I'm reporting a safety issue with BMW vehicles equipped with the B58TU engine, primarily 2019-2021 models. These vehicles have an oil pump with an internal plastic component that regulates oil pressure, and this part is fracturing in the field, causing sudden loss of oil pressure. The failure typically occurs during cold starts in low temperatures. When it fails, oil pressure becomes erratic or is lost entirely, often with little to no warning before engine damage or vehicle disablement. Warning signs, when present, include inability to measure oil level electronically, abnormal oil pressure, or sudden drivetrain malfunction warnings. These can rapidly progress to engine shutdown or severe damage from oil starvation. This creates a dangerous situation because the vehicle can become disabled without warning while driving or after startup. This is especially hazardous when cars become immobilized in traffic or during winter conditions when failures occur most frequently, leaving occupants exposed to freezing temperatures while awaiting assistance. Pump replacement requires extensive disassembly and commonly costs $6,000-$8,000, assuming no engine damage. A critical concern: owners cannot determine if their vehicle has the original plastic pump or the later metal revision. BMW's VIN-based parts lookup now shows updated components even when original plastic parts remain installed, and BMW has removed the original plastic part number from dealer networks entirely. Failures are reported across multiple production years, and the scope of affected vehicles remains unclear. The contact owns a 2021 BMW X3. The contact stated that while driving 65-70 MPH on the highway, the drivetrain malfunction warning light illuminated with a message to “See Dealer” was displayed. The local dealer was contacted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed, and it was determined that the starter and the battery needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V056000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was out of warranty and the repair was not covered. The failure mileage was 28,766.

Defect: While driving at highway and surface street speeds, the instrument panel goes completely black without warning, causing me to lose visibility of vehicle speed, fuel level, warning indicators, navigation, and driver assistance displays while in motion — a direct safety hazard. Frequency: This occurs spontaneously on multiple occasions with no specific trigger and no audible alert. Repair History: The vehicle has been presented to an authorized BMW dealership in Berkeley, CA twice for this defect. Both attempts failed. Cumulative days out of service: 31. A replacement headunit ordered from Germany was promised by February 20, 2026 and has not arrived as of February 22, 2026. Systemic Defect: At least one other NHTSA complaint documents the identical failure in a 2025 BMW X3 — and that owner experienced the same blackout in a BMW X3 loaner vehicle, strongly indicating this is a systemic defect across the 2025/2026 X3 redesign. The contact owned a 2026 BMW X3. The contact stated while reversing at an undisclosed speed out of the garage at the residence, the vehicle became difficult to maneuver. The contact stated that the vehicle skidded on the ice, and the rear end crashed into a tree. There was no warning light illuminated during the failure. There was no air bags deployed during the crash. A Police report was not filed. The vehicle was drivable and was taken to a Collision Center in Bloomington, Illinois, where it was inspected, and the vehicle was deemed a total loss by the Insurance Provider. The contact research and was made aware of an NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V857000 (STEERING). The contact stated that the VIN was not under recall when the crash occurred but had since received the recall notification. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 900.

The vehicle spontaneously exploded and caught fire while parked in a closed, underground parking facility of a commercial building. This created an immediate risk of: Mass casualties due to smoke inhalation and potential structural collapse of the parking ceiling. Fire spreading to dozens of adjacent vehicles.The explosion occurred without any prior warning, posing a lethal threat to anyone nearby. 3. The failure was officially confirmed and documented through a State Forensic Examination. The Ministry of Internal Affairs’ Forensic-Criminalistic Department conducted a comprehensive technical audit. They ruled out any external factors (arson/accelerants) and confirmed an internal electrical short circuit as the sole cause. 4. Yes. The vehicle was inspected and seized as evidence by the Criminal Police and the State Forensic-Criminalistic Department of Georgia. 5. There were no warning lights or messages displayed on the dashboard prior to parking the vehicle. Here is a summary of the issue I experienced in a form of answers your questions. I have uploaded a more detailed description of the issue in a pdf file. 1. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The power steering on my new 2026 BMW X3 iDrive30 failed (at 135 miles on the odometer) while making a righthand turn resulting in the steering wheel being extremely difficult to turn. My car was towed to BMW of Sterling (Virginia) where it was repaired by replacing the electrical steering box. While my car itself is available for inspection, you would need to contact BMW of Sterling to determine if the parts that were replaced are available for inspection. 2. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? With the steering wheel extremely difficult to turn, any precise, time-critical maneuvers to avoid collisions with other vehicles, pedestrians, etc. was significantly compromised. 3. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? BMW of Sterling personnel confirmed the issue when my car was dropped off for repair. Service diagnostics also confirmed the failure. 4. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? My car was inspected only by BMW of Sterling personnel. 5. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? In my estimation, no. I did not notice any audible or visual indications until shortly after the steering failure when I saw several warning messages displayed on my car’s LED “dashboard”. NHTSA COMPLAINT - 2026 BMW X3 WINDSHIELD DEFECT Our brand new 2026 BMW X3 has experienced two complete windshield failures within six weeks of purchase. Both windshields spontaneously cracked from the perimeter bonding edge with NO rock strikes or impacts: ∙First failure (Week 3): Crack from driver-side A-pillar edge ∙Second failure (Week 6): Crack from top horizontal edge near rearview mirror Critical Pattern: Both cracks originated from different points along the windshield-to-body bonding periphery, indicating a systemic defect in the entire bonding system, not isolated damage. Safety Risk: This violates FMVSS 212 windshield retention requirements. Risks include: windshield detachment during crashes, airbag deployment failure, sudden visibility loss while driving, and water intrusion causing electrical fires. Key Evidence: BMW has already recalled FOUR related 2026 models for identical windshield seal defects: ∙Campaign 25V556: X5/X7 (1,406 vehicles) - improperly sealed windshields ∙Campaign 25V671: X4/X6 - same defect The X3 shares the same platform, manufacturing facility, and production timeframe but was excluded from recalls. To Whom It May Concern, I am submitting this formal safety complaint regarding my 2021 BMW X3, which is currently subject to an active safety recall involving a potential engine starter defect that may result in a vehicle fire.BMW of North America has notified me that water may enter the engine starter, causing corrosion and overheating, which can lead to a fire even when the vehicle is parked and turned off. BMW has advised owners, including myself, to park the vehicle outside and away from structures due to this risk.Since receiving this recall notice, my vehicle has displayed a check engine light, and I have personally experienced a burning or fire-like smell coming from the engine compartment.These symptoms have caused serious concern for my safety and the safety of my child.I contacted BMW regarding this issue and was informed that there is currently no available remedy to repair the defect. Despite the known fire risk and the warning signs my vehicle is exhibiting, BMW has not provided a temporary repair, replacement vehicle, or other permanent solution.This vehicle is my only means of transportation. I am a single mother and rely on this vehicle daily to transport myself and my child to work, school, and essential activities. Being advised to continue driving a vehicle with a known fire hazard, while also being instructed not to park it in my garage, places an unreasonable and unsafe burden on my family.I am not refusing a reasonable solution. I am open to trading my vehicle into a comparable BMW model while maintaining the same existing car note or loan terms. My primary concern is having a safe and reliable vehicle for myself and my child, given the unresolved safety defect and the lack of an available repair.I am submitting this complaint so that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is aware that consumers are currently operating vehicles with a known fire risk and no available remedy. Vehicle: 2025 BMW X3 Complaint Description: I am reporting a serious safety defect involving sudden unintended acceleration, braking abnormalities, steering looseness, and electronic system failures. Within days of purchase, the vehicle began experiencing infotainment system freezing and electronic malfunctions. Over time, steering looseness and abnormal brake behavior developed. These issues were reported to authorized BMW service centers but were not corrected or properly documented. On May 17, 2025, while the vehicle was stationary and in park, it suddenly accelerated without driver input after a passenger exited the vehicle. I attempted to brake, but the vehicle continued forward and collided with a stone structure, causing injury. BMW later claimed driver error based on post-collision data but ignored extensive pre-collision defect evidence. The vehicle was returned from repairs and continues to exhibit malfunctions. I believe this vehicle presents a serious safety risk to drivers, passengers, and the public.

