Why This Program Exists
Due to a global semiconductor shortage impacting specific microchips, many 2022-2024 Toyota and Lexus vehicles were delivered to customers with only one Smart Key and a single mechanical key since October 2022. The Toyota second smart key program aims to rectify this by providing the missing second Smart Key.
What's Being Done
Toyota is implementing the Second Key Delivery Program (23TJ01) to provide affected owners with an additional Smart Key. Any authorized Toyota dealer will duplicate and provide one additional Smart Key FREE OF CHARGE. Toyota has secured sufficient parts to begin a phased rollout of this remedy.
How to Check if Your Vehicle is Eligible
Eligibility for the Second Key Delivery Program will be determined via a TIS/SLP VIN lookup. Your vehicle will appear as eligible if it is involved in a phase for which the remedy is currently available. The program is being rolled out in phases, and the timing of each phase's announcement will dictate when your vehicle becomes eligible.
What Owners Need to Do
When notified, customers will need to schedule an appointment with an authorized Toyota dealer. To receive your second Smart Key, you must bring your vehicle and the original Smart Key to the appointment. The original key is required to program the new Smart Key to your vehicle. The key pairing process is estimated to take about 45 minutes, though the overall appointment duration may vary based on the dealer's schedule. This Toyota second smart key program is designed to be as convenient as possible for owners.
Important Things to Know
- Not a Warranty Item: The delivery of the second Smart Key is not considered part of Toyota's New Vehicle Limited Warranty. It is simply the fulfillment of the second Smart Key included in the vehicle's purchase, which was unavailable at the time of delivery due to the chip shortage.
- Multi-Information Display (MID) Message: If a new Smart Key is registered to your vehicle, a message may display on the Multi-Information Display (MID) for up to 10 days. This is normal and intended to notify the owner that a new key has been registered, helping to prevent unauthorized registrations.
- Lost Original Key or Urgent Need: If you have lost your only Smart Key or have an urgent need for a second key but are not yet eligible for the program, dealers may provide a second key as a goodwill gesture. For other extenuating circumstances, contact the Toyota Brand Engagement Center for assistance.
Key Types and Shortage Timeline
Toyota uses different types of Smart Keys, specifically Type #2 (15CY) and Type #3/#4 (19CY) Smart Keys. These types have different designs and utilize different semiconductors. The varying supply of these semiconductors has led to different timelines for their availability. Toyota estimates that all models will return to production with two Smart Keys by July 2024.
Customer Notification and Contacting Toyota
Toyota plans to notify affected customers by first-class mail when their second Smart Key becomes available. Notifications will occur in phases, approximately one week after each phase's announcement. Toyota obtains mailing information from state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) records, so ensure your registration details are correct.
