The Ioniq 5 has a known issue with a part called the ICCU. When the part fails, which it seems to inevitably do despite multiple recall repair visits and software upgrades, the car ceases to be driveable. In advance of this moment when your multi ton vehicle turns into a brick you get a short warning saying pull over, but that is not always possible. The car starts loudly beeping and reduces its max speed to 12 mph, which is not great on the freeway. The ICCU is a huge safety problem, a known issue that Hyundai is well aware of, and the part needs to be redesigned and the NTSB needs to force Hyundai to extend greater warranty protections for this event. This just happened to me, the dealership says they have 8 other ioniq 5's in with the same issue and I am number 9 on an ioniq 5 iccu loaner car waiting list while the part is back ordered for at least one month. My car stopped at a stop light and fully blocked an intersection when it bricked as I came off the freeway, was super scary to sort out in the middle of the road and I was very happy that my twin toddlers were not in the back seat, i was not so happy I had to pay to have the vehicle towed and arrange a comedicly complicated way to pickup my kids due to this known issue parts failure.

On 1/3/2026 I attempted to charge my car using my at-home level 2 charger. When charging initiated, the breaker tripped. I reset the breaker and tried again, but the same issue repeated. I attempted to charge my car by plugging directly into a GFCI outlet using the level 1 charger that came with the car, but this tripped the GFCI breaker. I had enough battery to drive to the dealer, and Hyundai diagnosed the issue as an ICCU failure. In my particular case, I wasn't put in danger, since the failure did not occur while driving. But this model and other models based on this platform have experienced a pattern of failures with this component. In some cases, the ICCU fails while driving in such a way that the car goes into a limp mode before becoming inoperable. I'm grateful this did not happen to me. I felt it was important to report this issue if only as a record of one more ICCU failure associated with this model.

I purchased the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited edition car on 12/20/2025. On 01/03/2026, a warning light came on and said I needed to check my electrical system. I drove 3 miles home and made an appointment with the Hyundai dealership on 01/05/26. On the morning of 01/05/26, as I was attempting to drive the car to the dealership, a turtle symbol appeared on the dashboard and said power limited. Three blocks later, the warning sign popped up that said pull over immediately. I pulled over as far as I could but the car completely died right in front a no parking sign. I had to wait for three hours in the freezing cold to get the car towed to the dealer. After two days, the dealer confirmed that the ICCU unit had failed and it would be replaced under warranty. One month later, I still do not have my car back, as the part is on backorder. Luckily, we had not taken this car to the mountains 1 week prior, or we would have been stranded in the freezing cold with minimal cell phone reception.

ICCU failed 12/29/25, car inoperable and towed to dealer. Luckily this was in my garage , had it been on the freeway it would have been very dangerous and car goes into limp mode. Car red battery light and made chimes. Only has 25,000 miles on it. Has been at dealer since then with no resolution update.

ICCU needs to be replaced and is faulty.I had a warning on Friday and was able to jump my car, then a complete engine failure Sunday 2.1. The part is on back order, replacedment estimate not given (internet research says 1 week to 3 months) and I am in line for a loaner car even thought all parts are under warranty. The car is less than 2 years old and has less than 24k miles.

My electrical warning light came on for the second time in under a year. The first time I was pulling out of my driveway, so I was able to stop safely. This time I was a block from my house, so I was able to safely pull to the side of the road. In both cases the car was towed to the dealership and both were confirmed to be a bad ICCU. The first time I was able to get it fixed within the week. This time the dealership has said the part is on back order and there is no ETA.

My vehicle recently experienced issues charging. It would not charge using a Level 1 or 2 charger, but would allow limited Level 3 charging. After having the vehicle inspected by a Hyundai dealership, they confirmed that the ICCU had failed for the vehicle.

