There was a recall on this engine which I had updated the knock sensor campaign. While on the highway the engine light started flashing and the speed was reduced to 20 mph on a major highway. I had to almost cause a wreck to get off highway. The vehicle went into limp mode with no prior indication

We purchased this car brand new in 2017 for my late mother.... It had 12000 Miles on it and started shaking intensely last year. We took it into Tuttle click Hyundai multiple times and they said it was fine.... Charged us several thousand and it continued to shake so we took it back multiple times. They have taken tons of our money and the car shakes as it drives.... Yesterday we found out that there was a major recall on this engine and we were never notified.

The contact owns a 2019 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that while driving at 30-35 MPH on the expressway, the engine light illuminated, and the vehicle lost motive power. The driver was able to pull over safely. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine needed to be replaced or rebuilt. The vehicle was repaired. While leaving the dealer, there was an abnormal clicking sound coming from the vehicle. The mechanic determined that there was a zip tie making the sound, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was towed to another local dealer, Hyundai of Louisville Service Department (6633 Dixie Hwy, Louisville, KY 40258); where it was diagnosed. The clamps were not installed properly, which caused the issue. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 141,236.

My engine was recalled and they inspected it and said it was fine in 2023. Fast forward to June 2025, My engine failed. I took it back to the dealership and they tested it and said "it was not bad enough to be fixed under the recall." Before I took it the dealership the check engine light was on, reduced power when accelerating, knocking noise from the engine that increases when the rpms increase, and the oil pressure light is flashing. Upon taking it to the dealership the check engine light has been turned off, but all the other issues still remain. All of these issues were components to the recall. I have called Customer Care and they assured me that it would be fixed at no cost under the recall, and then I requested a different dealership due to terrible customer service at the prior dealership. Customer Care then contacted prior dealership, and went based on the incorrect findings of the dealership, they are refusing to fix my engine that is under recall. Because they inspected it in 2023 they marked the recall campaign as closed.

My 2017 Hyundai Tucson 1.6 liter is experiencing severe engine issues that closely mirror those subject to recent class action lawsuits. The engine exhibits excessive oil consumption. I have experienced a sudden loss of power on roadways in traffic as well as on the highway. This issue happened just today. Unfortunately due to a loss of smell, I have been unable to smell if there has been burning oil, however in between my last two oil changes (I only bought the car in October) I had to go it to get it refilled or refill it myself. I use full synthetic oil as well. I brought it into a reputable mechanic and I have been told if I continue to drive the vehicle the excessive oil consumption will lead to premature engine failure, potentially causing a dangerous stall or accident, putting myself and other motorists or pedestrians at risk. The mechanic received codes P0420, P0300, P0302, P0303, and P0304. They were able to conclude oil consumption based on the low amount of oil in the vehicle, the spark plugs being oil fouled, the misfiring on three cylinders, and the P0420 code. I called customer service, the Hyundai dealership in Clive, IA, and the contact for the class action lawsuit and litigation II. I was informed my VIN number was not part of the current recalls or class action, however the symptoms are identical to those widely reported. In the litigation my make and model are mentioned, Hyundai Tucson 2017, however it is listed as the 2.0 liter engine. My engine is mentioned, the 1.6 liter, in at least one other vehicle. I believe this vehicle was only excluded by a lack of representation at the time of the litigations. From my call with the dealership, and in research I am not the only one experiencing this problem. While I was lucky enough not to have been harmed, this has the potential to cause great harm. As someone who works for a DOT, safety first is in everything I do. I believed this necessary to report for the safety of all those involved.

- #11673537July 14, 2025SERVICE BRAKES
The vehicle's brake system intermittently fails after driving over bumps or uneven roads. The brake pedal becomes soft and unresponsive, and the vehicle continues rolling forward for several seconds before the brakes finally engage. This has happened repeatedly while driving home from work. On one occasion, the vehicle rolled through a red light and I had to swerve into oncoming traffic to avoid a collision. This issue first became noticeable in 2022 and has worsened over time. It puts both my safety and the safety of others at serious risk. There are no warning lights or error messages before or during the failure. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Independent mechanics have confirmed that brake pads, rotors, and fluid levels are in good condition. They suggested the cause could be air in the brake lines, a malfunctioning ABS system, or a faulty master cylinder—all potentially covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. The manufacturer’s service center initially refused to inspect the vehicle without an upfront diagnostic fee and only offered assistance after I escalated the matter through repeated complaints. The service director later described the issue as “unsettling but normal,” which is not accurate according to independent professionals. The problem has not been resolved and continues to occur regularly. I am requesting that this be formally investigated as a potential safety defect.

There are several electrical issues occurring that have put me in danger when driving. First the screen both on the windshield and the speedometer screen randomly go out completely and I have no idea how fast I am going or any other important features like how much gas my vehicle has, if the vehicle is over heating. The forward/ break feature has gone off multiple times and the vehicle has stopped in the middle of traffic and the freeway with zero warning and with several car lengths between me and the car in front of me. Almost hit from behind when this happens and has put the vehicle in park on the freeway. Steering wheel has jerked to the side when driving making the vehicle almost hit curbs and other vehicles. Has come back to my vehicle that is off and locked and the ac has been running causing the engine to be hot. All the warning lights have turned on and won't go off even after stopping and restarting the vehicle. The vehicle is currently at the dealership with them having to answer to the problem, stating hyundai is aware of the issues but does not know how to fix it. I bought the car in April 2025 and there is just under 2800 miles on the vehicle.

