I own a 2019 Toyota Camry SE, 4-door automatic transmission, with approximately 59,500 miles. On October 20, 2026, while driving on a roadway with multiple traffic lights, I stopped at a red light. When the light turned green, I pressed the accelerator, and the vehicle made a loud noise but would barely move and accelerated very slowly. At the same time, I noticed a strong oil smell inside the vehicle. There were no warning lights or messages displayed before the failure. Because the vehicle was unable to accelerate normally when traffic began moving, my safety and the safety of other motorists were put at risk. The driver behind me expected my vehicle to move when the light turned green and nearly collided with the rear of my vehicle when it failed to accelerate. The sudden loss of power created the risk of a rear-end collision and prevented me from maintaining the normal flow of traffic through the intersection. I was able to pull the vehicle to the side with the help of other people pushing the car of the road. I shut off the car and attempt to restart it several times. The vehicle did not restart. The oil odor remained noticeable during the incident. The vehicle was subsequently taken to Athens Toyota for inspection. After diagnosing the vehicle, the dealership technician determined that the cause of the problem was a sudden transmission failure. The sudden transmission failure resulted in a loss of vehicle propulsion and created a significant safety hazard while driving in traffic. The transmission has not yet been repaired or replaced. Answers: 1) Transmission failure. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. 2) The vehicle suddenly lost the ability to accelerate normally while entering an intersection when the traffic light turned green, creating a risk of a rear-end collision and endangering myself and other motorists. 3) Yes. By Athens Toyota 4) Same As (3) 5) No, warning lights, messages before failure. The symptoms first appeared on Oct20.

When i purchased this vehicle during 2020 i noticed that the car runs very sluggish and the transmission would jerk a lot when slowing down and when speeding back up, ive been able to replicate this problem for the dealership and i took it to them and all they said they can do is reset the transmission and check the fluid levels. So for the past 4 years ive been driving it like that with no issues resolved. Until this year 2026, i took the car back to the dealership and i explained to them that i hear a whining sound coming from the transmission when its runs at 3k RPMS and they were able to replicate the noise and all they said is they cant do nothing since the transmission still runs even tho their is a clear sign that the transmission is giving up and the jerking and hesitation of the transmission is clear. i also have statement from the service manager claiming their is a whine sound.

I am filing a safety complaint regarding a transmission failure in my 2019 Toyota Camry. I purchased this vehicle from a local Ford dealership in an as-is sale with approximately 133,000 miles. Only three months after purchase, the transmission began failing while I was driving. The vehicle stopped shifting gears properly, began slipping and jerking, and ultimately lost all ability to move forward. This occurred while driving on the street and created a potentially dangerous situation due to the sudden loss of vehicle propulsion. The vehicle currently has fewer than 140,000 miles. I have been quoted approximately $8,400 by AAMCO to replace the transmission. I was told the transmission cannot be repaired or rebuilt and must be completely replaced, with only a 12-month/12,000-mile warranty on the replacement. I have heard from multiple sources that transmission problems may be a known issue affecting this model. I am concerned that a potentially widespread defect could cause other vehicles to lose propulsion unexpectedly while traveling in traffic or at highway speeds, putting drivers, passengers, and others on the road at risk. A major transmission failure only three months after purchasing the vehicle is extremely concerning. My primary concern is not the repair expense, but whether this failure reflects a broader safety defect that could affect other 2019 Toyota Camry owners. I respectfully request that NHTSA investigate reports of transmission failures in 2019 Toyota Camry vehicles, determine whether these failures present an unreasonable safety risk, and take appropriate action if a safety-related defect is identified. I am submitting this complaint to help ensure that other drivers are not exposed to a similar potentially dangerous loss of vehicle propulsion.

The dealership wanted to charge me $300 to replace the handle for a fourth time, but they refuse to look at the internal sticking latch defect mentioned in Toyota TSB T-T2-0323-19. I could not safely drive a car with a broken door while waiting for a approval process, so I am having a local mechanic fix it. / want to submit my receipt to this case file for a corporate reimbursement check.
