- #11587876May 9, 2024UNKNOWN OR OTHER, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING
The vehicle emergency braking kicks in for no reason, there were no other cars in sight and I was driving, in my lane when the vehicle flashed BRAKE and slammed on brakes for me. That is going to cause me to get into an accident when I am cruising and in my lane, no other vehicles around and it slams on brakes, very startling. Also, if it is raining to hard all safety features stop functioning and it says I have to Clean the emblem, the emblem is clean it is just raining to hard and the “safety” features can’t function

On [XXX] 2023 our 2016 Honda Pilot experienced a total engine failure while we were driving on [XXX] in Maryland just south of the Delaware border. The only warning was a clicking noise that lasted for a few minutes and then an engine warning light. We had just had the car serviced by Sheehy Honda in Alexandria, VA on November [XXX] (which is the only place we have it serviced) and the vehicle only had 65,000 miles on it. We were stranded beside the highway and had to get the vehicle towed to the nearest Honda station (Martin) in Delaware where they said that pieces of metal had broken off inside the motor requiring total engine replacement. Martin showed us photos and video of the metal pieces. After getting the engine replaced by Martin Honda, I did some online research and found Service Bulletin 23-097 dated November 9, 2023 posted on the NHSTA website regarding malfunctions of Honda Pilot 2016 models with the connecting rod bearing possibly leading to engine failure. When I complained to Honda three times about this engine failure (cases [XXX], [XXX] and [XXX]), I was told that my VIN was not covered. I find this problematic. This failure occurs in some 2016 Pilots, but not in mine according to Honda. Something major certainly occurred causing total engine failure in our Pilot. I also complained to the Better Business Bureau, but Honda did not respond to them. The fact that the engine failed while driving on the highway put my wife and me at risk as well as others driving around us at the time. The engine failure was confirmed by Martin Honda and they were in correspondence with Sheehy Honda, our normal service center. I have the service documents from both Martin and Sheehy as well a photos of the damage from Martin. American Honda Corporation stated that this failure is not their responsibility, but I find this unacceptable from a major corporation to pass on an obvious defect in their product to the consumer. I am trying to get my open recall fixed, but the dealer won’t fix it unless there is a problem and even charged me for a diagnostic test to see if there is a problem with the recall. This was at Apple Tree Honda in Asheville, NC

The vehicle was driven from my house with a plan to reach destination about 30 miles away. 1st half was on back roads, the 2nd half was on highway. Once the vehicle reached the highway, the pilot started to overrev, loud bang, a bit of smoke from hood. Vehicle was pulled over on closest shoulder which was the left shoulder on highway. I had my 2 twin 4 year olds in the car and had to call someone to come get us safely off the highway with cars passing at high rates of speed while shuffling car seats and children off the highway. I then had it towed to a honda service center. They tried to crank the engine over and couldn't and stated it was seized. Since I was out of warranty by time and mileage (6.5 years and 61K miles), they wanted to charge me $1K for diagnostics and provided the quote for a used and new engine. Since they didn't diagnose first, I had it towed to another mechanic and he took the bottom splash guards off and there was oil all over and a hole in the lower engine block, which appeared to be caused by a broken rod.

My vehicle has been loosing power when accelerating. This has been an ongoing issue for approximately six months or so. I' have taken it to two different mechanic shops locally and both have stated that some of the fuel injectors are not working properly and 5 cylinders are misfiring. That is the reason the vehicle is loosing power. But they don't understand why the engine light or any other light are not coming up on the cluster board. Vechicle continues to jerk and shudder everytime we stop and only happens on 2 and 3 gear to the point we have to stay two cars back everytime it is in use to avoid rear ending any other vehicles. Feels like it looses power to the point of turning off then begans to pull. The RPM needle jumps up and down when the shuddering begins. It is a great concern such that i feel it poses a risk to my family and other drivers. I have been to the dealership but they will not do anything about it unless the engine light is on which at this point it has not turned on making impossible to diagnose the issue through the dealership. I did provide the dealership with documentation from other shops but they wouldn't accept them as they would have to run diagnostic themselves. I did check for recalls and other complaints. A recall was issued for the fuel injectors but as stated dealership will not do anything unless the engine light turns on. They wouldn't even test drive it to confirm the issue. I feel that if this issue isn't addressed my family or others drivers will end up getting hurt. There has been hundreds of people who have complained of the same issue on the internet forums and many have filed complaints with the NHTSA. This complaint is for record purposes in the event of injury due to engine failure on my vehicle.

The back Right passenger seat belt indicator is continuously beeping even when engaged . This appears to be a loose wiring in below the buckle as you can move the section around to temporarily stop it.

