Heard slapping noise. Took to auto repair shop AND to dealership. Both confirmed failed rod bearing and need for engine replacement. Vehicle 2017 Pilot Elite 4D AWD V6 with about 93,000 miles. Car was routinely serviced and in good shape except for failed rod bearing. Repair estimate $10,000. I am aware of recall for other years. I am seeing Pilot Forum discussion that this is problem for more than the years Honda is allowing recall. This is unconscionable. This is a KNOWN manufacturer defect and Honda should not be allowed to avoid liability just by limiting the recall years. The contact attempted to obtain the requested repair diagnosis already performed by one of Honda's dealerships and there has been no response to the inquiry.

The contact owns a 2017 Honda Pilot. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. In addition, the contact stated that the acceleration was delayed. The vehicle was taken to the independent mechanic where the vehicle was diagnosed with a fuel injection failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, however the failure could not be duplicated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The contact researched and discovered Technical Service Bulletin 20-029 which described a similar failure, however, the contact was informed that the contact's VIN was not associated with Technical Service Bulletin 20-029. The failure mileage was approximately 55,000.

The contact owns a 2019 Honda Pilot. The contact stated while driving from a complete stop and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle hesitated to respond, then slowly responded. The contact stated that on several occasions, the vehicle would only respond when depressing the accelerator pedal with added force. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring while driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer several times; however, the cause of the failure could not be determined. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where the fuel pump system was cleaned with an additive; however, the failure persisted. The contact later received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline), which she related to the failure; however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown. Parts distribution disconnect.

We received a recall notification in December 2023 for fuel the pump on this vehicle. Now we’re being told that a replacement may not be available until fall which means it could be a year since the notice until the repair. With the possibility of an instant failure (as the notice said was possible) how is this vehicle safe to drive at freeway speed in let’s say WV with the power brakes, steering, etc. out of commission? Suppose it breaks down in Elko, NV? There’s no dealer for 200 miles. These repairs need to be made immediately or Honda needs to buy the vehicle back. The issue is beyond a possible inconvenience it’s dangerous.

Started vehicle and proceeded to drive forward in my driveway when smoke started coming in the vehicle. Noticed after driving that the smoke was coming in the vehicle from under the glove box on the passenger side by the floor mat. Within approximately two minutes a flame ignited in which the dashboard caught on re. The whole inside on the vehicle was destroyed & totaled the whole vehicle. I have about 25 more pictures of the car (after the re and during) that I couldnt send via this webform. If you need them I would be happy to email them to you directly.

The Honda stop-start system in this vehicle has a flaw. On this day the engine shut down as normal at a light, but failed to start when the foot was removed from the brake. The engine sputtered and shut back off. This should be a problem if a restart could have been attempted but this failure was so severe that the car had to be put in park and shut off completely. Almost like a reboot of the computer. Once the car was shut off and then powered up again the car could be started and move under it's own power. Even thought I was quick to turn on hazard flashers, cars behind me became angry at the inconvenience, honking and swerving to get around me when the light was green. Honda needs to make a way to attempt to restart after an unsuccessful attempt by the auto start system. The engine has run fine since the event so no issues with the engine can be found. It had to be something minor that prevented the successful firing of the engine.

- #11579398March 25, 2024LANE DEPARTURE: BLIND SPOT DETECTION, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: WARNINGS, UNKNOWN OR OTHER
On 3/18/24 I started my car on a routine after school pickup trip but my notification system started blinking with different sensor problems. I took pictures of the display and tried to drive my car and saw at the time it did not affect drivability. I made an appointment with my dealer and brought it in 3/25/24. I started researching if there might be a pattern with other Honda Pilots and did find some discussion boards about 2020/2021 Honda Pilot that had a similar event—sensor problems displaying for no evident triggering event. I brought my car in for the appointment and the advisor said they would run a diagnostic as well as address 2 active recalls on my Pilot and take care of the maintenance. The diagnostic test showed that I have a faulty front multi purpose camera that must be replaced. Ny car has about $70K miles so it is outside the warranty period so I am having to pay for this repair myself. Note: the active recall that was repaired at this same visit was an issue with wiring in the rear camera. I asked the advisor if it was possible that the camera issues were related even though they were different cameras and he said at the moment there were no recalls for the multipurpose camera so he could not say. I am submitting this claim to document a possible safety concern that should be covered under a recall. Other incidents noted: when advisor asked if I had experienced any issues starting car, I did mention that last summer appx. Aug 2023 at a stop light my car went in idle mode (auto start/stop function) but when I took my foot off brake to go on green light the car did not restart. I had to get my key and push it into the ignition button to restart it. This has happened 2 since I’ve had the car. With all the recalls and these auto stop/start issues, I have experienced lower confidence & satisfaction in my Honda Pilot, but I am worried that safety may be an issue as well.

It is the fuel pump recall I am in need of replacement. I have went to Honda and tried to have them look at it and they gave me a complete run around. My car begins to jerk and when I go to speed up the car doesn’t like to go. Honda said it wasn’t the fuel pump but I have had it looked else where and it is the pump. I drive everyday with my kids in the car. I feel like this is causing me anxiety and my safety for me and my kids.

- #11578622March 21, 2024ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
The contact owns a 2016 Honda Pilot. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle a knocking noise was present coming from the engine compartment. The vehicle was taken to the local mechanic who discovered metal shavings in the engine oil and determined that the engine rod bearings had failed causing severe damage to the engine. The vehicle was not repaired. The mechanic informed us of a manufacturer's recall related to the failure. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure and informed that the VIN was not included in the NHTSA Campaign Number: [XXX] (Engine, Engine Cooling). The contact indicated that the vehicle had experienced that same failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 95,000. The contact owns a 2019 Honda Pilot. The contact stated after starting the vehicle, there was a chirping noise coming from the timing belt. No warning lights was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer several times. The first time, the dealer stated it was normal, the second time, the dealer replaced the serpentine belt, the last time, the dealer acknowledged the noise but stated they did not have a solution to fix the issue. The contact stated the vehicle was taken to another dealer who stated it was a known issue called the timing belt chirp. They also stated when replacing the timing belt, they install a part to prevent the noise as well as prevent wear and tear. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact referenced Hondas Service Bulletin 16-054, which applied to the year make and model of the contact's vehicle. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, a case was opened and then closed. The approximate failure mileage was 106,000.