My 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 lost all power and stopped in the middle of a busy road. I had no power even when I pressed the gas. Nothing in the car worked, including the hazard lights, which made it even more dangerous as cars were speeding past me. I was finally able to call the police to come help and they set up a safe area. However, I was put in an unsafe situation while I waited for assistance from the police. In addition, there was no way to put the car in neutral once the power was off (at least I couldn't find a button or a switch to do that), which made it difficult to get it towed. I understand the car died on me because of faulty ICCU on my car. Btw, the car had just finished its software update earlier that day. I am not sure if this somehow contributed to the ICCU failure.

- #11714869February 1, 2026VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL, LANE DEPARTURE: ASSIST, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL
While driving at highway speeds (approximately 70 MPH) with the vehicle's Assistive Driving functions engaged, the Driver Monitoring System (DMS) malfunctioned. Despite maintaining constant visual attention on the road ahead, the system issued repeated, erroneous audio warnings claiming driver inattention. I attempted to adjust my head and eye position to satisfy the sensors, but the system failed to register my compliance and continued to cycle through warnings. Consequently, the vehicle initiated an unwarranted "fail-safe" maneuver and suddenly applied the brakes while traveling in the flow of traffic. This uncommanded, rapid deceleration created an immediate and severe risk of a high-speed rear-end collision with following vehicles. The failure appears to be a false-positive defect in the eye-tracking software logic and its integration with the braking system. The vehicle is available for inspection to analyze the system data logs.

On 1/15/2026, my 2025 Ionic 5 Limited AWD car with 11K miles on it suddenly lost power about 1/2 mile from my home. I pulled over to the side of the road and within seconds the car was totally dead (nothing worked). After waiting 1 1/2 hours (in an unheated car with outside temperatures in the 30's (F)) the car was towed to the dealership, where the ICCU was determined to be the problem. The dealership apparently has 3 other Ionic's waiting for new ICCU's. My car has been in the shop ever since, waiting for the replacement ICCU to be delivered to the dealership (delivery is apparently expected sometime in the next couple of weeks).

The 12 V battery failed within two years of the delivery of the car. I believe this is due to the design of the charging unit within it as many other others report the same problem.

Battery warning light went on as I left my house. Since this is an EV, naturally became concerned. Car was towed to Heritage Hyundai, Towson Md and I was later informed by the technician the ICCU went bad and this was a common problem for the Hyundai/Kia EVs which Hyundai/Kia have not fixed. The car is currently at the dealer's service department.

Diagnosis: ICCU and fuse failure. Situation: 1/17/26 No issues starting when starting/driving car to first store. Car started without issue and I drove to next store a few minutes away. Came out of store to start car and got a notification on dash to check electric vehicle system. Checked app and had error P1A9096 Air Flap Turned car off for a minute, turned car back on and still received the same error. Tried to drive back to house (only about 6 miles away) and realized the car was limited to 25 mph although no indication/notification of limit. Notification continued and I ended up getting a stop vehicle and check electrical system with flashing lights. Stopped and cycled off and on the vehicle a few times. Started vehicle and only check electrical system notification was on (no indication not to drive vehicle so I continued driving). Continued driving and heard what I believe was a pop noise and also got the notification to stop vehicle and check system. Pulled over turned vehicle completely off and checked app again. and Still only PA9096 error. Contacted Hyundai roadside. Truck driver contacted me shortly after letting me know they were on the way. Tried to turn vehicle around in parking lot so easier to tow. Vehicle limited to 1 mph. Vehicle died when I got in spot and wouldn't turn back on. Vehicle towed to dealer. 1/28/26 Over a week after issue, dealer diagnosed as ICCU and fuse failure.

The ICCU (integrated charging control unit) failed July 6, 2025 when the car had 6,800 miles on it. I was driving it on the road at the time and it suddenly would not go faster than 20 miles per hour. It was in the shop for weeks to repair. The replacement ICCU just failed again on January 31, 2026 at a mileage of 15,380. The car is inoperable and cannot be driven.
