SERVICE BRAKES
I was given the notice in February 2024 that there was an issue with the integrated brake system and as of today June 4,2024 the dealer states they do not have the parts to fix the issue. It has been 4 months driving a car that is potentially unsafe due to Integrated Brake system. Please advise when BMW is required to have the problem fixed.

BMW has a voice assistant "BMW Assistant" which I have turned off. I verified the setting through a call today with Kingsley of the BMW Genius hotline, 844-443-6487. The problem I am experiencing is that although turned off, the Assistant keeps trying to turn itself on by asking permission which I am driving. One has to either press a button or repeatedly speak to it to try and stop its message. Not only irritating, but it happens during turn by turn navigation and causes distracted driving., I came close to having a collision a couple of times when this happened. Note that Kingsley confirmed that it would continue to occur in the future at random times and there is no way to turn it off. I am assuming at this time it is just a way to try and collect more information to sell. If the Assistant tried to do this when the car is started and stationary, while still irritating, there would be no distracted driving. this a a problem waiting to happen. The contact owns a 2023 BMW X1. The contact stated while driving 50 MPH and depressing the brake pedal, the vehicle failed to respond, swerved, and came to a complete stop in the middle of the highway. The traction control, ABS, and check engine warning lights were illuminated. Additionally, the messages "Warning" and "Computer Error Fault" were displayed. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to shift into gear while attempting to drive. A Police officer blocked the vehicle until the vehicle was towed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed, and the dealer determined that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V104000 (Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Service Brakes); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact had not yet received the recall notification. The dealer informed the contact that the vehicle was temporarily repaired and test-driven and that the vehicle was safe to drive. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. POWER TRAIN
The auto start/stop on this car is super slow and will turn off the engine before the car comes to a complete stop. It causes confusion at intersections because of the slow getaway and has nearly caused several collisions. For instance, last week I was turning left at an intersection. The left turn was a yield, so i am turning across oncoming traffic. This is the usual intersection in my city. I did not come to a complete stop and started to turn left. I left plenty of space to the oncoming traffic. To my surprise, the engine had turned off and I sat in the intersection pressing the gas pedal to no power. I essentially coasted most of the way through the intersection before the power came back. By that point, I was pushing the gas so hard that when the engine started, I nearly lost control because of the sudden jolt of acceleration while turning. This has happened multiple times and puts drivers of the X1 and others at risk. I've owned and driven hundreds of cars with auto start/stop and this has to be the worst by far. I cannot understand why the engine will turn off before the car comes to a stop. This is more typical of a mild-hybrid drivetrain, except this car does not have an electric engine. It happens with no consistency, so there's no way to adapt driving style. There is only one way to disable the start/stop, and it's deep within the menus (several button clicks on a touch screen-only display), and then it only disables it for the current trip. The dealer has mentioned it's not great but has no way to fix as it's a software problem. Zero warning lamps.

STEERING
Upon straight line driving, vehicle has abruptly cut to the left into the opposing driving lane. Had another vehicle been approaching, could have resulted in a collision. It has occurred randomly on three different occasions over two month period. Have been trying to get with the dealer for a week. They don't seem to consider it urgent. So far, there have been no incidents requiring police or visible signs of damage. Abrupt maneuver was preceded by a mechanical "ping" sound followed by a sensation the car was being struck from behind. The incident has made me concerned to drive the car as well as reluctant to keep it even if dealer finds something he can fix.

The contact owns a 2023 BMW X1. The contact stated that when the vehicle is on any slight incline, when parked, when the vehicle was placed in reverse (R) or in drive (D) the vehicle will roll backward or forward for about one or two feet before the vehicle responds to the accelerator pedal and the transmission gear selected. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact stated he would depress the brake pedal due to vehicle rolling in the opposite direction from which he intended and the vehicle would stop. The contact also stated that if the vehicle rolls back at any sort of speed, approximately 3 to 4 MPH, the vehicle automatic braking system would engage and stop the vehicle. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent but was occurring at every time the vehicle was parked on an incline. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was scheduled for normal service and software updates. The contact stated that a software update to remedy "drive off characteristics" and "throttle input lag" was installed, however the roll away failure was still occurring. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 500.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
The car has a serious turbo lag. When I stepped on the gas it would take a few seconds for the car to move. I was very nervous driving it, as it was difficult to judge when I could enter or cross a stream of traffic safely. This is a serious safety issue. The dealership offered to come to my home with a loaner and have one of their employees accompany me while I drove the car to illustrate the issue. The person readily agreed several times there was an issue in the way the turbo or transmission was functioning. He loaded the car on the flatbread to the dealership and left me with a loaner. After checking out the issue with my brand new car the dealer agreed it was a problem. They said they would check for a software update, which they did and installed it. They held it again overnight to test it the next day after the software update. The service manager advised that the software update did not fix the issue, and BMW told them that the car was designed to work that way. After hearing this I looked online for people with the same issue, and I readily found several examples including a person that regularly reviews new cars in video and said the turbo lag was dangerous and he would not be surprised if there was a recall in the future. How can the service department see a problem and the manufacturer say it was designed to work that way? If so, customer should be advised, hey when you step on the gas the car may not move for a few seconds!

