On 9/2/25, I gave my car to my local dealership to complete routine maintenance and to remedy a safety recall that had been initiated a few months prior. It was supposed to take one day to complete, but I was told that they were having trouble with a certain scan tool and would need technical assistance on their end before they could complete the recall. In short, it is now more than 3 months later (12/5) and I STILL do not have my car back. To the best of my knowledge, this is the problem: there is a scan tool that is necessary to complete the recall, and that this tool is malfunctioning. What the dealership keeps telling me is that they “continue to send tickets to their IT department, but don’t hear anything back.” A couple of times, they have heard back and have tried different updates or workarounds, to no avail. On multiple occasions, my service advisor has said that they “send tickets to IT daily in order to bother them enough actually do something.” I finally called VW customer care after my car had been with the dealership for 2 months, and the case was escalated to an RCM. She has tried following up with the dealership, as well as reaching out to the QTRL and QTM to see if there was any way to try to suss out the issue. To my knowledge, both of those have been fruitless. In fact, when the QTM visited the dealership to look at my car on November 26, all were hopeful there would be some movement. My RCM told me that the QTM was looking for updates to my case that “just weren’t there.” And that “the QTM on multiple occasions had looked for updates, but none were available.” To top things off, I spoke with my RCM on 12/2, and she said that my ticket had been closed due to “no updates in 5 days.” Infuriated, she reached back out that day to reopen the ticket. I was told today, 12/5, that the ticket STILL hasn’t been reopened. There is more, but I’m out of space. This many miscommunications and complete inaction is absolutely inexcusable at this point.

My screen frozed while I was driving to the point that I was not able to know how fast I was driving. My backup camera also did not displayed on the screen. I sent videos to [XXX]. The tire pressure stated that tire has a normal pressure but I had a flat tire. Tire pressure sensors are not reading the tire pressure. My Volkswagen ID.4 experienced a sudden crack in the windshield followed by smoke and fire near the dashboard/A-pillar area. The manufacturer denied responsibility and claimed the windshield crack caused the fire, but glass cannot ignite or cause an electrical fire. This is a serious safety hazard because the fire originated where electrical components and sensors are located. The incident occurred without any collision or external impact. The vehicle is still under lease, and Volkswagen refuses to investigate further. I am reporting this in case this defect affects more vehicles and poses a risk to other owners.

23 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro S AWD (82 kWh LG battery, <25k miles). Vehicle has permanently lost ~25% of usable battery capacity in less than 2 years. At 80% state-of-charge the Guess-O-Meter consistently shows only 200–205 miles (full-range estimate 250–255 miles instead of EPA 275 / real-world 280–300 miles in similar conditions). Multiple dealer-recommended BMS recalibrations (discharge below 10%, sit overnight, slow-charge to 100%) have failed to restore range. Persistent charging faults: B17E0F0 (charge connector lock), P1BF100 (no AC voltage detected), P1CAF00 (zero current time exceeded). Dealer has repeatedly claimed the condition is normal and refused full HV battery capacity diagnostic. Defect has been reproduced on multiple occasions and documented with screenshots and DTCs. This creates a safety risk due to severely inaccurate range prediction and potential for stranding. Request NHTSA investigate premature high-voltage battery degradation and charging system defects in 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 models equipped with LG batteries.

Drivers side Door handle will often not open after Recalled handle was installed. Requires a great deal of force many times. Was told twice by dealer that we had to "relearn" how to open the door. This is a safety hazard if a firefighter or police officer tries to open door during an emergency

The component that keeps failing is the instrument panel and display panel completely blackout when driving. The instrument panels come back on shortly after blacking out. It also shows a message sometimes in red and sometimes in yellow that there's an electrical malfunction. That message goes away shortly as well. This has happened numerous times over the 3 years I've owned the car. Each time it happens its a total distraction and could result in a risk of a crash. I've taken it in for service multiple times and the dealer reports no findings because they can't replicate it. The last time I took it in they kept the car 2 months and when it was returned to me within the the first 2.5 hours it blacked out again. I've been in contact with VW Corporate and asked if this was related to NHTSA campaign number 24V34400 and they said my VIN is not affected by this recall. VW corporate says I have to pay $200 to the dealer if I want them to try and diagnose it again. I told them that's ridiculous, it should be included in recall number 24V34400. This is defefenitly a safety issue and not an isolated one just to my car.

This event occurred on the night of Saturday, October 25. The entire software system crashed while driving on the highway in downtown chicago. This blacked out both the HMI screens (the driver "cockpit" and the media / vehicle management screen). This rendered the speedometer, battery charge indicator, cruise control indicator, media center, and advanced sensors unusable. I still able to accel/decel, use turn signals, and steer the car as normal but I could not tell how fast I was going nor how much remaining charge there was. After 1-2 minutes, the system fully rebooted and worked fine the rest of the trip. This was the first blackout we'd experienced--and it was the first time the cockpit (speedometer and such) was affected. However, the media center HMI regularly locks up and glitches: loading menus not linked to the certain buttons, lockups when multiple devices are connected, inability to reach VW servers,...) Software is on the most recent version available for my vehicle trim, though versions with many issues fixed have since been released. (We are stuck on ID software version 3.5 despite the most recent version being around 3.8.)

The vehicle displays including back up cameras and speed display failed to start with the car. I was able to move the car under power and believe I could have operated the vehicle at speed. I decided that it was unsafe to operate a vehicle without speed information and left the vehicle for approximately 10 hours. When I returned it was functioning again.

