2024 BMW X5/XM Check Engine Light IHKA Software TSB

BMW has released Service Information Bulletin SI B64 03 25 (Revision 3, dated March 10, 2025) to address a software-related issue affecting certain 2024 BMW X5 and XM vehicles. This bulletin supersedes the previous version of SI B64 03 25 dated February 28, 2025. Owners may notice a "Check Engine Light" illuminated on their dashboard, accompanied by a check control message indicating "bring in for service". This condition is caused by missing message fault codes stored in the Integrated Automatic Heating/Air Conditioning System (IHKA) control unit.

Symptoms

Owners of affected 2024 BMW X5 and XM models may observe the following:

• The "Check Engine Light" is illuminated.
• A check control message stating "bring in for service" appears.
• The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is active.

Despite these warnings, BMW notes that the faults themselves and the illuminated Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) have no functional effect on the vehicle's operation.

Fault Codes / DTCs

Multiple missing message fault codes may be stored in the IHKA control unit, including:

Cause

The root cause of this issue is identified as software within the IHKA control module. On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) requires continuous monitoring of communication between multiple battery cooling control modules and the engine control module. If this communication is interrupted, it can trigger the "Check Engine Light".

Important Warnings

• Do not replace parts: "Part exchange of the IHKA control unit does not provide a solution." The issue is software-based, not a hardware failure.
• Remote Software Update (RSU) coming: A Remote Software Update (RSU) with I-Level 24-11-574 is scheduled for release to affected vehicles on Monday, March 17, 2025. Once available, customers will be able to correct the issue on their own.
• Battery Charger Required: When performing programming, "Always connect a BMW-approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10)" to maintain stable voltage.
• Backup I-Level: "Currently there is an Execution Break and the backup I-Level needs to be used S18A-24-11-570." This backup I-Level contains the necessary software improvements for the IHKA.

Repair Procedure Summary

The correction involves programming and encoding the IHKA control module with updated software. Technicians will follow these general steps:

1. Determine Current I-Level: The vehicle's current integration level (I-Level) must be determined using either AIR or the Key Reader ISPA Next/AWP (Aftersales Workplace) applications.
2. Check I-Level: If the current I-Level is lower than the target integration level S18A-25-03-530 (or the backup I-Level S18A-24-11-570), proceed with programming. If not, further diagnosis with ISTA is required.
3. Program Vehicle: The vehicle must be programmed using ISTA 4.52.15 or higher, which was released on February 21, 2025. This update will ensure the missing message faults no longer appear.

After programming is complete, the functionality of the system should be checked. ISTA will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.

• ISTA 4.52.15 or a newer version of the diagnostic software.
• A BMW-approved battery charger/power supply, as referenced in SI B04 23 10.
