On December 28 the tailgate on my Volvo 2025 xc60 PHEV began to open and close randomly while it was not running, parked in my garage and and plugged in. I unplugged the car from the charger, firmly closed the tailgate and went back in side my house. I checked on the car several minutes later to find the tail gate open again. I again firmly closed the tail gate and this time ensured that I locked the car with the button on the key fob. 10 minutes later the tailgate was open again, while the car was parked, turned off and not plugged in. After closing the tailgate again, I now locked the car via the app. When I checked again in 15 minutes the car was unlocked, but the tailgate was still closed. All of these incidents happened between 8 am and 9:45am. I was able to take video and still pictures of the incidents. Several weeks ago, I was driving and noticed that my tailgate was open. I had recently left a shopping center so I figured I had some how not closed the tailgate properly. This would be the first time I ever made such a mistake. I pulled over, closed the tailgate and continued on. I now wonder if this was a similar problem. Safety risks include injury to people from the tailgate itself and risk of loss and damage to items in the vehicle and the vehicle itself. This is an additional incident of a previously reported issue with the electrical system of this vehicle.

I decided to clean off my windshield with the windshield wiper spray and wipers and noticed my windshield would not turn on at all. I heard no noise from the motor coming on nothing happened when I attempted to turn them on. I knew rain was coming in the next few days so I was worried I was going to have visibility issues. Contacted the dealer who stated they had no loaner available. I had to drive in the rain with no windshield wipers. When I finally dropped my vehicle off to get serviced and explained the issue, the tech explained this has been a common with issue with many people especially because of the snow, he states “people keep turning the wipers on with snow on the windshield.” He also said his 6 month old Volvo had the same issue. However, I have never turned my windshield wipers on after snow without removing the snow off first so this was not the case. With multiple issues with different people, the tech issue’s with his own 6 month old car it sounded like a recall issue to me. I was told the motor had burned out on my 2024 Volvo XC60 that I have had for just under 2 years and it was no longer under warranty because I was 1,000 miles over my warranty. No error messages appeared on my screen to let me know there were any issues with my windshield wipers at all. This is a huge safety issue, i was not made aware there was an issue if the rain began after I was driving I could’ve been in accident hurt myself or/and others. I know there is a recall for Volvo trucks for windshield wiper motors.

Car is 16 months old and a plug in hybrid. After replacement of the 12 volt battery, the on board charger, and the wiring harness due to complete system failure, I picked up the car from service. Within an hour of having the car back, the dashboard suddenly went blank while I was driving. There was no warning or notice. This presented a safety issue as I was using GPS and relying on directions at the time. I pulled over and turned off the car and tried to “reset” the dashboard and was unable to do so after several tries. I returned the car to the dealership where they were unable to immediately fix it.

Serpentine belt failure at 70K miles. Was driving back home when I felt the traction misbehaving and the check engine light came on. Was able to get home safely and brought the car to the garage the next open day. During inspection, serpentine belt was found missing 1 rib and was caught in splash fan. Had to pay almost $1000 to replace it as insurance had run out a couple months prior. Volvo tech said it was almost surely a defect in the belt as these last typically ~150k miles and they had seen other such recent cases of early failure. I was not happy having to pay to replace a defective part which moreover was about to catastrophically fail, destroying my engine/traction and potentially hurting me. Thankfully the check engine light, which was apparently unrelated (oxygen sensor which needed to be replaced for another $1000) brought me to the garage before the accident happened.

On Wednesday December 3, 2025 the front windshield wipers stopped working on my wife's 2023 Volvo XC60. The stalk to control the wipers was operating as normal. It was able to spray the windshield wiper fluid and operate the rear window wiper as expected. This happened that day that we received unexpected lake effect snow in our area. We immediately scheduled an appointment at dealership we purchased the vehicle from and dropped it off on Friday December 5, 2025. A few moments ago we received a call from the service department that there is an internal service bulletin regarding this issue. They explained that there is a process where they have to go back and forth with Volvo to diagnose the issue. They could not estimate when the issue would be resolved or what was the cause. The dealership was out of loaners, so they gave us an option to either wait or drive the vehicle and hope we don't get caught in bad weather until they can identify what is wrong with the wipers. This puts us in a very unsafe vehicle with no recourse. The safety of my wife, myself, and our child are put at risk because of this issue. There was a message that stated that the wipers failed initially on 12-3-2025, but that message never appeared again. This in itself is a safety issue. What if someone was renting the same vehicle when this occurred. The rental car company wouldn't know and they could rent the vehicle to a drive who wouldn't know.