My 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 frequently disconnects from the network while driving. When this happens, multiple vehicle systems stop working as intended. The built-in GPS begins to drift or shows incorrect vehicle position, making navigation unreliable and unsafe. Other connected features (such as driver attention and traffic signs alerts) also fail or freeze. This issue occurs repeatedly, often without warning, and does not resolve itself even if the vehicle is restarted. I am concerned this is a software or hardware defect that could affect driver safety. I have contacted VW but they have not offered a solution.

The last two days I have been receiving a child lock error on my ID.4. Looking online, it seems like this is a common issue. When that issue occurs, it disables all window and lock functions in the car. Needless to say, I cannot engage the child lock, lock my car, nor roll down my windows. If I were in an accident, I cannot get out by rolling the windows down. Now, going back to researching online, I’m finding it comes down to a failed board or a failed software update. Either way, this is a huge safety issue/concern.

While driving, infotainment locked and rebooted multiple times, until eventually the whole car rebooted while driving. Lost all visibility of speedometer and everything on heads up display. for 1-2 minutes. Brought to service center yesterday 11/10/25 (1st available appointment) and they collected logs to send to Volkswagen.

While driving, the infotainment and central control display on our 2025 Volkswagen ID.4 repeatedly crash without warning. During these incidents, the navigation, HVAC controls, audio, CarPlay, vehicle warnings, and backup camera all become inoperable while the vehicle is in motion, including at highway speeds. Volkswagen has confirmed that this is a known, widespread software defect affecting multiple ID.4 vehicles and that no repair or software update is currently available. The vehicle has been at the dealership since November 3, 2025, awaiting a fix. These failures create a serious safety hazard by eliminating access to vehicle controls and safety-critical information. Volkswagen has refused to provide a fix or timeline for correction. Case No. 07127932 – Volkswagen Customer CARE. VIN [XXX] . Subject: Serious Safety and Electrical Problems – Request for Buyback or Replacement Dear [Manufacturer Name or Dealer Name], I leased my vehicle in January 2025, and since the very beginning I have experienced multiple serious problems. Right after taking the car from the dealership, it had an electrical failure — it completely shut down and had to be towed by a tow truck. After that incident, the vehicle has constantly shown computer warning messages such as “switch control deactivated,” “key not recognized,” “rear motor malfunction,” and other system errors. I have taken the vehicle to the dealership several times, and they always said it was due to a recall, but they never gave me a permanent solution. They kept telling me the vehicle was safe to drive. However, on Saturday, November 8, 2025, while I was driving with my family, the vehicle suddenly stopped, started jerking violently, showed a “battery overheating” error, and then accelerated by itself. I immediately called the dealership and took the car there. It is currently in their possession. This vehicle is extremely dangerous for me and my family. I am requesting that the manufacturer or dealer take full responsibility for this issue and proceed with a buyback or replacement under the Lemon Law and warranty protection.

Subject: Request for Investigation and Recall – Door Handle Failure on Volkswagen Vehicle Dear National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, I am writing to formally request an investigation and potential recall concerning a serious safety issue with my 2022 ID.4 AWD Pro S Volkswagen vehicle. The problem involves the door handles failing to open from either the inside or outside of the vehicle. I can provide video evidence showing that, while the vehicle is fully unlocked, with no child safety mechanisms engaged and my foot on the brake at a complete stop, the doors cannot be opened from either the front or rear seats. This issue occurs repeatedly—approximately four to five times per week—and has become more frequent since the “919” recall was performed on the vehicle. Despite this, the dealership has stated that the issue is a “non-issue,” claiming that other vehicles of the same model exhibit similar behavior. The inability to open a vehicle door in normal operating conditions is a serious safety concern that could endanger occupants in an emergency situation. Volkswagen’s response minimizes a clear risk to consumer safety. If the software controlling door operation cannot be relied upon to perform such a critical function, it should be removed or replaced with a mechanical mechanism that guarantees the ability to open the door at all times. I respectfully request that the NHTSA investigate this matter and determine whether a recall or corrective action is warranted. Thank you for your attention to this important safety concern. Please let me know if additional documentation or video evidence would be helpful to your investigation. On [XXX], my 2022 Volkswagen I.D. 4 burst into flames and exploded while it was parked in my apartment complex parking structure ([XXX] ). My car was completely engulfed in flames, nearby cars as well as the parking structure experienced heat damage. My life and others were put in danger because even though my car was electric, it was parked in a resident garage near other cars who are gas operated, which could have caused an even more catastrophic damage if the fire would've spread more. Dallas Fire Department was present, and a fire report was conducted (Incident number #[XXX]). As of today, the vehicle has only been inspected by the Dallas Fire department, as well as a virtual video meeting with my insurance agent from Allstate. Before the incident the car charged normally, was operating normally and there was no indication or warning signs to indicate that there were any issues that would have caused this. I have open recalls on my vehicle, and Volkswagen is refusing to fix them. This includes the door handles and the battery. The battery recall has been open for a while, and NO dealership is fixing it for me. Additionally, the local dealership refused service and tried charging me to fix the recall, which is supposed to be free. The "date this incident occured" below is today, because they are completely refusing service now.

Continuously receiving error message to have front sensors cleaned. Vehicle brought into dealership several times, for weeks at a time. On last visit sensors replaced, and I was told that “ The front sensors have a level of damage caused by sand, salt and other road debris. This has resulted in some scratches which are triggering the sensors and giving you the warnings that you are referring to.” Given this, the front sensor issues are a manufacturing flaw. I asked this if the dealer and, given the stated cause of sand, salt and road debris the likely frequency. With no answer.
