My car was working fine since I bought it in April 2023. I passed inspection in November 2023. On January 24, after driving for about 15mins, my check engine light began flashing. The car would not accelerate over 25mph. I brought it to a dealership where it has been for 3 days. All communication about this problem was initiated by me, and the only answers I get are vague comments about testing.

Our [XXX] daughter was driving the vehicle from our home to work in Richmond Heights (approx. 19 miles) on [XXX] on {XXX]. At approximately [XXX] and before the [XXX] exit ([XXX] area), the vehicle made a load bang/popping noise, began to lose power, and the interior began to fill with smoke. She was driving in one of the center lanes and luckily made it over to the right shoulder without incident despite traffic and the smoke impairing her view and use of the rear and side mirrors. She immediately got out and called 911. Luckily there was no accident involved and she was not trapped in the vehicle. She was not injured, just very shaken. The vehicle was on fire under the hood and eventually burst into flames. The Kirkwood City Police Officer called the Kirkwood Fire Department and Terry's Towing. The fire was put out, but not before causing the vehicle to be totaled (see photos). Terry's Towing towed the vehicle to its lot, where it is currently stored. The vehicle is a total loss. As we purchased the vehicle from a family member earlier in 2023 as a spare car for our 16yo son and 20yo daughter (when she's home on break from college) for local and short drives, we only carried liability insurance on it with Progressive. We were not aware of Hyundai Recall 251 / NHTSA Recall # 23V651000 until after this happened to our daughter. We have filed a case with Hyundai. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by them or anyone else. The vehicle was running fine. The ABS light had come on sometime prior to this incident. The vehicle was going in for an oil change and system check after the holidays. In the process of obtaining the fire department report. Rear driver door does not open. The door has not been damaged but just stopped opening. It’s a safety issue because if something was to happen they could be stuck in the car.

The passenger side headlight compartment has condensation in it. Enough condensation so the headlights don't work. when I took it in for recall work I mentioned this as I thought that it might have possibly been a short or a loose wire, and they shared that no it's not wired it's just water in that enclosure and I need to pay for it myself to get it replaced to the tune of $1900 for the new part.. I've seen other complaints about the same problem. Why will Hyundai not fix this? I found something from Hyundai that states, do not replace!

- #11567427January 24, 2024UNKNOWN OR OTHER, ENGINE, FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Car has 125,000 mi on it. This will be the 3rd catalytic converter in 2 years. Second one was March of 2022. I have excessive oil consumption (1QT every other week). Which I believe causes the exhaust system to clog. It’s an engine flaw design I believe. The issues isn’t the converter but the oil consumption contributing to the clogging. The vehicle actually had complete engine failure while I was driving on the interstate Dec 23, 2023 driving at 70 miles an hour! It was caused by the clogged converter! I could have died! Thank you.

I was driving at 10 mph speeding up and the engine went out. There was oil in the engine so it wasn’t from lack of maintenance and I just bought the vehicle a month and a half prior to the incident.

- #11567368January 23, 2024UNKNOWN OR OTHER, VISIBILITY:POWER WINDOW DEVICES AND CONTROLS
The window regulator cables for all windows have failed multiple times, even after taking it to the dealership and paying to have this defect “fixed” they fail again. Now the only working window is the drivers and I cannot afford to have the other 3 fixed which is a safety hazard if an emergency were to happen. This is a manufacturer defect and there needs to be a recall done.

The vehicle continues to leak water into the floor carpet even after a recall was supposed to fix the windshield leak problem for this car. This can cause mold.

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated while driving approximately 5 MPH, the vehicle was running rough and would not accelerate as needed. The contact also stated while driving 45 MPH, the vehicle stalled, was shaking, and made an abnormally loud sound while depressing the accelerator pedal. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer due to appointment availability, but another dealer suggested calling the NHTSA Hotline to check for recalls associated with VIN. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 77,000.

Left turn signal intermittently not working. Tapping briskly on the turn signal stalk would make it start back up again. Dealer could not reproduce the issue, so no repairs were made. Still happening 5+ years later.

The check engine light came on in my 2016 Tucson , which only had 77K in mileage. I had it towed to a Hyundai dealership in Richmond, VA. They reported that there was a rod beading issue which would require a total engine rebuild for $15k. I have since learned that there was a class action lawsuit against Hyundai. This recall included the Theta II engine, not the engine in my 2016 Tucson, which is a 1.6 Turbo. The defective part in the Theta II engine is the same defective part in the 1.6 Turbo. When the engine malfunctions, it can cause the engine to go into limp mode which prevents acceleration, it can cause the motor to seize up, or it can cause engine fire. When I contact Hyundai customer service and explained my concern with the engine not being covered in the lawsuit, they admitted that it probably should have been. While the dealership is blaming the issue on a missed oil change, it is a known fact that this is an ongoing issue with the engine. I have documentation attached from my local mechanic sharing the notification Hyundai Technical Service Bulletin. I have since done a lot of reading about the issue with this motor and I have joined several social media groups whose members have all had issue with these engines. These cars are pose a safety risk to the driver and others on the road. They should all be recalled. Please let me know if you require any additional information from me.

With eco/turbo boost engaged, acceleration is intermittently delayed 2-4 seconds. This issue has endured for the last 2 years since I have owned this vehicle. After pulling onto a very busy main road, with power boost engaged and accelerator was fully engaged (to the floor) with NO response, the vehicle stays in place. After looking online, it appears that hundreds of other Hyundai customers have complained about this same defect, boiling it down to a dual clutch transmission. I took my vehicle to the dealership but they cannot repair this unless the acceleration delay happens while being test driven. This is a dangerous and unsafe feature, considering the vehicle has a eco boost system.

- #11567125January 22, 2024UNKNOWN OR OTHER, VISIBILITY:SUN/MOON ROOF ASSEMBLY
Driving down the freeway at normal speeds and my panoramic sunroof literally just exploded, raining tempered glass all over the interior of the vehicle while I was driving. No evidence that it was caused by any road debris, objects, nor falling objects from the sky. I wasn’t driving under a bridge and no cars/trucks were immediately next to me nor in front of me. Traffic was flowing at normal speed. I wasn’t injured but was certainly startled and distracted for a moment to gauge what had just happened. The dealer is looking into it. Claims it could have been caused by a rock. That seems to defy the law of physics and the glass actually look like it bowed from the inside out as if too much pressure was being applied to the glass. Searches online seem to point to several class action lawsuits and plenty of reports of similar exploding sunroofs!
