My Ex and I purchased a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited Ultimate 3.3L engine. We always took the vehicle to the dealership for any and all services. We paid off our loan on the vehicle mid 2022. In December of 2022, the vehicle died. No warning lights or signs of damage. Beginning of 2023 I had the vehicle towed to the dealership. I was told that the engine needed replaced. After researching, I discovered 420 of the same vehicle had been under RECALL campaign 168. I believe wholeheartedly that my VIN was missed during this recall, as the engine in my vehicle died for the exact same reason as the other 420 vehicles. This is a recall! I’ve been in contact with Hyundai and told that because the vehicle is no longer under “warranty”, it will not be covered. However, Federal Law says that any vehicle with a recall is covered for 15 years after the first purchase of the vehicle. I did approve repairs because when you pay off a vehicle, you hope that the corporate office of Hyundai will honor the contract of following through with recalls. I’m in the process of getting disability. Im having surgery on my Back Nov. 2nd. I’ve been diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder this year and have many follow up appts and physical therapy that I have not been able to make the appts due to not having a vehicle. In April, my ex was going through some mental health issues and kicked me out. I’ve been staying at a family members Airbnb but it’s 1 hour away from all of my doctors. I feel that Hyundai is not honoring the Recall because they missed my VIN during their initial inspections of the defective parts. Many other complaints of Engine issues have been posted on the NTSB website along with my own. A Hyundai rep that I spoke to today suggested I contact the BBB in hopes there is something you could help me with. I feel this is a huge disruption in my life as I should be focusing on my health, however I have no means of transportation, even after paying off the car. NHTSA Recall Number23V651000 - I was told this issue would be fixed by November 2024. To date "no remedy has been identified" per Hyundai, however, the same thing happened in other vehicles with this manufacturer and a remedy has been implemented, the ABS brake module has been replaced. Hyundai is not following through with this. I am unable to drive my vehicle as it my spontaneously combust. I cannot drive my grandchildren in a vehicle that may catch on fire at any time. There is a remedy, replace the ABS break module. Hyundai is not doing this in a timely fashion.

The engine in my 2017 Santa Fe failed without notice. Upon starting the vehicle on 12/12/23 it would not run and upon checking had burned through oil leaving none in engine. This resulted is burned out spark plugs and leaving the car no longer able to drive. I took vehicle to dealership where spark plugs were replaced and engine failed again on test drive with technician. Hyundai contacted multiple times and refused to asssit with repairs despite multiple engine failures.

I purchased this vehicle in early 2023. I was driving on the interstate and received a TINY rock chip that immediately cracked across my entire windshield in April of 2023 resulting in my replacing the windshield. I have since received two TINY rock chips one on 11/25/23 and one on 01/03/24 resulting in immediate cracks. the rock chips are barely visible and as soon as it was heard each time, the windshield cracked considerably. The windshield is faulty and defective. I have driven the same interstate for the last 10 years and have never had this issue with any other vehicle.

Vehicle has stalled couple of times while driving. One on the service road just about to merge on the highway 1604 North after taking left turn from the Potranco road about a year ago. Steering got locked and engine died, I managed to pull over to the right shoulder into the parking lot of Med Clinic. After couple tries, I was able to get it going. There is occasional check engine light on that goes off after some time of driving and not sure if this is related to stalling of engine. There is a history of oil leak under the hood. I received recall service notice for leaking cylinder head gasket which outlined same issues that I encountered before and took vehicle to the dealership. It was kept for 2 days for service and was returned to me. There is still sign of wetted oil on the parts. There is no sign that I could see of opening and taking parts apart for the so-called completed service, dust and debris seem to be untouched. I have a doubt that service evert took place. I filed a complaint with the Hyundai Motors requesting independent assessment if gasket was actually changed. They sent an acknowledgement of receiving the complaint, but no one has contacted me.

The engine caught fire and the vehicle is a total loss. Acceleration became inconsistent at time of the incident while driving on the freeway. Once that was noticed, and at a speed of 50mph, I immediately heard a loud clicking noise coming from the engine. ALL warning lights also immediately went off. I noticed white smoke and pulled over on the freeway. Once parked, black smoke was emerging from the engine. I exited the vehicle to safety and within 30 seconds, flames emerged from the vehicle. The vehicle maintenance was kept current during the 7 months of ownership. There were no prior warnings of any issues before the incident occurred.

The motor locked up with no warning and we lost all vehicle power and left us stranded. All maintenance and oil changes have been kept up with regularly. I have been reading up and Hyundai did a voluntary recall for only a few motors that were manufactured over about a 3-week period that were having this same issue. Apparently, our vehicle was not covered under that recall even though it is having the same problem. We had it towed to a dealership and they said that this is a known problem and they see this very often. We spoke to Hyundai and they told us that it was not a known problem and they were not going to warranty it because we were the second owners. Upon conducting some additional research, we found that this issue is known to occur in these vehicles. The internal bearings wear out between 80 and 120 thousand miles, resulting in the motor locking up without any warning signs, such as a check engine light. Our vehicle had only reached 92,000 miles. We had the vehicle towed to our mechanic and he opened the motor to confirm that the bearings did go out prematurely and caused this issue. This is a huge safety concern. If we were on a highway when this happened, it would have been catastrophic and deadly especially when it happens without any warning. The vehicle is available for inspection if needed.

Hyundai Is aware of the connecting rod bearings inside the engine may wear prematurely, which can result in engine damage. However, when I contacted Hyundai about having this issue with my 2017 Santa Fe, they said my vehicle year does not qualify for the extended recall (10 years/ 120,000 miles) which they have on other vehicles years that are experience. My vehicle currently has 92525 miles. My complaint is I believe Hyundai should cover my 2017 vehicle, knowing that they have this issue with their engine. Any enforcement action or advice that NHTSA can provide would be appreciated. Sincerely, [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

While driving on the freeway, another vehicle passed me in the lane to the right of me. Right before it passed me, my car triggered automatic emergency braking for no reason. It was very terrifying. The other car was in its own lane the entire time. This has happened multiple times.

While driving on the interstate the vehicle suddenly shuddered and immediately died, dash lights were still on but all power was cut off. Cars around me were swerving to avoid hitting me from behind as well as avoiding cars in the inside lane. Thankfully able to coast to the narrow edge of the road without a grave incident. Restarted the car with a terrible metallic screetching noise and limp along the side of the interstate to the nearest off ramp.

Engine failed due to excessive oil consumption while driving. Safety was put at risk due to poor build leading to failure while driving. It has been inspected by the manufacturer and was determined it needed to be replaced entirely. Low engine oil light came on, replaced oil, then shortly after failed while driving, after codes disappeared.