While driving I noticed my ABS, Traction Control, AEB, and a couple of other lights came on. Upon restarting my car it was still there but the lights went away on their own after a few minutes of driving. They have been periodically turning and and off as I've driven the past couple of days. I went to the local mechanic shop who performed a diagnostic and found it to be a faulty left rear wheel speed sensor. When researching online, I've come across many people with the same make, model, and year as my car that have experienced this issue.

I have a 2017 Hyundai Tucson with approximately 120,000 miles. The vehicle had issues with oil consumption and jerking when put into drive. I took the vehicle to the dealership to be checked and was told it was fine. I recently was driving at 70 mph when the engine light came on and lost power. I had it towed to a mechanic that checked and cylinder #3 had lost compression. After finding this out I did an internet research and found that this is a common issue with this motor and vehicle. My vin is not included in the recall but Hyundai has replaced other engines in “goodwill” when the vin number was not included. One search shows that it usually happens from 120,000 to 150,000 miles. After the mechanic looked at the vehicle, Hyundai instructed me to take it to a dealership. After another tow to the dealership they said it was only the spark plugs but upon futher investigation they found that the cylinder was damaged with scoring to engine. The cost for a used engine with 54,000 miles is 10,000 and is more than the value of the car and the remaining loan amount of 10,000. So far we are out approximately 300.00 in towing fees. The dealership has not yet billed us for the checking they have done. We have contacted Hyundai with a response of no help to replace the engine even though the company has helped others in our situation. We haven’t replaced the motor due to the amount owed, cost of used motor vs the value of the vehicle. The safety of the vehicle is very questionable due to the high incidence of this happening and there could have been catastrophic consequences if I would not have been able to pull off the road.

On a busy highway, my car broke down. It was due to the rod bearings, specifically, the Hyundai Theta "extended warranty"/recall issue, or "recall" issue. There is currently a class action lawsuit against Hyundai. I had the car towed to Hallmark Hyundai in Nashville, TN. I, however, live in Louisville, KY and I was making a road trip to Nashville, TN. I was told by the Service Rep in Nashville that they couldn't provide me with a loaner vehicle because I would be driving it, back home, out of state to Louisville, KY. I paid for a rental car out-of-pocket. Hyundai Corporate told me it would take 60 days to get reimbursed. I picked up the car at the beginning of July, 2025, after the engine was replaced by Hallmark Hyundai. I was told by Hallmark Hyundai that a service employee performed a test drive but it was immediately noticeable to me that there were still issues. I noticed the gears shifting abnormally and problems with acceleration once I first started driving it, post repairs, but assumed I would be told to give it time. Today, [XXX], the car began to have difficulty accelerating once again, and the engine light illuminated. I couldn't accelerate beyond 45 mph. I phoned Hyundai Corporate Customer Care, relayed the issues, and said I needed a rental car the following morning for a job pre-hire meeting and couldn't pay for one since my credit card was already maxed out due to the first out-of-pocket rental. They refused. They told me to work it out with my local Hyundai dealership. The problem with all of this is that the consumer still incurs many hardships even though the car manufacturer is at fault and the dealerships don't always follow the settlement requirements of providing alternate transportation, a loaner or rental. The manufacturer and dealers are not held accountable and settlements that purport consumer recourse are more geared towards the manufacturer staying in business than the consumer being compensated fairly. The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle made an abnormal clacking sound. The vehicle was taken to an independent certified mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the catalytic converter had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the mechanic, where the catalytic converter repair was performed. The contact stated that after the repair, the contact noticed that the instrument panel would turn black and the infotainment system would become inoperable intermittently; however, both systems would reboot independently. Additionally, the vehicle was taken to an unknown dealer, where the air compressor was replaced due to heating system failure. The contact stated that the instrument panel failure recurred intermittently. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle was overheating. The check engine warning light was illuminated and the message "Engine Overheating" was displayed. The vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed with engine misfire. The mechanic determined that the head gasket failure had caused oil to contaminate the coolant reservoir. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was contacted and confirmed that the VIN was not included in a recall. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

I’ve already had my fuel injections changed about 20,000 miles again and my car is starting to stall again check engine light on again seems to be same issue now my car is no longer under warranty. I don’t seem this problem on the recall list but this is not a problem I want to have every 20,000 miles.

On [July 4, 2025], while driving, my vehicle experienced a sudden loss of power followed by smoke and flames coming from the engine compartment. The fire required emergency response and caused significant damage to the vehicle. Thankfully, no one was injured, but the incident posed a serious risk to my safety and others on the road. I had not received any prior warning signs such as engine knocking or warning lights. The fire appears to be directly related to the known defect outlined in Recall 209. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this incident and ensure Hyundai is held accountable for the full scope of this defect, including fire risk. I am also seeking assistance in ensuring Hyundai provides appropriate compensation or resolution for the damages caused.

Engine has rod knock and low power due to rod bearing failure. There was never an illuminated oil light or message of any sort prior to failure. this vehicle has had oil changes regularly and never been an issue till now. With Hyundai not having a recall on this engine, and seeing many other reviews about this same issue it is a very dangerous issue leaving people stranded and loosing power in times where serious harm issues could occur and this issue is very costly being that the engine will have to be replaced. As a consumer taking care of the vehicle and still the engine failing due to the lack of integrity of Hyundai I believe Hyundai should step up and make it right and take care of the people who have spent there hard earned money on these cars and are now left in the dark.
