Our 6.2L failed unexpectedly after regular maintenance. No warning, just the sound of knocking in the engine then loss of power and bad sounds from the engine. Stranded on side of road. GM wants to replace the entire engine without opening engine, claiming lower engine damage. Technicians say this is spun rod bearing problem that is very common. Dangerous and poor quality.

Engine failed on highway in a different state, was able to drive home but barely made it. 2 newborns, 2 toddlers, and 2 adults were all in the vehicle at the time the engine started squealing. No warning signs. Dealer dropped oil filter and it was full of metal. Official diagnosis was main crank thrust bearing failure. Rebuilt engine was installed under powertrain warranty (37500 miles). GM did not put us in a comparable rental vehicle, so I had to pay out of pocket expenses outside of their rental allowance for a compact car. Dealer charged for an oil change. Dealer changed the rebuilt engine warranty terms upon pickup from 3yr/100,000miles to 12mo/12,000 miles or the current terms of power train warranty, whichever was longer. GM is well aware of this issue and is keeping it quiet. Rebuilt engines are on back order for months because it’s that common of a failure.

As we were driving down a main road and taking off from a stop light on NW Expressway we had no warning before the car seemed to die and shift itself to N. It said to press the start button, that did nothing and the car would not power back up besides the lights and dash that were still working. We coasted to a stop in a neighborhood entrance. I'm so thankful I was not on the highway during rush hour traffic. Once stopped, we put it in park and tried to start it. A friend came and tried to jump it and still nothing. The dealership has confirmed it needs a full engine replacement. GM has agreed to help with cost but my car has sat inoperable for over 30 days as the engine is on back order with no ETA. It has a 6.2L engine and I had taken it in for pull consumption tests over the past 2 years. The dealerships were unable to duplicate the problem. Two days prior to the failure I had told my husband it was slow to crank and we needed to have the battery checked. I now believe it was the engine, not the battery. There were no warning lights on and my battery indicter showed to be in the middle (not lacking charge). I am aware of a voluntary customer satisfaction program that GM has issued but they have told me my VIN isn't one of the 5000 affected by this. In visiting with the dealership it appears they will not fully break down my engine until the new one has arrived but they are 90% sure of the cause as they've "seen several of these". This could have been catastrophic to have a car die with warning in traffic.

During the operation of my 2023 GMC Yukon XL AT4 on [XXX], carbon monoxide (CO) entered the cabin, exposing my children and me to dangerously high levels of CO and causing confirmed carbon monoxide poisoning. We were driving with the engine running and the heater on for approximately 21 minutes when the exposure occurred. Symptoms began to escalate that day and into the proceeding days, including severe headache, stomachache, pallor, chest pressure, shortness of breath, fatigue, and neurological issues. My children, particularly my [XXX] and [XXX] , experienced the most severe effects— both were very ill especially my [XXX] . Unfortunately, we initially did not believe it was possible for CO to enter the vehicle cabin, which delayed early intervention and appropriate medical care. Blood testing 4 days later confirmed elevated carboxyhemoglobin levels in my [XXX] , the only one tested. During the incident, the battery warning light was the first indication of trouble, but soon after, many additional error messages began flashing on the dashboard. The vehicle then overheated, decelerated, and eventually shut down while driving. We were in the vehicle under 21 minutes. Upon inspection after the incident, my husband noted a severed belt and potential pulley issues. The exact cause of the CO intrusion has not yet been identified. The vehicle is available for inspection and unaltered to preserve evidence. I am writing GMC and requesting further investigation by GMC. This incident reflects a severe safety issue with potentially life-threatening implications for GMC owners. CO exposure can cause significant harm, and delayed identification in this case placed my family at substantial risk. Immediate investigation and corrective action are essential to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. Time is critical, as this defect could have catastrophic consequences for other unsuspecting drivers and their families. - #11633323December 31, 2024SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
The contact owns a 2023 GMC Yukon XL. The contact stated that while driving 75 MPH coming to an intersection and attempting to apply the brakes, the vehicle failed to stop as needed. The message brake system failure and speed limited to 62 MPH were displayed on the instrument panel. The vehicle continued and drove through the intersection. The parking brake failed to stop the vehicle. The vehicle ended up stopping in a ditch and was towed to the dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the battery terminal had detached, causing 20 different modules to fail. The battery cable was tightened. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and opened a case for a possible buyback. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was 25,100.

