This noise typically occurs within a speed range of 15 to 65 mph and can become more pronounced with changes in road speed.

Alternatively, drivers might see a "Dynamic Stability Control malfunction indicator lamp" illuminate on their dashboard, accompanied by a "Check Control Message." These warnings indicate an issue detected by the vehicle's Integrated Brake module.

Fault Codes

When the "Dynamic Stability Control malfunction indicator lamp" or "Check Control Message" appears, technicians may find specific fault codes stored in the Integrated Brake module's fault memory. These codes point to issues with the wheel speed sensors:

• 4809B7: Wheel speed sensor - rear left - tooth missing
• 4809C2: Wheel speed sensor - rear right - tooth missing
• 480AB4: Wheel speed sensor - rear right – noise monitoring
• 480AAD: Wheel speed sensor - rear left – noise monitoring

Diagnosis and Cause

The SIB 33 01 26 identifies two primary causes for these complaints. For BMW X1 X2 rear axle noise issues, insufficient protection allows water to enter the wheel bearing, leading to corrosion of the inner race. This corrosion is the root cause of the humming or clicking sound.

For fault memory entries and warning messages, the problem stems from foreign particles or corrosion at the interface where the wheel speed sensor meets its mounting point. This interference can lead to inaccurate readings or a complete loss of signal from the sensor.

Repair Procedure Summary

The recommended correction for both noise complaints and fault memory entries is to replace both rear axle wheel bearings. For noise complaints, the procedure involves directly replacing the wheel bearings as outlined in BMW's internal repair instructions, REP 33 41 180.

If fault codes are present, a vehicle test must first be performed to confirm the Integrated Brake system fault memory entries match the listed fault codes. Once confirmed, both rear axle wheel bearings are then replaced following the same REP 33 41 180 procedure.
