- #11770986October 13, 2026SUSPENSION
Both rear coil springs rusted completely through and failed at approximately 57,876 miles on this 2021 Honda Odyssey. This is a premature failure of a primary suspension safety component. A broken coil spring can cause sudden loss of vehicle support and handling instability, and a fractured spring can puncture a tire or damage surrounding brake and suspension components, creating a crash risk. No crash, fire, injury, or death occurred. The vehicle was repaired at GLF Performance LLC in [XXX] (invoice #XXX, $1,238.04 paid in full) using genuine Honda replacement rear coil springs (part 52441THRA11). The failed springs were retained and are available for inspection. This does not appear to be an isolated failure: identical rear coil spring failures on 2021 Honda Odyssey vehicles at similar mileage have been documented in other NHTSA complaints, suggesting a potential safety defect in this component. there is a very common issue with Hondas that the front camera behind the rear view mirror shuts down which causes many safety systems to shut down and nit work this happened to my car it is very unsafe as i am now missing five very important safety features and i am going to have to pay thousands to repair it. This problem has been confirmed by my mechanic as he inspected it. This happened randomly out of nowhere with no signs of this coming. The five components that do not work because of this camera failure are lane assist, auto high beam, lane departure, adaptive cruise control, and collision warning. This puts me and others at danger.

I purchased a used 2024 Honda Odyssey in September 2026 with approximately 12,000 miles. The vehicle intermittently experiences delayed starting and extended cranking when attempting to start the engine. CarMax was aware of the starting concern at the time of purchase. After purchase, CarMax replaced the battery, but the problem persisted. The vehicle was subsequently kept for approximately eight days for further diagnosis, and I was informed that technicians could not reproduce or identify the issue. I am concerned that the intermittent starting problem could worsen and potentially leave my family stranded. I am requesting that NHTSA review this complaint for a possible vehicle safety defect.

Vehicle auto start/stop was turned on. Vehicle stopped at a red light, vehicle engine shut off. Upon releasing the brake pedal, vehicle engine failed to start, a series of warnings and messages flashed on the dashboard, then vehicle transmission slammed into Park, from Drive. Driver proceeded to turn the vehicle off entirely, and was able to successfully restart the vehicle and drive away. Dashcam video, which captured audio and video through windshield but not dashboard, available upon request (file size too large to submit via this form).

The vehicle's Auto Idle Stop system shuts off the engine when stopped at a red light, and the engine intermittently fails to restart when the brake pedal is released. This has happened sporadically, including twice on October 11, 2026. Each time, the vehicle was left immobilized in an active traffic lane and would not move; I had to fully turn the vehicle off and restart it to drive again. This matches the defect under NHTSA engineering analysis EA25-004.

On October 12, 2026, I contacted Gerald Honda of Countryside, IL, to schedule a repair for the rearview camera safety recall. I was informed that due to limited parts and availability, the earliest appointment they could offer was January 5, 2027. I ultimately had to push the appointment to January 7, 2027. This timeframe far exceeds the 60-day remedy window from the date of initial contact established in the safety recall notice, violating the terms provided for addressing this defect.

The Auto Idle Stop feature malfunctions when coming to a full stop with the brake pedal depressed. The car stopped and then the engine shut down. It was difficult to restart the engine. The concern is that I cannot move the vehicle until I am able to restart the engine which puts me in an unsafe situation, especially at intersections or in traffic. The message on the dash said to depress the brake and depress the start on/off button, which I did several times before the engine actually restarted.

My 2024 Honda Odyssey repeatedly failed to restart after the automatic idle stop system engaged at traffic lights. On numerous occasions, the engine shut off normally but would not restart when I attempted to resume driving. I had to shift into Park and manually restart the engine before continuing. This happened regularly and created a safety concern because I could become stranded in traffic with my children in the vehicle. I eventually began manually disabling the automatic idle stop feature every time I drove because I was afraid the vehicle would fail to restart. I reported the issue verbally to a Honda dealership employee during a previous service visit and was advised to disable the automatic idle stop feature rather than continue using it. In October 2026, at approximately 21,000 miles, the vehicle displayed a low battery warning. Several days later, it completely failed to start after stopping at a gas station. Three separate jump-start attempts were unsuccessful. The dashboard lights and audio system worked, but the power windows stopped functioning. An authorized Honda dealership diagnosed a completely failed starter. The service advisor stated that the starter failure had also drained the battery. Both components were replaced under the factory warranty. The dealership stated that these repairs should resolve the previous idle stop failures, but the underlying cause of the premature starter failure has not been explained, and I do not yet know whether the problem is fully resolved. I am concerned about the repeated failures to restart in traffic and the complete starter failure at only 21,000 miles. I would like this investigated as a potential vehicle safety defect. I do not know whether the dealership retained the failed components for inspection.

I would like to report two incidents involving my 2025 Honda Odyssey Touring that may be relevant to NHTSA Engineering Analysis EA25004, which is investigating failures of the Auto Idle Stop system to restart the engine. The investigation includes 2018-2025 Honda Odyssey vehicles and concerns allegations that the engine fails to restart after an Auto Idle Stop event. On September 27, 2026, and again on October 12, 2026, my vehicle failed to restart after the Auto Idle Stop system shut off the engine while I was stopped at a red traffic light. When I attempted to proceed by releasing the brake and pressing the accelerator, the engine did not restart as expected. In both incidents, the vehicle automatically shifted into Park and displayed a message instructing me to restart the engine manually. This left me unable to proceed in an active traffic lane and created a potential safety hazard due to surrounding traffic. Both events occurred unexpectedly and without prior warning. The condition is consistent with reports of Auto Idle Stop no-restart failures that are the subject of EA25004. I respectfully request that this information be included in the ongoing investigation. Vehicle: 2025 Honda Odyssey Touring Incident Dates: September 27, 2026 and October 12, 2026 Failure Mode: Engine failed to restart following Auto Idle Stop activation; vehicle shifted to Park and required manual restart. Safety Impact: Vehicle became immobilized in an active traffic lane.