- #11703102December 4, 2025ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, LANE DEPARTURE: BLIND SPOT DETECTION
My wife and I purchased this vehicle brand new from the dealer in Feb 2025. To date, we barely have 4,000 miles on the car. Since owning the car, we have experienced at least 5-6 incidents that the vehicle’s computer system fails to operate. When this occurs, there is no sound from any devices. The entertainment system works, but no sound, the blinkers work but no sound. More important, the car heat/cooling systems don’t operate, the light indicating cars are in your blind spots do not operate. We brought our vehicle back to our local dealership each time. In September, the dealer reached out to Volvo to have the computer “brain” replaced. They had the car for three days only to be told Volvo denied the replacement because what is occurring is a known issue and an update release was coming in November to fix the issue. November came and went and still no update. We spoke to the dealership and they had no idea. They recommended us contacting Volvo directly. We reached out to express our frustration and was told someone would get back in a few days. About a week later, we received an email from Volvo expressing their sorrows for our inconvenience and to open a case with our dealership. I was extremely disappointed as I responded indicating that’s what we have done time and time again and there’s nothing they can do. It’s a known error and the only way to reset to have the car parked and hold the menu select button. It takes about 3 minutes or so for the system to reboot. The last time this occurred we were driving home and the system shut off. This left us without heat and no safety features. Volvo is clearly aware of the issue and it appears there’s no urgency to get this resolved. We paid a lot of money to purchase this vehicle and it’s been a big disappointment We are looking for some assistance

The rear tailgate has a feature that allows a driver to open it by waving their foot underneath the bumper in case their hands are full. The system will also unsafely cause the door to close if a person places their foot too close when loading cargo. This has twice lowered the door on my head. The most recent time causing bleeding when the latch struck my scalp. This feature should only be used to open the gate, not close it.

- #11700555November 20, 2025FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: WARNINGS, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
When arriving at the high school parking lot to pick our grandson up from band practice, we experienced Sudden Unintended Acceleration of our vehicle as we attempted to pull into a parking spot. This resulted in a collision with another vehicle that had backed into the parking space in front of us. That driver was inside her vehicle and claimed injuries. As you can imagine we were pulling into the space at a very slow rate of speed when all of a sudden the car lunged forward at a high rate of speed, jumped two parking lot cement barriers and slammed into the rear of her vehicle. The car is equipped with all the latest collision avoidance equipment, but did not stop before hitting the other vehicle ... and no automatic warning sounds went off that I am aware of. A police report was filed and a tow truck had to be called to tow the vehicle. The vehicle had less than 5,ooo miles on it and had only been owned by us for 4 months (it was new when we purchased it). The accident happened on August 27, 2025 and we did not get our vehicle back from the body shop until Monday, November 17. Not only was our safety at risk, but the other driver and several students in the parking lot at the time. This incident could have been so much worse, or could have ended in a fatality. Volvo did an inspection of the vehicle, but the results were inconclusive and our insurance company paid the claim. As soon as we got our vehicle back we took it to our local Volvo service manager to have him check it over. He has indicated the car is safe to drive ... but I am very nervous about driving the vehicle now. The cost to repair the vehicle was $14,145. I was not distracted at the time of the accident and I am certain that I did not hit the accelerator pedal. NOTE: I never received a copy of the accident report, but I believe our insurance company has a copy.

- #11700070November 18, 2025SERVICE BRAKES
Brakes sometimes do not engage when parked and putting the car into drive or reverse gears. The car performs automatic brake checks when the car is parked. Sometimes, if I happen to press the brake pedal as one of these checks is starting, the brake pedal doesn’t press down all the way. I can still start the car though and put it into drive or reverse while pressing the brake pedal until it stops, though the pedal only depresses partway. Once the car is in drive or reverse, it rolls 1-2 feet, with my foot still pressing the brake pedal, before the brake actually engages. This has happened twice in the past 3 weeks. I am using the latest Volvo car software.

