- #11625047November 13, 2024FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: WARNINGS, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING
Since purchasing this vehicle new, I've had several occasions (not on just the most recent date noted in this case) where the car will issue a false Pre-collision Alert and apply the brakes for about 1 second while using the Adaptive Cruise Control. However, this happens while me and the drivers around me are driving "normally" and there are no vehicles in front of me nor attempting to merge into my lane. There does not seem to be a particular set of conditions that cause this false alert and they happen randomly, but it is startling when they happen since there is no observable reason for it. Fortunately, there has not been anyone tail-gating me when this happens because this could easily cause a rear-end collision if someone were following too close. I've notified my local dealer about this issue more than once, but they cannot find anything wrong.

My 2021 Toyota Corolla has 43k miles at this moment and the engine coolant bypass valve went out prematurely. There should be a recall on this part because a lot of people are having issues with this part on these cars at such low millage. Thanks

EPB Shift Interlock Function Activated message on the dashboard briefly before start-up. This has occurred even though the car hasn't had any issues before. The braking system is functional, except regardless of time and temperature, the message still displays. The car's battery is in good condition and no low power level is displayed.

My wife and I have been having great difficulty reading the center portion of the instrument panel because the illumination is too dim. We have visited the dealership and were instructed how to maximize the brightness, but it is still not sufficient. The small icons that appear at the top of the center section of the instrument panel cannot be viewed while we are driving, unless we place our head close to the screen. To do this our head must be at the level of the bottom of the front window. In that position we cannot see the highway sufficiently to be “safe.” We both have good vision. In the past, we have owned over thirty automobiles and have never had a problem seeing the instrument panel.I have discovered that occassionally the illumination of the center screen of my instrument panel is fine. The car’s computer apparently dim’s it without my consent. I drove 60 miles (about an hour) on a California freeway, and for the first 20 minutes I had good illumination. Then it suddenly got to its usual dim state. I have asked several people at my Toyora dealership, and they cannot help me. I, therefore, am requesting someone at your offices to look into this problem, and call me by phone to help me solve this important problem. The best way to viualize this problem would be to inspect my auto at my home.

- #11624145November 8, 2024ENGINE, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
To start, on [XXX], I was going through an intersection on a country road and my automatic emergency braking engaged for no reason. My car stopped despite no other vehicle or object being in my way or anywhere close to me. I found it really weird but did not think much about after the fact. I have also heard a rattling noise under my hood since [XXX] and have reported this to Toyota and tried to have it fixed multiple times (and showed them videos) but they were never able to duplicate the noise so it has not been remedied. On [XXX] I was traveling on a highway during rush hour and the traffic in front of me came to a sudden stop. I braked as hard as I could; my automatic emergency braking did not engage and I rear ended the car in front of me (minimal damage to that car). We both immediately pulled partway onto the narrow left berm (we had both been in the left lane to get onto another highway). My car then turned off by itself and gave me an engine warning (I believe low engine oil- I had just had it serviced 3 days prior). The other car owner and I exchanged information quickly and decided to drive away because we were blocking rush hour traffic and it was dangerous. However, my car would not start back up. I called 911 and they came to use their vehicle to push me to the right side of the highway onto an exit where I was no longer blocking traffic. During the wait, I felt like I was going to die with traffic honking and swerving to avoid me. When the police officer was moving my car, the parking brake engaged when I put the car in neutral and would not turn off, so the smell of burning rubber was strong since the tires would not roll. Once the tow truck driver arrived he was able to use jumper cables to disengage the parking brake but the car still would not start. There were no prior warning lights. The car not starting was confirmed by the dealer- they are holding off doing maintenance to have an engineer check out the car and figure out what happened. I recently purchased a 2021 Toyota Corolla SE. After a few days the "Engine Maintenance Required - See Dealer" notification appeared. See as it was purchased very recently, I assumed this was the oil maintenance light, and reset it. Later that day, it came back, and I reset it a different method under the assumption I did it wrong. The next day it was back, and that is when I realized it must be something else. So I started doing some research and found lots of other people have had this same issue: 2020-21 Corolla, greater than 30k miles, usually less than 60k, and while the Check Engine Light *DOES NOT TURN ON* the car is throwing an error code: P268115 - Engine Coolant Bypass Valve. Sure enough, I have the codes pulled and I have that code showing up. So I took it to the local Toyota Dealership. They stated that the issue was not a warrantable, so I would likely have to pay out of pocket. After a slight fuss, they agreed to fix it as a "one-time goodwill gesture, performed in the interest of customer satisfaction..." So in the end, they did fix it; I did still have to pay for a diagnostic of the issue which is frustrating, especially since I was dead on in my analysis of the issue. To answer the guideline questions: Engine Coolant Bypass Valve Leaking engine coolant could cause the engine to overheat, which can lead to fires, not exactly ideal. It can also cause electrical shorts, leading to more issues. Yes. Lancaster Toyota confirmed the issue. Yes, Lancaster Toyota confirmed that the part was faulty. They appeared shortly after buying the car. There were no error lights like I'd expect, but there was the constantly appearing "Engine Maintenance Required - See Dealer" message which the Owner's Manual states is simply the 5000 mile Oil Change warning. Hidden behind this message is the error code P268115.

