The contact's wife owns a 2018 Ford EcoSport. The contact stated while driving approximately 75-77 MPH, the low oil pressure warning light illuminated, and the vehicle lost motive power. The contact was able to veer to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the oil pump tensioner had failed, causing the engine failure. The dealer determined that the engine and turbo needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Action Number: PE23015 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 52,608.

While driving on the interstate going 70mph, my Ford EcoSport's Engine oil pump light illuminated. Shortly after, the car began to slow down even though I was attempting to accelerate. This put me at a safety danger due to being in front of another vehicle who was also going around the same speed as I was. I was fortunate enough to be able to get off the road without getting in danger. When taken to Ford, they indicated that there was an issue with the motor and that it would need to be replaced.

Engine failure -- on 12/2/23 while driving the vehicle it shut off less than 2 minutes after I heard what sounded like a belt breakage on the car. The car would not start again. My safety was put at risk because I was driving on a busy street and the speed limit was 50mph. 1 day prior, the car slowed to about 40 mph or less after the engine light came on Then the wrench icon came on. I could not drive on the highway so I took the side streets to and from work. I started getting oil pressure warnings about 2 weeks prior but I just had my oil change done in October 2023. I did not know that I was getting warning messages until I looked at the FordPass app on 12/2/23 and saw several messages starting from 10/6/23 at 9:15am. The first message states " powertrain malfunction/reduced power" and another received on 10/6/23 at 11:48am states "Service Engine Soon Warning - The engine control system has detected that the turbocharger/supercharger is outputting lower boost then expected. Diesel equipped vehicles may indicate that the vehicle is operating in derate mode and may experience a loss of power." Another on 11/28/23 states "Charge System Fault Indicates that there is a 12V charging system fault". 11/29 1:09pm Service Engine Soon The powertrain control system has detected the system power supply voltage is lower than desired". Plus several other messages. I had the car towed to the Ford Dealership in Victorville and was told by the Service Advisor that the engine and turbo needs to be replaced. She said that the oil pump drive belt broke. I asked how this happens and she said the tech does not know but he does know that the turbo is consequential damage due to drive belt damage. I have also noticed that the gas mileage has significantly decreased over the past year or so. Also the brakes squeak when I put the car in reverse - this happened the day I drove the car off of the lot and the Ford rep said it was no big deal. There are other minor issues also.

On the evening of 12/20/2023 suddenly the loss of engine oil pressure with an illuminated oil pressure warning lamp came on and the engine started knocking loudly. Then as we pulled out of traffic into a parking lot spot it died and would not restart. We were in heavy traffic and if we were not able to exit as quickly as we did our family would have been stranded and blocking in the heavy traffic. Was able to start it after it cooled but the engine continued to knock and within 1 minute the oil pressure warning lamp came on. We have not taken it to a repair shop as it is at 61k miles. I had to have it towed home and are currently in a out of pocket rental. It will have to be towed for any type of service.

After receiving an oil change the day before and getting the “all good,” I set out for a cross state road trip to see family. Less than halfway through our drive, about 400 miles in, my 2018 Ford EcoSport shut down on the side of the highway. I could not get my vehicle to turn on or move. I was given a warning on my dash that stated I needed service on my vehicle and less than ten seconds later the vehicle would not turn on. Considering I was on the highway, I was more than lucky that I was able to pull over in time. We sat in the vehicle for four hours waiting for a ($400) tow - when the tow got there he spent an hour getting the vehicle onto skates. The engine is locked and my wheels will not turn. I towed it to the nearest ford dealership where they told me I had complete engine failure. The dealership is charging $2,500 to figure out exactly what went wrong with the engine, and another $7,500 to fix it. The car has less than 70,000 miles on it. It’s not under warranty as the cutoff is 65,000 miles. It’s not covered by insurance. I now live across the country from where my car is, meaning I currently don’t have a vehicle (and have not for this whole 3 month process).

