- #11585007April 24, 2024AIR BAGS
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed and passing through an intersection, another vehicle involved in a high-speed chase failed to stop at a stop sign. As a result, the contact's vehicle was stuck on the front passenger side door, sending the vehicle careening to the shoulder of the roadway and coming to a complete stop after colliding with a parked vehicle. All air bags were deployed, excluding the driver's and passenger's side curtain air bags, which could have possibly prevented and/or lessened the severity of the injuries the contact sustained. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard, where it remained until the contact regained possession. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. A police report was filed, and injuries were reported. The contact was transported to an area hospital, where he received emergency surgery to repair three fractured vertebrates in his neck as well as contusions to his face, which required an extensive hospital stay. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and the vehicle was inspected; however, it was determined that no malfunction had occurred. The failure mileage was 100,000.

A couple of weeks ago my car seemed to be skipping when I started driving. I had no idea what could be wrong but some kind of intuition made me think to check the oil. I had the oil changed in December 2023 but had only driven about 1000 miles since then. I'm working from home so not driving alot. My oil was VERY low - it didn't even measure up to the first fill line. I started reading info online and realized that many Hyundai Sonata owners were reporting similar issues, so I went to an auto store bought a quart of oil and put that in. After testing, I got another quart of oil and put that in, finally bringing oil level to amount recommended by the lines on the oil stick. A couple days later I took my car to the local dealer, Tuscaloosa Hyundai. As soon as I started describing the problem, they immediately knew what was wrong - another sign that this problem is way too common. They performed some type of combustion chamber cleaning with oil and filter change and charged me $672. I drive a 2017 Hyundai Sonata Sport. When changing oil in December 2023, car had 60780 miles on it. The oil change personnel did say that the car seemed to be using too much oil, which may be why I thought to check it when the car was acting weird. When I took it to the dealer in April 2024, the car had 61816 miles on it. If I had not checked the oil, my engine could have been destroyed and I could have been left stranded on the side of the road. With so many other Hyundai owners claiming the same problem, I can't understand why this vehicle wasn't recalled so that the problem could be fixed, and/or that this problem which could have serious consequences wasn't covered by Hyundai. I am [XXX], don't drive far from home and drive very carefully. There should be no reason a car with 60000 miles on it is consuming oil at this rate. No warning lights were on in my car to indicate that I had an issue. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

- #11584666April 23, 2024ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
The contact owns a 2018 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving at approximately 70 MPH, the check engine warning illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle was losing forward momentum. The contact depressed the accelerator pedal but the vehicle was still losing forward momentum and then stalled. The contact stated that he was able to coast to the side of the road. The contact attempted to restart the vehicle but was unable after several attempts. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the engine needed to be replaced due to a hole in the valve. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

The engine failed. This created a risk for me and my family as it could have seized on us while driving and caused an accident. The problem was confirmed by the dealer in conjunction with the manufacturer. There were no warning lamps or messages on the dashboard. The only indicator of the issue was burning oil smell and engine shaking while driving. Additional details: The engine started burning a lot of oil close to the 10 year ownership mark around July 2023. We started putting oil into the engine about weekly, then daily around August and September. I finally took it into the dealership in October and they started an oil consumption study. From October 2023 through now in April 2024: 1. They changed the oil and we drove 1000 miles, then went back. 2. They changed the oil again and we drove 1000 miles again. 3. The third time, we went in and they charged me money to deep clean the engine and then asked me to drive the car for another 1000 miles yet again. 4. We made it about 500 miles and then took it back in after the car started shaking and making noises. Ultimately, Hyundai replaced the engine (they also charged me money) but I am concerned that other systems in the car will fail and I will continue to face safety issues and future charges as well.

On Feb 15th 2023 my daughter was driving my 2014 Hyundai Sonata at the posted speed limit of 55 MPH on a 2 lane blacktop when the car suddenly and without any warning at all, lost all power and became unresponsive while traveling with other vehicles behind her, in front of her and in the opposing lane of travel. Without enough of an improved shoulder to pull to the right and a steep embankment on that side of the roadway as well, she was forced to veer to the left with other cars approaching. She had minimal braking, steering and no response to depressing the accelerator pedal at all. She was able to direct the car onto a paved portion of a feeder road and finally got the car stopped. The cabin filled with smoke and there was smoke all around the car but no fire was ever found. These vehicles are dangerous to the public and have a known engine defect that because of this the manufacturer has implemented a software patch known as KSDS and with this recall in place should have allowed my daughter to reach a safer place than being stranding on the side of a busy hi-way. My car had this patch installed and I was assured that this recall would allow the car to be driven a safe distance and it would be obvious when this patch was active and the engine would be put in "Limp mode" This did not happen, the engine locked up

My son was driving the car, and completely out of nowhere it seized to have any compression and steering/accelerating became disabled. I have been given an estimate up to $7,000 for an engine rebuild due to this happening. I have reached out to Hyundai and they denied my claim due to car being out of warranty. This should have never happened when the car has been well maintained, even with the motor burning through oil faster than it should be, which I have always kept a close eye on. This car is defective and unsafe.