On [XXX], around 7:45 PM, My husband and I were driving on [XXX] from Atlanta to visit family at John’s Creek. We were driving at a steady speed of approximately 70mph on the second lane from the left when all of a sudden, the vehicle displayed a 'malfunction' alert and began swerving uncontrollably. Despite our attempts to regain control, the car swerved right, striking another vehicle three lanes away. We had no control over the steering or bringing the car to a safe stop. After colliding with the other vehicle, it then returned to its original lane and came to a sudden stop with a message displayed stating 'Shifting to P'. During this incident, an SOS call was automatically placed to Toyota, and we were subsequently connected to 911 through them. Our vehicle got damaged due to this and so did the other vehicle that got hit. The vehicle not only endangered our lives but was also a potential harm to others on the road. On10/19/2024, the driver was driving down a road that was coming down from a slope and the road curves to the left. As the driver was braking to decrease the speed down to 30mph or below (she was going around 35mph from what she remembers) and turning the steering wheel left, all the curtain air bags deployed, the seatbelt locked and she was unable to turn the steering wheel. She couldn't see due to the airbags and the seatbelt locking her back so when she felt/heard scraping on the right she feared she was going to crash into trees so she yanked as hard as possible to the left and the car then stopped. She remembers that the screen flashed something like an SOS but then it faded. Bystanders helped her out of the car as she was still in the car (she was very shaken) and they tried to put the car in neutral as it was blocking the road to push it but they were unsuccessful as the wheels had locked. The police and a tow truck was called by a bystander. Other than a small scrape on the right fender of the bumper, there was no damage to the car. Nothing was in the road. The bystanders asked her if she had a stroke or some medical issue since there was no collision, no damage notable on the car and the car just stopped on the road. Inside all the curtain bags are deployed. The police officer and the tow truck driver thought that the sensor for rolling might have gotten triggered but there was nothing that they could see that would have triggered it. Toyota was contacted and the insurance company was unsure if this was considered a collision. Toyota wanted to investigate the car themselves and we signed a letter giving them permission to download data and information from the car. We were told they would be sending someone to physically look at the car.

My son reported driving home from school. He was stopped an intersection ready to make a turn. When he stepped on the gas pedal to go, the engine stopped and a message "Engine Stopped, Steering Power Low" message appeared in the dashboard. Engine light and steering light also came "on" the dash. This may occur while driving and put the driver at risk. His 2024 Toyota Corolla was brought in to the Wesley Chapel Toyota Dealership yesterday 10/29/2024. The technician did not find any error codes and found the battery and alternator to be in good working condition. Issue unresolved by the dealership.

Apparently my car's Engine Coolant Bypass Valve is broken and it's a common case with my car's model that's made after 2020. Seems like it there's a need a recall for such a thing since it's a defective part they knew about since my car was screaming at me for an engine maintenance. However, the check engine wasn't on. I went to Toyota at Elk Grove, CA and knew what the issue was pretty quick and charging me $700 to get it replaced. I feel like it's intentionally being handled poorly so they keep charging me 700 every few years to replace a $80 part. As well my story is very common with other customers of Toyota Cars made after 2020. I wanted to report this since that's potentially harmful to put out a car that could have engine problems easily. Especially it's a fairly newer car. Also, they have yet to replace the part for the known recall on this vehicle.

Since January 2024, my vehicle has been recalled. They said there would be a remedy by Q3. We called Toyota Dealership in Irving TX and they said next month. We feel blown off and unsafe considering this is an issue that's been almost a year. It's also Q4. Please help us get this rectified as soon as possible. I would truly appreciate your help.

Hi, This car has had a recall since 12/20/23. Toyota still has no fix for us. I have this car on the TURO rental platform, but they unlisted my car because of this recall. I want to file a complaint on Toyota for not offering me a fix and killing my business. Is they any way to put a hold on this until a fix comes out? Engine Maintenance Required message came on. Took the vehicle to the dealership and was told that it was the Cooling Bypass Valve. The service advisor said he knew what the problem was before even looking at the vehicle but still wanted to run a diagnostic and charge $800-$900 for the repair. I was told my vehicle was no longer under warranty.

This is an issue I have noticed with my car shortly after I bought it. The problem is that the car has a noticable delay in acceleration when accelerating from a complete stop. After doing some research online, I found that the cause was the car's CVT transmission, and that a delay in acceleration happens with other cars with CVT transmissions as well. This could be potentially dangerous especially when making right turns on a red light or when making unprotected lefts on a green, as the window of opportunity to go is sometimes short in those situations, and delaying for even a second could mean the difference between a collision or a safe turn (especially since there are some fast drivers that go much past the speed limit and will appear from behind a hill all of a sudden). What is especially problematic is that the car will rarely accelerate normally when I press the pedal, but I would say around 80-90% of the time, the car will have a delay about 1 second before it actually starts moving. To my knowledge, this problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center. I bought the car brand-new about half a year ago so it shouldn't have any problems. The vehicle has not been inspected by anyone, and there were no warning lights or any other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. I didn't really notice that this car had this problem when I first drove it home from the dealership because I was not used to so many other aspects of the car, but after I got more used to driving it, I realized that the delay in acceleration wasn't normal.
