BMW has released Service Information Bulletin (SIB) 65 09 24 to implement crucial quality improvements and robustness measures through a software update for certain 2023-2024 BMW X1 and X2 models. This update aims to enhance various vehicle functions and overall performance. Owners searching for a solution to these issues may find this BMW X1 X2 programming update relevant.
This service action, identified as SIB 65 09 24, applies to U10 (X2 Sports Activity Coupe) vehicles produced from October 18, 2023, to March 15, 2024, and U11 (X1 Sports Activity Vehicle) models manufactured between July 19, 2023, and March 19, 2024.
Symptoms
Owners of affected vehicles may experience one or more of the following issues, which this software update is designed to address:
- Bluetooth malfunctions, leading to connectivity problems.
- A slow start-up phase for the Head Unit (HU), resulting in delayed operating system readiness.
- Frequent disconnections from Apple CarPlay.
- Issues with vehicle access and the drive-ready state.
- An AC charging abort error, preventing successful charging.
- Remote Control Parking without function.
Cause
The root cause of these issues is identified as unfavorable software installed in the vehicle. The BMW X1 X2 programming update corrects this underlying software deficiency.
Repair Procedure Summary
The correction involves programming the complete vehicle to update its software. Technicians will follow a specific procedure:
- Determine the vehicle's current I-level using applications like AIR or AWP (Aftersales Workplace).
- Program the vehicle to I-level U006-24-03-540 or higher. This programming must be done using ISTA 4.46.4x (released April 4, 2024) or a newer version.
- Connect a BMW-approved battery charger/power supply to the vehicle, as outlined in SIB 04 23 10, to maintain stable voltage during the process.
- Connect the programming system (ISTA 4) to the vehicle.
- The technician will determine and accept the measures plan for the update.
- The programming and encoding of the relevant control units will be carried out according to the measures plan, ensuring all units are enabled.
- Any items on the rework list must be followed to complete the service action.
- Depending on the rework list, a vehicle test will be performed, and the fault memory will be deleted if necessary.
- After the programming is complete, the functionality of the system will be thoroughly checked. This comprehensive BMW X1 X2 programming ensures all control units are updated to the latest software.
Required Tools and Software
To perform this service action, technicians must use ISTA 4.46.4x (or higher) for programming. It is also mandatory to connect a BMW-approved battery charger/power supply, as specified in SIB 04 23 10, to ensure stable voltage throughout the programming process.
Important Warnings for Owners
- This repair is designated as "THIS REPAIR IS MOBILE FRIENDLY," meaning it may be eligible for performance via Mobile Assistance for qualifying centers.
- ISTA will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.
- During a workshop visit, if your vehicle has multiple open programming and encoding Technical Campaign repairs, only one programming and encoding procedure may be invoiced at a time.
- Technicians are instructed to select one open Technical Campaign, such as 00 00 006, 00 00 556, 61 21 528, or 61 00 730, to update the vehicle to the required I-level or higher.
- Any additional before and/or after work, including attaching labels, as required by other open campaigns on the vehicle, must also be performed.
Claim and Warranty Information
Reimbursement for this Service Action is processed via normal claim entry. The repair code for this action is 0065740400, described as "U10 U11 Program control units (quality measures)." Specific flat rate labor operation codes apply:
- Labor Operation 00 76 590: Programming and encoding the vehicle control units, including a vehicle test (00 00 556/61 21 528). This applies if the repair is completed before the first vehicle delivery or if the vehicle is already in the workshop, with an allowance of 8 FRU.
- Labor Operation 00 76 591: Programming and encoding performed in conjunction with another campaign/repair, where the vehicle is already at the specified Target integration level or higher (no repair is necessary). This has an allowance of 1 FRU.
- Labor Operation 00 76 074: Programming and encoding the vehicle control units, including a vehicle test (00 00 006/61 21 528). This applies if the vehicle arrives at the service center and this Service Action is open, with no other main work performed, with an allowance of 9 FRU.
- Labor Operation 00 76 075: Programming and encoding the vehicle, with an allowance of 1 FRU.
Only one flat rate labor operation code can be used for claim submission. If control modules fail during reprogramming, consequential repair work, including IRAP Control Unit Recovery, can be claimed under this bulletin's Repair Code. Refer to SIB B01 01 20 or B01 07 20 for guidance on documenting diagnostic work time.