Our company has purchased 8- 2018-2022 Ford EcoSports similar to the VIN on this complaint. 5 of the 8 purchased have required engine replacement due to oil pressure related issues. One had just 20k miles, one had mid 40K miles, one had 52K miles and another 68k miles. And we had another today with just 58K miles. This seems to be a chronic issue with these engines.

I have 69,800 miles on my car that is not even 5 years old. When driving to work this morning, I receiving an alert on my dashboard saying “low engine oil pressure”. I have heard about this issue and pulled over at a gas station to get my car towed to a Ford dealership. It is going to cost me about $8,000 to get a brand new engine in my fairly new car that is in great condition. This issue is a hazard to all owners and drivers on the road.

My 2018 Ford Ecosport issues began at 75,048 miles. I was driving on Highway 10 in North Ridgeville, Ohio attempting to get to the speed of 65 miles per hour when my Ecosport failed to accelerate. The engine light indicating oil came on. My life flashed before my eyes when other cars on the road failed to manuver around me, almost rear ending me off the highway. I had my Ecosport towed to a Ford dealership after this incident. I was told the oil pump and the oil pump belt had malfunctioned, which resulted in engine damage. Autonation Ford in Westlake, Ohio estimated an engine repair at approximately $7,000.

I was driving home on Christmas Eve with my daughter when my Check Engine light came on. Then the Low Oil Pressure alarm started going off and the car was driving sluggish. Any time I used the accelerator, the alarm came on. I parked the car and had it towed to an independent shop. They advised it was the oil pump and that the engine was not receiving any oil. Upon inspection, there was metal on metal in the engine. Now they have advised that I will need a new engine.

Engine failure due to known 2018 Ford Ecosport issue: While driving down the road oil pressure pump light flashed on, car slowed down to 30mph and started a ticking noise. Diagnosis: oil pump belt tensioner failed causing no oil pressure subsequently completely destroying the engine, turbo charger and vacuum pump. The Service adviser stated that the Ford company knows the problem with the oil pump tensioner exists, but will not acknowledge the problem. My cost for replacement, repairs and labor is $6,209.08 and not having a vehicle to drive as a mother of two I cannot afford these unexpected expenses on a well maintained vehicle.

While driving on the highway a “Low Engine Oil Pressure” came up on the screen repeatedly. We immediately pulled off the highway before the vehicle started becoming jerky/shaky while running. We attempted to add oil thinking that might be issue but when we went to run the car again it became harder to start up. The car was towed to a nearby mechanic shop where the diagnostic assessment came back saying that the oil pump is broken. The vehicle could not be repaired at their shop at needed to be re-towed specifically to a Ford dealership. The representative did tell us that this issue has been popping up more and more with ford ecosports. Had we continued to run the car any longer could have resulted in serious damage and ultimately failure of the engine, which could have had severe consequence such as losing control and crashing. Prior to the warning coming on there was zero indication that something may have been wrong- I drive quite a lot for work and throughout the week everything felt normal.

My car drove fine up until the 12th. I hoped in my car to go get some medicine at target which is 8 minutes away from them. My car began to make really loud noises and my oil light came on. I knew it was within the time for me to get another routine oil change. I bought one quart of oil just to hold me over for two days. I started my car to go home and my engine light and oil light and maintenance light all came on and my car would not drive over 45mphs. When you would press the gas, it would stall for a second. Thursday, I went for my oil change and was turned away due to the sound of my car and also the man smelled my dipstick and gas was in my oil. I was told to immediately take my car to the shop. The car shop has had my car for about a week and half and reached out at first saying that my problem was my camshaft and also turbo with a few other codes. I receive a class earlier this week saying I need a new engine. My car is a 2019 ecosport with 55k miles on it. They are working on an appraisal and so far it’s already 6k. Still waiting for the final estimate to replace my engine

Engine oil pump failed and didn't give any warning lights until the engine was knocking from the lack of oil. The motor only had 51,216 miles on it. I've changed the oil at regular intervals and never drive it low of oil. Ford wouldn’t do anything for me. So I had to pay $6300 out of pocket.
