I was driving on highway when all of sudden my vehicle began to shake hard and lose power, every time I stepped on the accelerator the check engine light came on, this happened on [XXX] in Los Baños, CA. My safety was at risk as all other traffic was going past me including semi trucks as I was trying to find a safe place to pull over out of harms way, as I was doing this the car shut off completely before I could even pull over. I had to get the vehicle towed to my local dealership where they had it for almost 3 weeks now, only diagnostic I’ve had back was that it has 2 misfires, one in cylinder 2 and the other in cylinder 4, and that it has no compression in cylinder 2. They said it isn’t covered under warranty which I believe should be looked into as I could of been serious hurt or lost my life due to this issues. I’ve had the vehicle serviced up to date since I’ve owed it and also noticed high oil consumption, not sure if this led to engine failure? The final diagnosis from Hyandai dealer is that engine is no good anymore and need replacement but it’s not covered under warranty. The engine violently vibrates and no matter how much I get an oil change it burns so fast and I have to keep adding. It's not leaking, just burning. I plugged in a diagnostic tester and it said that the 3rd cylinder was misfiring. I haven't had the car for very long, and this is not normal. I take good care of it.

Hi. This is [XXX] My car has white paint peeling issue and complained to Hyundai but they denied my request. I saw so many white color hyundai and kia paint peeling issue. I can’t understand why they have not a recall service. This is a clearly manufacturer’s fault and responsibility. I think NHTSA should order hyundai to issue a recall immediately. Even if not a safty related issue, NHTSA must listen to the consumer’s opinion INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Hyundai is denying a lifetime warranty claim on my 2015 Hyundai Sonata. Recalls have been completed on my vehicle and even with knock sensor recall completed my engine light is not on and they will not grant me a new engine. If though the Hyundai Dealer agrees that the engine has the bearing issue that would grant me a new engine.

- #11647733March 11, 2025FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
The contact owns a 2020 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving at 35 MPH, the vehicle made a booming sound. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact then started to hear the sound outside the vehicle and noticed that the vehicle was losing gasoline very quickly. The vehicle started to stall, and the gas tank was almost empty when the contact arrived home. The vehicle was then taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed with floor damage, and the floor damage showed deformation on the rear passenger’s seat, and the fuel cover had popped off due to the deformation, which caused the noise in the cabin. The vehicle was towed to another dealer where the vehicle was repaired, with a new fuel pump cover, and the rear seats were replaced. On another occasion, the fuel pump failure reoccurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 77,524.

My transmission on my 21 Hyundai sonata n line has failed. It began when the car needed to emergency brake when someone jump into my lane on the road. There’s grinding, and whining in the transmission along with delayed shifts, jerking and a burning smell that comes through the vents of my car upon start up. The recall on this transmission is because it may become defective. I bought the vehicle from a Honda not a Hyundai dealer in March of 2023 the recall campaign closed out Jan of 2023. According to Hyundai records show that the TCU update remedy was performed Jan of 23. However, even though that TCU update was performed, 2 years later my transmission began to fail. I brought it to my local dealer for a transmission drain and refill not a flush. Per the service manual it’s a drain and refill however they flushed it which caused the transmission to worsen. I took it back to have it diagnosed and I was told I needed my transmission replaced. Didn’t even explain why or go into further detail what was wrong with the transmission. I brought up the recall on the transmission and they did nothing to honor it. Now I’m stuck with a car with a broken transmission i can’t afford to fix and I’m gonna be forced to hand the car over to the bank. If this recall can still be honored please help.

My vehicle was purchased in 2018 and currently has 128,000 miles. I took it to the dealership because it was puttering and not holding pil. The dealership did some work on the vehicle. Furthermore, after that trip to the dealership, my car kept burning oil even after recent oil changes that I found myself constantly adding oil. I took it to another licensed mechanic who informed me after a tune up that my car is consistently burning oil. This was after I had a recent oil change. The engine is defective, hyundai knows they are defective and refuse to do anything about it.

Overheated engine alarm came on while I was on the freeway on a rainy day. Vehicle was towed to Hyundai dealership in which service technician found that the part preventing water from leaking into the muffler was broken. Hyundai dealership has ordered replacement part but it is on backorder. The broken part that needed replacement has been on backorder for close to a month and there is not an ETA of when the part will be received. Prior to the overheated engine alarm going off, cold air was blowing out of the vents even when the heat option was selected.

Engine oil level goes low very soon after an oil change less than 1000 miles driven and oil becomes black on dip stick when checking the oil level in between oil changes and there is no noticeable oil leaks. At one point the oil level was below the low level indicator on dip stick.

I took my car in for a standard oil change and tune up. They found out that the fuel tank had expanded to the point where it caused significant damage to the metal frame. The Hyundai dealership sent it to the local body shop for an estimate for the frame, they sent it back because the dealership hadn't removed the gas tank, then the dealership sent it back to the body shop. It's been 3+ weeks, my car is still in the shop, and I haven't received any indication of whether my car is able to be fixed. The dashboard never displayed any warning messages and there were no symptoms of the problem. I had no idea the gas tank had expanded and could've caused an explosion or fire.

submitting a formal complaint to NHTSA regarding unresolved safety defects in my 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. Despite Safety Recall 251 issued in December 2023 for an ABS fire hazard, my vehicle continues to experience sudden loss of acceleration, engine shutdowns, and persistent dashboard warnings. Failed Recall Repairs & Lack of Transparency Since receiving the recall notice, my vehicle has been serviced multiple times at Thompson Hyundai in Dundalk, MD, yet the defects persist. When I requested service records to verify recall repairs, I was told that Thompson Hyundai’s acquisition by Heritage prevents them from providing full documentation—only three edited records missing key details. This raises concerns about: 1.Whether recall repairs are actually resolving safety defects. 2.Hyundai’s failure to maintain proper repair documentation. 3.The risk that other Hyundai vehicles remain unsafe due to incomplete recall fixes. Life-Threatening Breakdowns & Financial Hardship Since Hyundai’s supposed “fix,” my vehicle has broken down at least eight times, including major highways and intersections. On [XXX], on [XXX], my car suddenly lost power in heavy traffic, nearly causing a multi-vehicle accident. As a result: •I lost my job due to missed work from repeated breakdowns. •I suffered severe emotional distress, including PTSD-like symptoms and asthma attacks requiring medical attention. •I am facing financial instability from lost income and costly rental vehicles. Request for NHTSA Investigation Given Hyundai’s failure to resolve these defects, I urge NHTSA to: 1.Investigate whether Hyundai’s recall repairs fully resolve the defect. 2.Review dealerships’ recall documentation practices. 3.Determine if further regulatory action is needed to protect consumers. I am pursuing direct resolution with Hyundai but am bringing this to NHTSA in the interest of public safety. I appreciate your review and look forward to your response. My vehicle had the following symptoms: 1. Alternating between sluggish acceleration/handling AND rough acceleration with the vehicle lurching forward at times 2. Check engine light with error code P00010 3. Occurred frequently over a one month period (5+ times) This was unsafe as the car could not properly accelerate and would lurch forward at intersections. This could easily have led to a crash. We limited driving. This issue was observed at the dealer where I repaired issue. The issue is exactly the same as the issue described in the recall for Hyundai Sonata 2015 under SB-10058136-4434 and was resolved by replacement of the E-CVVT seal as described. This issue is ridiculous for me to deal with and put my family as risk given it a KNOWN issue for Hyundai in their other vehicles.