This issue occurred [XXX]. The fuel door would not open when we were at the gas station to fill up. We opened the side panel inside the back of the vehicle and tried to open using the emergency lever but that did not work either. Had to take to our local Honda dealer, Swickard of Thousand Oaks in Thousand Oaks, California. Our vehicle had only 59,088 miles when this stopped working. On the service order from our dealer In the description of the concern it states that after inspecting the fuel door actuator, fuel door cable and the fuel door grommet it was found that the cable was kinked, causing the plastic grommet to break apart. From the description from the dealer it sounds like the cable was installed incorrectly when the vehicle was made causing the failure. We were fortunate that we were not traveling and not been near a dealer or mechanic when this issue occurred. Three of the six fuel injectors on a 2019 Honda Pilot failed, with Diagnostic Trouble Codes P0430, P0300, P0304, P0306, and P219A, resulting in the vehicle requiring transportation via tow truck to an independent service center. Research into the history of 2019 Honda Pilots indicates that 2019 model-year vehicles within a certain VIN number range, along with all 2018-2019 Honda Odysseys, 2016-2018 Honda Pilots, and 2017-2019 Honda Ridgelines, had their warranties extended for fuel injectors to 10 years from original date of purchase or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. See Honda Service Bulletin 20-100. The issue is that some 2019 Honda Pilots are failing with these DTC codes, but are not covered by the warranty extension. The problem was diagnosed by an independent service center and we were directed to Honda for further diagnostic and possible warranty service. A technician at the service center stated that he had never seen a customer have to pay for fuel injector replacement on a Honda Pilot from 2016-2019 model years that developed this problem. Regardless, Honda insists that this vehicle is not covered by the warranty extension and required us to pay for the repair ourselves. My family and I were temporarily without a usable vehicle, because our other vehicle was undergoing scheduled maintenance at the time of the failure. Prior to the failure, all of the warning lamps on the vehicle would occasionally illuminate at vehicle start up, but the vehicle operated normally, and the warning lamps stopped illuminating after a few start ups. The warning lamps that would simultaneously illuminate were all of the ADAS systems available on this vehicle, as well as things like Hill Start Assist, Traction Control, Emissions, and the Anti-Lock Braking System. So many errors were simultaneously reported on the dashboard that our service center believed that the problem might be an intermittent Engine Control Computer problem in addition to the issue listed above.

The contact owns a 2013 Honda Pilot. The contact stated while driving 10 MPH, the check engine warning light, the traction control warning light, and an unknown warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that oil was seeping through the piston rings and was leaking onto the spark plugs. Additionally, the dealer diagnosed that cylinder #1 was misfiring. The dealer determined that the piston rings needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 13V382000 (Engine) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened; however, no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 86,680.

I purchased this vehicle a little less than two months ago… this vehicle is babied and I make sure to stay on top of everything possible as it’s a primary transportation to bring my toddler to his many appointments. While operating on the highway, everything was smooth sailing as expected, until I heard a noise. I glanced in the rear view mirror to see a part flying off of the car and colliding with the vehicle behind me. I couldn’t locate where the item came from. Today, I went to pick my son up from preschool and noticed the entire piece on the roof was hanging outward, right off and over the side of the vehicle. Had I not noticed, it could’ve caused further danger to others. I hopped up to look at my roof to realize the rear trim is the piece that flew off, and the following straight part is what was now dangling over the side. On top of everything else, on the same side, the trim along the side my of windshield is upraised and I am absolutely torn. How dangerously this could’ve ended had I not noticed. I’ve seen other pilot-owners discuss how their trim pieces have caused trouble and even further dented some trunks. This needs to be brought to attention, I didn’t spend $$,$$$ on a vehicle that is not safe.

My vehicle activates CMBS randomly. There doesn't even have to be cars around me and it'll just lock me up in the middle of the road. I have almost been rear-ended several times now. The dealers won't do anything about it.

My rearview camera guidelines are a mile off. Honda allegedly can't do anything to fix this. This could cause an unnecessary accident or cause a person to hit a pedestrian. Especially when it's as bad as this vehicle is. I'm talking 1.5 feet that's it's wrong.

honda pilot EXL 2020 with 39,000 miles- purchased new in may 2020. We just had our pilot oil change and multi-point inspection along with safety recall most faker replaced. With less than 40K miles we are getting told the Front control Arm needs to be replaced. The bushing on the right front lower control arm is torn-cracking, CAUSING our tires to be worn and ALSO needing to REPLACE ALL FOUR of them! I'm not sure how a four year old car, just out of 3 year warranty by a year, is needing all this excessive amount of work. Just this last year EVERYTHING with the suspension and tires were completely normal and healthy! Within that year only putting 10k miles on it, never been off roading or drive crazy- we both have a great driving record. So, all of this is absolutely sudden and worried for our safety. The car has NEVER notified us of low tire pressure at anytime, ever. Having the Honda service center telling us the tires have "adnormal wear pattern of tires" (all of which is, inner wear). Not allowing us to get the normal tire rotation due to that and the tread depth measure was unevenly worn. Just a reminder, not one of the sensors have NEVER alerted us- other than due for oil change. We went in thinking oil change and most safety recall repair would be it. Then being told 4 tires $1,000 and front control arm replacement $561 (not including service charge) is NEEDED! Bridgestone tires P245/60/R18, is the brand we currently have and need to replace immediately. I have all receipts from previous oil changes (Honda dealership in Charleston sc- where we bought the car from) and multi-point inspections, seeing as this is sudden and very dangerous to not only us but to the cars around. Exact wording from our Honda service report- Not fixing this issue front control arm will be unable to stabilize the suspensions fore and aft movements. Not including the tires blowing out while driving.

I am experiencing a delay in acceleration. This can occur when I am completely stopped and press the gas, there is a delay (3-5 seconds) and then the car jerks forward and accelerates quickly. Or, when I've slowed down to almost a stop, begin a turn, step on the gas and it won't accelerate for a couple of seconds, almost causing an accident on several occasions. This occurs about once every 10-15 times I drive the vehicle. It's unpredictable.

My 2019 Honda Pilot alignment pulls badly to the right while driving on any type of road surface. I have had the vehicle aligned numerous times and the car still pulls to the right. I have heard from other people friends of mine that own Pilots that they have this issue as well. Honda needs to look into this as it is a safety problem out on the road. The problem has been confirmed by my tire dealer and my mechanic the problem continues. No warning lights have ever appeared.

This has now happened twice, resulting in my infant getting locked in the car. I unlocked the car open the driver side second door where my car seat is. I buckle in my infant put in my bag and then go to get in the driver side door and the car has locked itself with my key in my bag that I put inside the car with my baby. Either the car should not lock with the key inside of it or there should not be a timed lock system once the car has been opened.
