In 2019, Honda extended the warranty on two components of the A/C systems in 2016-2018 Civics: the condenser and the compressor shaft seal. However, it did not extend the warranty on the evaporator. I took my Civic to the dealer to diagnose an A/C issue where the system stopped putting out cold air after approximately 45 mins of driving. The dealer found leaks in the condenser, compressor shaft seal, and evaporator. Dealer received approval to replace the first two parts under warranty. However, Honda would not cover the evaporator. The dealer told me I would need to replace the evaporator, at a cost of nearly $2500, in order to recharge the A/C. Simple internet research confirms this is a common problem. Honda should be including the evaporator in its extended warranty because it seems to fail at the same rate as the other parts and because it is effectively impossible to replace the two covered parts without replacing the evaporator--which is by far the most expensive of the 3 parts to replace.

ENGINE
Engine failure while driving down the highway. Was able to safely get off the highway without being able to accelerate. Car was towed to the Honda dealership where all the maintenance has been done. They said the car had a cylinder misfire and would need the engine replaced. It would cost $13,000. This car had already had the A/C, fuel pump and transmission replaced in the five short years I owned it. It was garage stored and had under 50,000 miles. All the maintenance was done through a certified Honda dealership.

STEERING
On [XXX] the steering system on my 2022 Honda Civic failed as I was exiting the the city's inner loop in downtown Rochester, NY. Simultaneously, the entire dash screen lit up. It was fortunately a momentary failure and I was able to avoid an accident. I had purchased the car 9 days before, on [XXX]. In conversation with the sales rep., I mentioned that the steering didn't feel quite right. He suggested that I just needed to become familiar with the newness of it. I accepted his explanation. I was paying for a Certified Pre-Owned Honda, and felt confident that the vehicle had been fully inspected for any steering issues. The day before the steering failure, I notified the same sales rep that the car's maintenance signal went on. He suggested it was indicating an oil change, which would have in itself been an issue since the car was not due for one. After notifying the sales rep and dealership manager of the steering failure, the manager arranged for delivery of a loaner car and had my vehicle returned to their service department. The following day, he relayed to me that the service tech did not find a problem and questioned if I could be mistaking the lane assist technology as a steering failure. I assured him that wasn't the case and, again, described the flash of light from the dash that accompanied the failure. By this time, I had discovered online the Honda recalls for steering failure including the 2022 Civic. I also read driver reports that described the lit-up dash. The manager claimed not to know of any recalls or problems but said he would pass the information on to the service tech. I asked if the service tech. would know if the previous owner had the car serviced for any recalls since I only had access to current recall status. I'm waiting to hear back from the manager. The contact stated that while driving at 75 MPH, the driver-side air bag deployed on its own without a crash or impact with an object. As a result, the driver lost visibility and control of the vehicle, resulting in a crash with another vehicle. The contact's vehicle veered into oncoming traffic. Similar to the recall made for Honda civics years 2022-2024 for difficulty steering due to improperly produced steering gearbox, in experiencing difficulty steering. In particular, it is felt as a sticky feeling when making left turns. When making slight left turns, the steering wheel will remain “stuck” in a turned position unless forced to realign straight. The sticky wheel and extra effort to stay aligned in lanes increased risk to crashes and accidents. Many people online have expressed issues in this generation of civics (10th gen 2016-2021) but since it is not a recall, it is costly to diagnose or fix even though a recall was made for those made after.

My car has 105,000 miles on it, and I experienced a transmission failure. There were no warning signs beforehand. No sensor lights going off, no alarming sounds or feelings from driving the car. It just happened randomly. The mechanics who looked at my car said they have never seen this before. I am told my car is not affected by the recall, but that is hard to believe since the 2015 Honda civic has a history of faulty automatic transmissions.

ENGINE
Few months afyer i bought this car brand new it started leaking oil from valve cover gasket. Took the car u to dealer i was told its normal to leak out which surprised me to hear from service that ots normal to leak oil from calve cover gasket. It was replaced. At 70k miles i syarted seeing oil seeping through bell housing but it wasn't alot so i though it might have spilled during oil change. At 110k miles it is leaking alot and after taking it to repair shop im told that its leaking from rear main seal and its leaking onto hot exhaust. Unfortunately honda wont cover this because of the mileage. Hondas used to be reliable but not anymore.