Engine failure of lifters and piston rings at 58000 miles. Engine failure at highway speeds causing complete loss of power on highway. It is completely unacceptable to have such catastrophic engine failure on such a new vehicle.

GMC currently has bulletin out on the issue and how to fix it. unfortunately this doesn't not fix it and I am going to have to replace my whole rear differential at only 60,500 miles. Gmc is well aware of the situation and has not done a recall. The fix the bulletin proposes would not work and there was over and inch of metal shaving found. This is a huge issue in the specific vehicle and the part to replace the rear differential isn't even available (national backorder with no ETA) leaving customers without a vehicle or solution for their faulty issues. GMC should be liable for their negligence and putting customers in potential harm if the vehicle is continued to be driven with a failing rear differential. The vehicle did not prompt any warning messages but the grinding sound was very loud. Bulletin No.: 21-NA-028 Date: January, 2023

- #11627157November 25, 2024UNKNOWN OR OTHER, LANE DEPARTURE: BLIND SPOT DETECTION
The onstar system failed and will not work. This affects the ability to make emergency calls, report/determine our vehicle’s location, the vehicle’s navigation system, and some of the blind spot monitors are also affected, though intermittently. The issue first happened two days after the dealer fixed a recall with the serial data gateway module. We called onstar and they were able to resend a signal and it was fixed temporarily. Two days later it happened again and the amount of electronics affected in the vehicle is astounding. We called onstar again and went through all the troubleshooting and they say they can’t fix it, it’s a dealer problem now and the module needs to be replaced. The dealer states this is a common problem but will not cover it under warranty. In the beginning there was no immediate indication that systems had failed other than certain electronics not working. However after a couple weeks there is now a check engine light associated with all the electronics that are failing due to this defective telecom module. In a 2 year old vehicle, this is highly frustrating and poses safety concerns for my family.

Our 2021 GMC Yukon XL for the third time now has shifted from Drive to Neutral and then turned off on us on the highway. The first time GM changed the motor (at approximately 35,000 miles), the second time was about a month ago we were at the White Mountains and it shut off on a highway, the third time was yesterday [XXX] (with 61,057 miles), my wife and I were driving on [XXX] in Massachusetts and when I accelerated the vehicle shifted from Drive to Neutral and then shut off on me. This vehicle is not safe and on all of these three occasions I have been lucky not to be hit and have been the driver. I am a trained and professional driver and I must state that this vehicle is not safe at all. I need to find a solution to this with General Motors. Complete engine failure while operating the vehicle with our children riding along as passengers. The engine failure nearly caused us to wreck. 2023 GMC Yukon XL Denali with only 15,000 miles. And now, I am being told that I need a complete engine replacement and that GMC is well aware of these engine failures and the product defects, yet GMC has refused to issue a recall. To add insult to injury, I’m being told by dealership that it may take several months to get a new engine! We will be pursuing legal action.

2022 Yukon XL, (49465 miles) while driving in stop and go traffic, engine quit, able to roll off roadway, restart engine and get back in "drive", this occurred three times in succession when we took foot off accelerator, with in 50 minutes (45 min) time line. This occurred on 9/29/24 took vehicle to dealership on 10/14/24 (earliest appointment), they completed two recalls, could not fined any thing wrong and no "codes" were showing. Engine seemed to "shutter" not like a electrical was disconnected to engine (my opinion). This a safety issue and should be addressed! What is going to happen when this occurs when pulling out in traffic or passing a vehicle? Fatal crash????

One hour into a trip from Reno to Bay Area at 18k miles on my car the vehicle lost power while driving on the highway. It went into neutral and display said to hit start which yielded a warning that ability to shift was no optimal. Preceding the shut down I lost acceleration power. I was able to exit highway and coast off to the side of an exit road where it came to a stop and shifted to park in the middle of the road. Had it been one mile up the highway I would have hit another incline and the car would have stopped on a major two lane interstate. Ultimately towed back to dealer in Reno where I was informed my engine seized and needed to be replaced.

- #11614159September 12, 2024ENGINE, VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL, STEERING
Driving in my newer GM Yukon Ultimate at 13k miles on the freeway. Vehicle with no warning shuts down while going 60mph in the middle lane. Was able to safely steer the car to the side of the road to avoid a collision. Vehicle lost all electrical contact. could not shift into neutral to tow. Turns out vehicle engine had to be replaced. GM approved a new engine replacement and are planning to return the vehicle back to put on the road. The vehicle is unsafe, at 5k miles, 6 months prior, the vehicle had to have the steering system replaced due to failure as well. Online research shows that others are having the same issue with failed engines on these GM vehicles and models.

