The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while an acquaintance was driving the vehicle at an unknown speed, the vehicle made an abnormal banging sound and the engine seized. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed with engine seizure caused by rod bearing wear. The dealer determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V226000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). Additionally, the recall repair of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V312000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) was performed on the vehicle. The contact stated upon checking the engine oil level more than a year later, she noticed that there was fuel intrusion into the engine oil. The contact stated that an oil change was performed; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer, where the contact was informed that there was significant fuel intrusion in the oil, and the dealer determined that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened; however, no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was unknown.

Hello, My rear brake lights burn out frequently and the bulbs get so hot it deforms the plastic bulb holders and the light bulb falls out resulting in no brake lights. This has been happening for over 10 years. Hyundai has acknowledged the problem and sent a notice to repair it for free if the car is less than 15 years old or less than 200,000 mile. My Sonata has 210,000 miles and they will not repair the defect. I've replaced hundreds of bulbs and multiple bulb holders/wiring harnesses. My daughter has been pulled over multiple times and yelled at from other drivers because her brake lights do not work. The reason why these bulbs get so hot is because it receives to much voltage. Hyundai acknowledges this fact. My brake lights receive 13.4 volts instead of around 12. To much voltage gets them hot and burns them out quicker. It's a safety issue Hyundai acknowledges but wont repair. I guess I have no alternative but to keep replacing the bulbs.... This car is not ready for the scrap yard yet as it get a new engine from Hyundai because the original seized up from another Hyundai defect Do you have any recourse or advise on how to get Hyundai to repair it like they would if the car had 199,999 miles on it? Hyundai refused to budge on the matter. Any advice?

Engine oil consumption failure. My car would not even make it to the 3,000 mile oil change without the low oil warning light coming on. Brought it to D'Arcy Hyundai in Joliet, IL for the consumption test..after 1,000 miles my car was down 2 quarts! They then did a combustion chamber cleaning. This cleaning made it so my car lags as it's driving and wouldn't shift properly and before it even left the dealership, the starter went out. Brought it back and they claim that after 1,000 miles the oil reads FULL, not any oil used whatsoever-which isn't possible. They are now denying fixing the engine. I am furious and when I get stuck again due to the oil consumption issue, they will make me start all over again and it may not be covered due to being over the mileage shortly. (I have about 2,000 miles left of my warranty) My sister has a Kia and the same garbage was pulled with her vehicle! She also had issues after the combustion cleaning costing her a starter, battery and alternator. HYUNDAI and EVERY DEALERSHIP knows this issued exists and the recall should be made immediately without all of this garbage.

The check engine light began flashing so I shut the car off and had it towed to West Allis Hyundai. The service garage took the car for a test drive (even though the user manual states not to run the engine), and according to the dealer, the car engine "blew up" and stopped running. I assume the engine seized up. the engine only has 43,000 miles and should be covered by the 100,000, 10 year warranty that comes from the manufacturer. The car has been at the dealer for over a week without any definitive answer if the engine will be replaced by Hyundai under warranty. Also, the dealer has not provided a loaner car so I am without any transportation while my is in the shop. Note that since I've had the car all maintenance has been done by West Allis Hyundai.

I took in my 2016 Hyundai Sonata to Anaheim Hyundai in California for 60,000 mile service. The Sonata was having power steering issues where time to time the power steering would go out. I bought the extended warranty so it was cover under the warranty but Hyundai stop making these parts according to the dealership. I don't understand how Hyundai can stop making a power steering parts to Sonata models from 2016-2019 when there are so many on the road with potential power steering safety issues. I was told by the dealership there are so many issues with these Sonata's, the power steering parts are hard to find. They had no idea if they could get OEM parts or even find after market parts. I was originally told on [XXX] when we took the car in it would take 2 to 3 days now two and half weeks later they have changed their story to "not sure when they are going to get the part" I don't understand how this was not a recall from Hyundai similar to Hyundai Sonata recall in 2016 for Sonata's made in 2010-2011. It appears Hyundai has multiples models with power steering issues and yet they stop making the parts, why? I would like someone at NHTSA to review the power steering failures that may or may not be being reported by Hyundai dealerships. Just trying to get the car fixed since my son drives it. Thank you. Airbag light came on. Car is in otherwise perfect shape (red flag). Brought to Hyundai dealer. Was told it was a short somewhere on front passenger side. But it will cost $250 to figure out where. Then possibly over $1000 to fix it!! Upon researching it I found many complaints on same issue on otherwise normal good condition sonata’s. Clearly they used inferior components designed to fail. Similar to their stealable cars (with a USB cable) I’m sure you’re fermi liar with. They hid that until TIC TOK put out videos showing how to. They HAD TO fix it due to owners auto insurance going up (way up). I can’t afford to repair this pressing safety issue. Hyundai should be held responsible for using knowingly faulty parts in their air bag system then charging customer large $ just to make an otherwise perfectly running car safe to operate. Oh, then they said they’d offer me a “loaner” till fixed. But their “loner” costs $50 per day!! That’s a RENTAL not a loaner.

When driving to work the car stopped running in the middle of the highway. We had to pull off to the side of the road, turned off the car and when turning it back on the engine wouldn’t start. The EPS, low oil, check engine, battery, and low tire pressure lights were all on. I took the car to my mechanic and he said the engine seized due to the crankshaft breaking.

I had just taken my 2018 Hyundai Sonata through the brushless car wash at Marion Ford-Hyundai in Marion, Illinois. As I exited the car wash, I noticed that the engine light had come on. When I took the car out on the highway, it accelerated very slowly and would only reach a speed of about 50 miles per hour. I called the service department at the dealership about what had happened and they told me the knock sensor had shorted out and for safety to the engine, would only allow me to go about 50 miles per hour, and to drive it as little as possible until it was repaired. They said that they had several other Sonatas in the shop with the exact same problem. The car was, and still is, under warranty, so it was repaired for free. It took about a month for them to get to my car, due in part to the other Sonatas waiting for the same problem to be repaired. The second time it happened I was driving home and went through some water on the highway at about 55 miles per hour, and the engine light came on and the car instantly decelerated to about 45 miles per hour. Same problem. The dealer again repaired the car for free. My two biggest concerns are how much it's going to cost me to have the repair done after the car's warranty expires, and, more importantly, what if the problem occurs in fast city traffic, such as in Covington, KY, where you have to drive 80 mph to keep from being a traffic hazard, or some other similar situation, such as interstate highway travel. Rapid deceleration in fast traffic can be deadly, and I don't like the thought of being killed or stranded in the middle of nowhere due to a design flaw by Hyundai. Can't Hyundai be made to fix the problem at no cost to the vehicle owners, to make the cars safer? I hardly drive the car in the rain any more. By the way, I don't have the exact dates these incidents occurred, only that they were, the best I can remember, in 2022 and 2023.

the car keeps randomly dying (not during driving "yet") it happens at least once or twice a week of where i go to ride my car and it is completely dead, i have to unlock the door using the key fob manually and push the "Reset 12v battery button" inside the car. i have tried to have Hyundai service repair the issue or at least tell me what's wrong but no hope as they can never replicate the problem. I am seeing alot of users posting online on numerous web forms (reddit,facebook..etc) that they are having the same exact issue as me for the same exact model of my car, With also no help from the dealer on the matter. This must be a defect at some point and would greatly appreciate if NHTSA can help push this issue to the dealer
