properly. Internal SOS button not working. Herb Chambers Volvo in Norwood, Ma. Service manager has confirmed that this is a problem with the 2024 XC90. The car is brand new and Herb Chambers Volvo does not have any available appointments for several weeks to address concerns. I also contacted Volvo USA and they were unable to assist. I have also requested that the area Volvo factory rep, Tom Laforte contact me and I have not heard back from him. In the meantime we are unable to drive our new Volvo due to these safety concerns.

The vehicle is equipped with wireless phone charger. I was charging my phone and could not lift it off the charger with my bare hand. According to the dealership test, their test started at 80 degrees Fahrenheit and tested after 10 minutes at 102 degrees Fahrenheit. The dealership stated that the charger is operating as designed. The phone was too hut to handle and could have caused an accident.