The Honda Odyssey’s Auto Idle Stop/Restart system has repeatedly malfunctioned. When the vehicle comes to a stop and the automatic idle-stop feature engages, the engine fails to restart as intended. This has occurred on multiple occasions, indicating a recurring problem rather than an isolated incident. The exact defective component has not been determined. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. This malfunction creates a serious safety hazard because the vehicle unexpectedly becomes immobilized in active traffic. When the engine fails to restart, I cannot immediately accelerate or move the vehicle as expected. This creates a risk of rear-end collisions, particularly at busy intersections, stoplights, and other situations where surrounding drivers reasonably expect traffic to move. The unpredictable nature of the failure makes it especially concerning because there is no way to anticipate when the vehicle will fail to restart. The fact that this has happened repeatedly increases my concern for the safety of my passengers, other motorists, and myself. No engine lights when this has occurred. I have to manually restart and it usually lags and cars behind me get mad and then try to zip around me. This makes me feel extremely unsafe- especially since buying this vehicle brand new.

The auto idle stop is causing the van to not start up after stopping at red light or stop sign and it causes the van to completely go dead in middle of the road. You have to turn the van completely off, while people behind you are honking their horns at you, and then crank the van back up in order to get it to go again. All dash lights are on but the engine dies and will not start without having to shut the van off. This is very dangerous and frustrating for any vehicle to do this, but especially a 2025!!!! This happened today 10/12/2026 but has happened several times already with my family.

Vehicle is equipped with automatic engine idle-stop (auto stop/start). On multiple occasions, when the system shuts the engine off at a stoplight or in stopped traffic, the engine fails to restart automatically when the brake pedal is released. The vehicle is left immobilized in an active traffic lane. Restarting requires shifting to park and pressing the ignition button, and even then the restart is delayed, leaving the vehicle stranded in the intersection with cross traffic approaching. This has happened repeatedly and creates a serious safety risk: a vehicle that cannot move out of an intersection can be struck by cross traffic, and occupants, including children, are exposed. No crash, fire, or injury has occurred. There were no warning lamps or messages before the failures. The component is available for inspection upon request. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by a dealer or the manufacturer for this issue. NHTSA is already investigating this exact failure mode in this vehicle population (engineering analysis EA25004, failure to restart after auto idle-stop).

The vehicle experiences frequent and unpredictable loss of acceleration when starting from a stop. The issue is intermittent and difficult to reproduce under specific conditions. At times, when the accelerator is pressed, the vehicle fails to respond or moves only slightly. Even when additional pressure is applied to the accelerator, there may be little to no response, followed by a sudden and forceful surge forward, as if the accelerator had been fully depressed. I understand that fuel-pump recalls have been issued for certain vehicles of this make, model, and year; however, my vehicle's VIN is not currently included. Based on the symptoms and the severity of the issue, I believe my vehicle warrants further investigation to determine whether it should be included in the recall. This problem first began in 2020, following my purchase of the vehicle in 2019, and has repeatedly created dangerous driving situations. When attempting to cross oncoming traffic from a stopped position, the vehicle's failure to accelerate presents a serious risk of a broadside collision. On multiple occasions, my wife has been left stranded in the middle of an intersection because the vehicle failed to respond to the accelerator. Given the persistent nature of this issue and the significant safety risk it presents to the driver, passengers, and other motorists, I am requesting a thorough investigation into the cause of this malfunction and a review of whether my vehicle should be covered under the applicable fuel-pump recall or receive other appropriate corrective action.

The 2025 Odyssey Elite van randomly will completely stop at stop signs and traffic lights. This happens when the Automatic Idle Stop system is activated. The van will not restart once the brake is released. Instead, we have to go through various start/stop cycles to finally restart the van. This issue has been reported by countless owners and it is time for Honda to do a recall.

Vehicle: 2025 Honda Odyssey Component: Electrical System / Engine / Powertrain (Auto Idle-Stop System) Description of Incident: While driving my 2025 Honda Odyssey, the vehicle experienced a dangerous failure of the Auto Idle-Stop feature. Upon coming to a complete stop at a traffic intersection, the system engaged normally and shut off the engine to conserve fuel. However, when traffic moved and I released the brake pedal to accelerate, the vehicle failed to restart. The engine stalled completely, the vehicle remained entirely immobilized in the middle of active traffic, and the engine could not be restarted automatically by the vehicle's computer systems. To get the vehicle moving again, I had to manually shift the transmission into Park (P) and repeatedly cycle the ignition via the Engine Start/Stop button. This delay left my family and me dangerously exposed to oncoming traffic and vulnerable to a rear-end collision. Diagnostic and Repair History: The vehicle is well within its 3-year factory warranty period. I took the vehicle to an authorized Honda dealership to address this specific defect. The dealership technicians diagnosed a voltage issue and replaced the 12V battery, claiming this would resolve the problem. However, the exact same failure occurred again shortly after leaving the dealership. The battery replacement did not fix the root cause. Safety Concern: Local dealership technicians do not currently possess a viable or permanent corporate fix from Honda for this issue. This creates a severe and unpredictable safety hazard where the vehicle can randomly stall and immobilize itself at busy intersections, highway off-ramps, or left-turn lanes. Honda must issue an immediate safety alert and an official recall to replace the defective starter motor components or update the Engine Control Module (ECM) software before an injury or fatal accident occurs.