- #11695645October 26, 2025LANE DEPARTURE: BLIND SPOT DETECTION, BACK OVER PREVENTION: REARVIEW SYSTEM BRAKING, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING
Manufacturer: Volvo Car USA LLC | Initial Failure Mileage: 15,000 DEFECT DESCRIPTION: The Google built-in Infotainment Control Unit (ICU) and Audio Control Module (ACM) are repeatedly crashing/malfunctioning while driving. This system failure is a safety hazard because it simultaneously disables critical features: * SAFETY SYSTEM FAILURE: The Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) is disabled, creating a high risk of collision when reversing. * LOSS OF AUDITORY WARNINGS: All essential auditory cues, including the turn signal click and parking sensor sounds, are lost as the speakers go silent. * Distraction: The screen goes black/unresponsive, requiring a dangerous manual reboot while driving. REPAIR HISTORY: The defect has been confirmed and documented by an authorized Volvo dealer (O'Steen Volvo) on two prior warranty attempts (6/18/24 & 12/19/24) but remains uncorrected. The dealer has admitted they have "no way to fix this" permanently. Corporate (Volvo Customer Care) has been notified. This is a recurring, safety-critical manufacturing defect. Most recent issue was 10/25/205

- #11695573October 25, 2025BACK OVER PREVENTION: WARNINGS, BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA
I purchased my 2022 Volvo XC60 in April 2025. I had no problems with the backup camera, until I installed a new version of software, 3.7, over the air, in September. The update was described as addressing a recall, for a safety issue where the backup camera would sometimes not work. Since the recall update, I've had issues with the backup camera not working, at the same time all of the cameras, proximity warnings, and rear emergency braking do not work. Far from this software update fixing a safety concern, it appears to have created one. The only answer I could get from the Volvo USA help line was to "take it to a dealer". I thought they would be more concerned given that they have just carried out a recall action that has created a safety issue!

There has been at least 5 incidences where the audio stopped working for the turn signals, navigation stopped, radio stopped and air conditioning stopped. The first 2-3 times the system reset itself. The 4th incident I was driving in torrential rain, the wiper auto sensor stopped and every warning light on the dashboard lit up. As the rain dissipated, the system seemed to clear itself. Today, on my way to the dealership, the turn signal audio stopped, navigation stopped, radio stopped. The service advisor verified the situation. His response, per Volvo instructions, tell the customer to reset the system once a month. There's no written instructions to resolve the problem. The service advisor admitted this is an ongoing problem and corporate is making no attempt to resolve it. Is Volvo waiting for a life threatening situation before addressing the problem. I can't rely upon the computer system to function properly. Volvo has a responsibility to its car owners for supposedly being one of the safest cars on the road. This vehicle is becoming unreliable. Thank you.

Driving the car at under 20 mph making a left turn into my cul-de-sac which has an upward slope. Car system thought it would crash into the tree straight ahead and started emergency braking making loud noise and then the steering wheels locked. Ended up hitting the parked car in front of neighbors house due to brake and steering malfunction. Heard from other Volvo owners that this has been a problem. Even backing out of garage where there is no object behind the car the car emergency braking system engages causing whiplash. No longer feel safe driving this car.

- #11694242October 18, 2025ENGINE, VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL, FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
While driving on crowded I40 near Statesville NC, the engine started to stutter and moments later quit entirely. Fortunately we were able to move to the shoulder with only a few seconds to spare. This was very dangerous as we had to move through the right lane in front of speeding semi trucks. The only warning light received was that there was an engine problem, that the car would go into “safe” mode. This was mere seconds before entirely disabling the engine. Had we come to a halt on the highway there would have been a serious accident and injury to ourselves and most likely others. We contacted Volvo, a tow was dispatched and the car was winched on to a flat bed trailer and we were transported to a dealer in Hickory. Later it was confirmed that the Integrated Starter General (ISG) had failed and that power had been interrupted to the hybrid battery. There is a serious problem here and I suspect may impact other “mild hybrid” systems that install integrated alternator/starter motor systems between the engine and transmission.

- #11689941September 26, 2025VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
Issue: Sudden, unexpected acceleration when in reverse. Details At about 10:15 am PDT on Saturday September 20th, 2025. My 2025 Volvo XC 60 car was in Pure mode with Creep mode toggled off. I put the car into reverse with the intent to back up 6-8ft. I lightly depressed the accelerator and the car lurched/accelerated backwards at a high rate of speed. I stopped the car by braking, and it is possible the Volvo automatic braking also engaged. I parked the car. When I came back to the car, in order to back out of the space safely, I engaged/toggled the creep mode on. The creep mode allowed me to keep my foot on the brake while backing up just it case the car rapidly accelerated again. I have asked the Volvo dealer for the EDR, but I have been told they are not allowed to provide this information. This was frightening and dangerous situation and I am fortunate no one was in the vicinity.

The contact owns a 2021 Volvo XC60. The contact stated that while driving at undisclosed speeds and turning, the front end of the vehicle made an abnormal grinding sound. Additionally, the contact stated that the steering wheel seized after turning, which required the contact to jam the steering wheel for the steering wheel to return to the center. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the steering rack had failed internally and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V001000 (Steering); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 45,000.