BMW was notified in writing of multiple safety-related incidents involving system reliability and unauthorized access behavior. These concerns escalated to an incident occurring while the vehicle was in motion, presenting immediate risk to occupants, including two minor children. Despite acknowledgment of these concerns, BMW has: Failed to open a repair order to document the safety defects; Conditioned inspection on continued operation of a vehicle reported as unsafe; Failed to provide a timely, safe alternative path for inspection (e.g., coordinated tow and uninterrupted transportation); Gone silent for extended periods after acknowledgment of safety risk. I have expressly stated that the vehicle is unsafe to operate and that continued delay creates ongoing risk. I have also stated my willingness to cooperate fully with inspection and documentation provided that such cooperation does not require placing occupants at risk. This supplemental notice is submitted to preserve the record that continued inaction following acknowledgment of a safety concern may constitute failure to mitigate known risk. This submission is a supplemental update to my existing NHTSA complaint regarding my BMW X3. On [XXX], at approximately [XXX], while the vehicle was traveling approximately 40 MPH with the doors locked, the rear passenger door opened while the vehicle was in motion. A [XXX] child was secured in a rear car seat at the time. A [XXX] child witnessed the event while I was dropping him off at school. No audible or visual warning alerts activated before or during the incident. This event follows prior electronic access and system reliability concerns reported in November and December 2025, including operation without key presence and unauthorized access behavior. I believe these events may be related and indicative of a broader electronic or body control system failure. Due to the seriousness of this incident involving minor occupants, I no longer consider the vehicle safe to operate. The vehicle is pending inspection and has not been driven further. After driving car a few minutes with the heated seats “on”, the driver’s seat became extremely hot. Driver burned finger upon checking the seat and a hole was burned through the seat upholstery. No warning lamps or messages appeared. We were concerned for further overheating or possible fire. Car has been at A & L Dealership, Monroeville, PA, since November 28, 2025. A & L Dealership notified us the vehicle had “short circuit in wiring”.

I am submitting a safety complaint regarding a recurring infotainment system failure involving the 2025/2026 BMW X3. While driving, the center display screen suddenly blacks out, which creates a serious safety hazard. This issue first occurred with my personal BMW X3. More concerning, the exact same failure occurred again while I was driving a BMW X3 loaner vehicle provided by the dealership. This indicates the problem is not isolated to a single vehicle but may be systemic. I was able to capture video evidence of the incident while driving, which clearly shows the screen going completely black: [XXX] When the screen blacks out, access to navigation, vehicle settings, driver assistance displays, and other critical information is lost while the vehicle is in motion. This creates a dangerous distraction and increases the risk of an accident. Despite previous service visits, the issue has not been resolved, and the occurrence in a second vehicle raises serious concerns about the reliability and safety of BMW’s infotainment system in the X3. And most importantly, this is the brand-new redesign BMW X3 2025 and 2026 model. Not any previous model, which raises more concerns. I believe this defect warrants investigation, as it directly impacts driver safety and may affect multiple vehicles. I am uncomfortable continuing to drive the vehicle under these conditions.
