2021-2024 Audi A/C Compressor Replacement TSB

This bulletin outlines a mandatory procedure for all A/C compressor replacements across all Audi models from 2010 to 2024. The core requirement for any Audi A/C compressor replacement is the completion of an ODIS GFF cooling performance test plan.

• Revision 9 (July 19, 2023): Revised header to include Model Year 2024.
• Revision 8 (May 6, 2022): Revised header to include Model Year 2023.
• Revision 7 (September 14, 2021): Revised header to include Model Year 2022. Service clarifications were made regarding the test plan location in ODIS for BEV and PHEV vehicles, and the TAC contact requirement was removed.

Why This Matters

Any replacement of an A/C compressor—regardless of the reason for failure—must include an ODIS GFF cooling performance test plan. This test plan, specifically the Function Test Log version of the A/C system, is crucial for documenting the recovered refrigerant volume. This GFF test plan requirement is mandatory without exception to ensure proper system function and compliance.

Repair Procedure Summary

Before replacing the A/C compressor, technicians must run the ODIS GFF test plan. The navigation path for this test plan varies depending on the specific Audi vehicle model and its equipment level. The A/C cooling performance test is categorized as a 'function test' within the ODIS diagnosis program.

For vehicles equipped with 08 - Heating and Air Conditioning Electronics, technicians can navigate via two primary paths:

• Guided Functions tab: Select "08 – Front A/C display control head – E87" then proceed to "08 Heating/Air Conditioning Electronics," followed by "functions," and finally "08-Other Functions."
• Test plan tab: Select "Body" then "Heating / Air Conditioning," followed by "01 – On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capable systems," then "08 Climatronic control module, functions J255," and finally "08-General function tests."

For BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) vehicles with C5 - Thermal Management Control Module, the navigation is:

• "Diagnostic capable system" then "00C5 - Thermal Management Control Module -J1024-" followed by "00C5 - Thermal management control module, functions," and finally "00C5 - Basic Setting" then "00C5 - Basic setting complete."

For PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) vehicles with C5 - Thermal Management Control Module, the navigation is:

• "Body" then "Heating / Air Conditioning," followed by "01 - On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capable systems," then "C5 - Thermal Management Control Module -J1024-" followed by "00C5 – Thermal management control module, functions," and finally "00C5 - Basic Setting" then "00C5 - Basic setting complete."

Once the function test has been added to the list of "Tests in current test plan," technicians must select "Vehicle is not cooling" to proceed. The cooling system performance test plan can then be completed following the prompts. If the A/C performance test returns "No malfunctions," no repairs are needed. If the A/C performance test returns a malfunction, diagnosis and repair should be performed as needed. If the compressor is found faulty and replaced, technicians must:

• Upload a final protocol of the Diagnostic Log to GFF Paperless.
• Print out and attach the "Function Test" version of the diagnostic log to the replaced compressor for return to the WPRC. It is not necessary to print and attach the complete diagnostic log; only the test plan section is required.

Important Warnings

As previously mentioned, the cooling performance test plan is in various locations depending on the vehicle and equipment level. This variation in test plan location does not in any way waive the requirement for this test plan to be run before an air conditioning compressor is replaced. If the test plan is missing or cannot be found in ODIS, an ODIS Feedback must be filed.