This vehicle has on numerous times has had delayed acceleration from a stop or rolling stop. The hesitation is random and unpredictable. The vehicle will be unresponsive for a second or two and then a surge of acceleration will jolt the vehicle forward. This causes an unsafe situation in which defensive maneuvering can be delayed. Accelerating from a stop sign or traffic light can become dangerous due to the significant lag between stepping on the gas pedal and the movement of the vehicle.

Email sent to BMW describing a hesitancy or delay on acceleration from a dead stop: I have attached a link below to a blog from January, 2023, describing this problem on 2023 BMW X1; it includes a description of the issue on a video review of this car by Consumers Report. Apparently, this has not been corrected. My new 2023 X1 has this significant and dangerous problem. I was at the dealer service department for 2 1/2 hours this morning and they claimed not to be aware of the problem, although the technician did recognize the hesitancy. They also had no repair or correction from BMW. That is inexcusable. A second delay on accelerating from a stop making a turn onto or merging onto a highway, could result in a collision. I assume that BMW is waiting for enough reports of that happening before doing something about it. I am not interested in explanations or excuses. I assume the it is due to the engine stop/start mechanism. I want it corrected. I am leaving on a road trip in 2 weeks and am afraid to take this car on the trip. I realize that if I turn off the stop/start mechanism on each startup or drive in Sport mode, and the hesitancy does not occur. That is not an acceptable alternative for a $58,000, BMW X1, especially for a recognized defect in the car’s manufacture or software that has been known for at least 10 months. This report is for a 2023 BMW x1 with a dual clutch transmission. I was driving on a four lane road with a 35 mph speed limit and attempting to make a left turn. I was stopped at the light waiting the oncoming traffic to clear to make the left turn (from the left most of the two lanes). There was a significant delay in the car moving after pressing the accelerator allowing for the oncoming traffic to get within a dangerous range before the car finally moved. The car did make the left turn quickly, but the delay in initiating the turn was quite notable. The care was in the "Personal" drive mode and the auto hold function was not activated, nor was the auto off engaged when stopped. I don't use the paddle shifters and the car was in Drive. The engine was running when the accelerator was pressed. I have noticed this delay to accelerate at other times with the car is in first gear (moving from a slowed or stopped position), but I have not yet reported to the dealer (but have seen discussion of this issue on online owners forums). The delay doesn't happen when the car is moving or beyond first gear. Acceleration is not impacted once out of first gear.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: WARNINGS
While I was driving my BMW X1 1 to 3 weeks ago, frontal collision warning malfunction, pedestrian alert and request service flashed. It was a distraction and not safe. When My husband brought it to the dealership, they were not certain how to fix it. They took a video while doing diagnostic. The right bumper is pop out a little bit because it got hooked to a protruding rod in a concrete parking block while I was parking in front of a food store in Raritan sometime last year. I did not have it fix yet because it was not so obvious and the aesthetics of the car was not much affected. For that reason, the man in the video was saying that he saw a little damage there and was assuming that there’s sort of impact there to the right but it’s hard for him to tell. He was talking of a hard impact which did not happen. He said, visually he could not see anything that is bent but usually if there is a hard impact, it usually twigs the knuckle or the tire rod and he was pointing to those. He also said that when there is a hard impact, they usually recommend to replace the steering rack which is very delicate electronic steering rack and he was pointing where it is. He said, those 3 parts need to be replaced and he will do an alignment once they’re done. He said the reason why always the collision warning are coming on are because of all the steering angle faults from the steering moving so far off. I spoke with the manager last Monday and agreed with alignment but he said if the warning won’t go away after then, I have to spend about $5,000 to replace all those 3 parts. They were not listening that the car did not get a hard impact that’s why they could not see anything bent. It was just the right side of the bumper that was hooked to a rod. They did not even talk about checking the cameras or sensor of the car which according to google is the common cause of frontal collision malfunction. The root cause should be found to fix the problem.

The car was displaying these messages: Frontal Collision Warning System: Malfunction, Brake intervention not available. Visual and acoustic ⚠️ warnings active. Consult service center. Daytime Pedestrian Warning reduced:Brake intervention not possible, but visual and acoustic warnings are still given. Consult service center. It was inspected by the dealership but they were saying that I have to pay $5,000 for it to be fixed which is not right because I think it is a manufacturer’s defect. They were blaming it to a collision which never happened. A portion of the right side of the bumper came off sometime last year because as I was trying to park it, it got hooked to a rod in a parking block. It is not even obvious that’s why I did not have if fix yet, not a priority for my budget. I need a car to go to work. An unfix controller area network and electronic control units could lead to fatal accident.
