I was driving on the highway when I heard a pop like a loud fuse sound from the back seat area. Suddenly the car dropped 15 mph from 70 mph to 55 mph and the battery and electrical system warning lights came on and the vehicle said check electrical system. I was able to continue with my hazard lights on to exit the highway, at which point the max speed of the vehicle dropped to 45 mph. It would not go faster no matter how hard I pushed the gas pedal. I was able to pull over to a gas station and park in a spot but the vehicle had to be towed. When the tow truck arrived, the vehicle also flashed with the 12V battery low warning. It was diagnosed as a failed ICCU, which rapidly drained the 12V battery. The car is only 4 months old with about 7,300 miles. This is a serious safety concern, especially with the sudden failure and loss of power. I’m lucky I wasn’t hit and that I was able to get off the road before it totally died.

Upon connecting a level 2 charger, I heard a loud POP, then the dashboard said charging failed, check Electrical system. From then on, the car would not be able to charge on level 2. The dealership determined that it was an ICCU failure, which is very well documented and experienced by owners in online forums. In my situation, no one was put at risk, however many owners have reported it happening while they were traveling at highway speeds. When this happens at highway speeds, it causes the car to slow down immediately, which is extremely dangerous. The part number of the ICCU is the same as the original, which means it's still the same part that could fail at any time. My car has been updated to the latest recall software to motivate the ICCU failures but it still happened to me. Please put pressure on Hyundai and Kia to fix this issue and recall all ioniq 5s and ev6 models

I am submitting this as a supplemental statement to my existing NHTSA safety complaint regarding my electric vehicle, KIA EV6, 2023 model. Since my original filing, the vehicle has now experienced loss of power / loss of propulsion a total of three times. These incidents occur without warning, are unpredictable, and render the vehicle unsafe to operate. The vehicle can suddenly lose motive power, creating a serious risk of collision, particularly in traffic or at speed. The manufacturer and authorized dealership have been unable to identify the root cause or permanently repair the defect. Dealer documentation reflects that the issue “cannot be replicated,” and no corrective action beyond temporary battery charging or system reset has been performed. No explanation has been provided as to why the power loss occurred or how it will be prevented from recurring. Because the defect is intermittent and safety-critical, I no longer feel safe driving this vehicle and have stopped operating it entirely. A reasonable consumer would consider repeated, unexplained loss of propulsion to present an unreasonable risk to safety. I am submitting this update so NHTSA is aware that: The defect is recurrent (three incidents) The condition remains unresolved The vehicle is unsafe for continued use I respectfully request that NHTSA review this matter for potential investigation, as loss of propulsion in an electric vehicle poses a serious safety hazard to the driver and others on the road. ICCU fail at 58,000 miles. + the front fuse under the front seat. Rendered the car immobile and drained the 12 volt battery. Dealer replaced the iccu and fuse but refused to replace 12 volt, saying that it is covered up to 36k miles. They said ir can just be recharged. But since there repair took a long time, the battery was sitting fully discharged all this time. After that sitting period it would not charge back. So the fault resulted in a week of covered repairs and an extra 12 volt battery cost on an ev, not covered by the dealer.

While driving, the car all of a sudden lost power - forcing me to pull over. If this were to happen while on the freeway, a crash would have been imminent. This is a known issue with kia/Hyundai EV's where the ICCU fails and causes the vehicle to lose power suddenly.

Car said there was a 12V low battery danger and said to pull over immediately while driving. After taking it to the dealership, they said my ICCU went out. So they had to replace it. I've read that the ICCU on these cars are notorious for failing and needing replacement.

The ICCU charge control unit for Kia electric vehicles that immediately depletes the 12v battery & significantly reduces motive power forcing you to pull over with no countdown to how long one has in terms of distance or duration. This uncertainty is absolutely unsafe as you cannot know how long it is safe to keep driving before the vehicle ceases to move. This ICCU failure has been affecting several 2022 onwards Kia vehicles & even replacing this component does not guarantee this failure will not recur & needs serious action & accountability to Kia.

The ICCU failed in my car while attempting to charge the vehicle while at home in my garage. This component has a known history of failure while driving and now that it has been replaced with an identical unit, I fear for my safety while driving since I live in a remote area and rely on the car for transportation in sub-freezing temps and winter conditions. While the dealer has replaced the ICCU, there is no acknowledgement from the manufacturer that the failure mode of this component has undergone any redesign or improvement to warrant trust that it will not happen again. It is a ticking bomb.

Kia has a known ICCU issue with several of their electric vehicles. Mine went out yesterday creating an extremely dangerous situation on the road. After it blew, I lost the ability to accelerate or steer. This was obviously very scary for me and the drivers around me. I feel very lucky to have not been hit by another car. Although Kia is replacing these, this does not guarantee a fix. That is to say, the ICCU has the potential to blow again after replaced because the core issue is not something that Kia group has reengineered. I should not have to fear getting into my vehicle and wonder if it will blow again. I hope the government steps in and conducts an investigation into this. It’s only a matter of time before someone, unfortunately, will lose a life over this.

The ICCU that charges the 12V on board battery failed to keep the battery charged and it made my vehicle a paper weight. Had to have it towed to my local Kia dealership to wait 2 weeks for an appt. Hasn’t been repaired yet and I’m sure it won’t be a short wait after they schedule the repair

The rear door of my KIA EV6 intermittently fails to open even when the vehicle is unlocked. The issue has been recorded on video and reported to an authorized KIA dealer, but it has not been repaired. A child safety seat is installed in the rear seat, and this defect creates a serious safety risk in an emergency where immediate access to the child is required. The vehicle is unsafe due to this defect.

I luckily was able to roll to the side of the road and park the car. My car could not change gears, doors would not work, trying to jumpstart the 12V did not work.

The vehicle experienced a total power failure resulting in complete inoperability (no start, no unlock, no electrical response). This is the second occurrence within approximately five weeks. The most recent incident occurred after the vehicle was fully charged and driven the day prior. There were no warning lights or messages before the failure. The vehicle was previously inspected by an authorized dealer and a manufacturer service campaign related to the charging/low-voltage system was performed, after which the problem recurred. This condition can strand the driver without warning and poses a safety concern.

First year of ownership rear engine needed to be replaced. The car literally stopped where I was on the road and had to be towed to dealer. It took a month to get the motor replaced. After that, my car stopped while I was leaving my house driving it out of my driveway. There were red warining lights and sounds and then it just suddenly died seconds later. It had to be towed to the dealer. They said it was fixed and that the 12v battery wasnt being charged. Then I was leaving church when my car died on me again. Same issue. Now, the third time in this vehicles 2 years of life, my car died while I was on the highway driving to work in the morning in the passing lane during rush hour. The dash went red and waring lights and sounds with a message get to safety quick check electrical system and it only gave me a few seconds the car suddenly just stopped running and I was coasting on the highway to try to get to safety. I was going 70mph in the passing lane during rush hour, I could not steer to the left to coast off the road because on my left it was just a ditch no side road to stop on, I saw in the right lane a car that was a length or so behind so I cut my wheel straight across the right lane where I coasted to a complete dead stop barely making it to the side of the road. The side of this highway was barely the width of my car so traffic flying next to me was just inches away from my drivers side door.... I called roadside assistance and had it towed to the dealer. They then told me about the recall - which I had already had it into the dealer to fix the last time it was there for this same issue. The car is 2 years old and so far I have had it stop dead in its tracks on me 4 times! I have such stress and anxiety about continuing driving this vehicle as it is completely unsafe! I almost died last week when this happened. My safety and others on the highway that day were at risk. This could have been catastrophic.
