Understanding Audi Brake Squeal Frequency

Brake squeal is the most common type of brake noise reported by customers. Audi emphasizes that brake squeal is a normal result of multiple factors interacting within the brake system and is not considered a defect. This bulletin aims to help technicians identify the exact frequency of the brake squeal.

Knowing the precise frequency allows Audi of America to better understand the issue. This data can aid in finding feasible solutions, such as developing new pad materials, different pad geometry, new backing plates, or revised spring designs.

How Technicians Analyze Audi Brake Squeal Frequency

To diagnose the specific Audi brake squeal frequency, technicians are instructed to use the Audi Frequency Analysis App. This application is available for both Apple and Android devices.

App Download and Setup:

1. Download the Audi Frequency Analysis App from the respective app stores:

2. If an iPhone displays an "Untrusted Enterprise Developer" error message after clicking on the app, technicians must navigate to Phone Settings >> General >> Profiles & Device Management >> Enterprise APP >> Audi AG and then select Trust Audi AG.

Recording and Analysis Procedure:

1. Once the app is open, technicians select "Record" (Aufnehmen) to begin the frequency analysis. The app also offers functions to Play (Abspielen), Cut (Schneiden), and Export (Exportiernen) recordings.
2. The brake squeal can be recorded from either inside or outside the vehicle, depending on the conditions that best reproduce the noise.
3. The app displays a frequency graph, allowing technicians to identify the main frequency causing the brake squeal. It's important to note that surrounding noises can sometimes obscure the primary frequency focus.
4. The application records the date, the exact frequency in Hertz (Hz), and the noise level in decibels (dB).

Exporting Data for Technical Assistance: After recording, technicians can create an audio file from the app to attach to a Technical Assistance Center (TAC) case. This involves selecting the "More" option after recording, then choosing "Exportieren (Export)" to send the file.

Important Warnings for Owners

Owners should be aware that, according to this Technical Service Bulletin, brake squeal is considered a normal characteristic of the brake system and is not a defect. Furthermore, this TSB is informational only and is not applicable to any Audi Warranty.