The contact owns a 2021 GMC Yukon XL. The contact stated while attempting to start the vehicle, the vehicle failed to start up. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump power control module was inoperable. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact believed that the failure was associated with NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V739000 (Fuel System, Gasoline); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 63,000.

The chest clip button is not difficult to open. The chest clip is a button on this carseat instead of a buckle. My child, who will be 2 years old this month, has been able to unbuckle the chest clip for months now. I am concerned if an accident occurs and the chest clip is unbuckled, he will get seriously injured.

At approximately 9,000 miles the engine started knocking. I took it to the dealer today and they called to confirm the engine and radiator needed to be replaced as there are metal shavings in the oil. I'm not sure if it is the 6.2L engine lifter issue or if this is something different, nonetheless, engine issues for GMC seem to be systemic based on quick research and seeing posts in forums and social media.

On [XXX] I brought my vehicle to Rivard Buick GMC with a squeaking noise that was check and attempted to be repair four times at the same location. They provided a quote for $2,309.10 stating it was the Master Cylinder. Rick the Services director said it was not cover under warranty and it need it to be cover by me, at that point I explain to him the vehicle has been in and out of his services department for the same issue since it had 20,000 miles. 1st time-They replaced the front brake pad stating GM had a defect on them (Noise went away for a few thousand miles) 2nd time- They apply conditioner to the brake and lubricant so they say (noise went away for a few thousand miles) 3rd time- They said it was not the front brakes anymore making the noise. They said warranty did not cover rear brakes due to GM not flagging it as defected pad. I complained the noise was coming from the front of the vehicle but they insisted it was the rear so I paid $500 plus to get the rear brakes at 60% life left on them. At the time of picking up the vehicle after repair completed the noise came back within a few miles from the dealer. I returned to the dealer and spoke with the Services Manager Troy, he apologized for the inconvenience and said they will take care the front brake at no cost to me, however they submitted a claim to GM to get the work done and kept my money when they misdiagnosed the issue. 4th time- Noise comes back at this point the warranty it's expired and they tell me it's the master cylinder the actual issue. When I talked to Rick, he said that GM was willing to pay for half of the work and the other half it's my responsibility. On [XXX], my wife and three kids almost hit a wall while trying to stop and the braked did not work. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

As we were leaving Cortez, CO. on a two lane highway we were passing a couple of cars with plenty of room to get back into to the driving lane when we lost ALL power from the engine. The cars we had just passed had to slam on their brakes as we were trying to keep from a head on collision. But with no power and the Denali in neutral we couldn’t change anything. We coasted to a County Road approach and it DIED in the middle of it. NO POWER. We had to call a tow truck who took it back into Cortez to Webb Chevrolet. The engine had seized. God was watching over us that day. We have since found out that there has been MANY seized engines with the 2022, 6.2 liter engines. In many new pickups and few of the suburbans. In fact, the Webb Chevrolet people said they have had one that they replaced the seized engine with a new 6.2 liter engine and in 500 miles that NEW ENGINE ALSO SEIZED! This is a MAJOR SAFTEY ISSUE!! THIS ENGINE NEEDS TO BE RECALLED BEFORE IT RUINS LIVES OF THE FAMILIES WHO ARE DRIVING THEM!!. We only had 42,000 miles on our 2022 Yukon Denali and Chevrolet couldn’t even rent a vehicle to get home and it would be a month to have to wait for a new one. We had to trade vehicles to get home. Point is, when the engine seizes while passing cars on a two lane, somebody is going to die. Families aren’t at fault when the company has been notified of their negligence to get a recall on this engine and fixed. We’ve had our Denali in for service several times for electrical issues. This should qualify as a Lemon Law. Instead, GMC tried to send a $5000.00 voucher to use when we buy a new vehicle. This family has bought GMC, CADILAC’S, CHEVY’S FOR OVER 50 years. We like our salesman and would continue this business, but not if you don’t make SAFETY FIRST!! RECALL THIS ENGINE NOW!!! Take care of YOUR customers and OUR friends! LOOK FOR YOURSELF THE AMOUNT OF SEIZED ENGINES IN THIS 6.2LITER ENGINE. Thank You, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA)
