The contact's father owns a 2017 Honda Civic. The contact stated that the A/C unit was blowing warm air while activated. Due to the failure, the defroster system failed to clear the glass as intended. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, where the mechanic discovered that the A/C compressor shaft seal and the A/C evaporator were inoperable. The mechanic also discovered that flammable gas was leaking from the A/C evaporator system into the cabin of the vehicle. The contact was informed that the A/C compressor shaft seal was covered under warranty; however, the A/C evaporator was not covered. The dealer submitted a Goodwill request to the manufacturer, and the manufacturer agreed to cover 75% of the cost of the repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and the contact opened a Goodwill request for assistance; however, the manufacturer denied the request. The contact was provided with a case number. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 29,000.

The white paint on my 2016 Honda Civic keeps peeling, which looks bad and is leading to structural rust developing in several areas of my car. Fixing it will be costly, and the paint quality on these vehicles isn't very good, causing frustration for owners. Furthermore, my steering wheel has been sticking for some time, and I've consulted several shops for their thoughts. This also comes with a hefty repair price, and I believe it is Honda's duty to address these problems.

- #11729909April 8, 2026FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING, UNKNOWN OR OTHER
This vehicle suffers from phantom braking. With the adaptive cruise control set, at times, in the display of the instrument cluster, the display shows a semi, motorcycle or car that is not there in real life. When this happens the car applies the brakes and starts slowing down. Sometimes this is bad enough that the collision warning message comes on and the brake application is very aggressive. The type of weather or road surface does not seem to matter. It seems to be very random. This happens once a week. Not just on the date provided below.

What component or system failed: The entire Air Conditioning system, specifically the AC Compressor, Condenser, and Evaporator, failed catastrophically. The authorized Honda dealer diagnosed it as "Black Death," meaning the AC compressor internally shattered, sending metal shrapnel and contaminated oil throughout all AC lines and components. How was your safety put at risk: This failure is a SEVERE SAFETY HAZARD. Because the AC compressor is dead, the windshield defroster/defogger system no longer functions. During rain or changes in temperature/humidity, the inside of the windshield fogs up instantly and cannot be cleared. This causes a sudden and complete loss of driver visibility, creating a high risk of a fatal crash on the highway. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed: Yes. The vehicle was inspected by an authorized Honda dealership. The technician confirmed the catastrophic failure ("Black Death") and stated the entire system needs to be replaced. Previous history & Manufacturer response: Honda has known defects with the 2016 Civic AC system (Warranty Extensions 19-091 & 23-039). The condenser was previously replaced under warranty in 2023. Now, the defective compressor shaft seal has led to the complete destruction of the system. Despite this being a known defect that causes secondary damage to the entire system, Honda Corporate has refused to cover the repair costs for the collateral damage (evaporator and lines). The parts are currently on the vehicle and available for inspection. Were there warning lamps: There were no warning lights on the dashboard prior to the failure. The only symptom was the AC suddenly blowing hot air and the immediate loss of the defogging capability.

A complaint is being filed regarding a **2025 Honda Civic** involving failure to diagnose and repair a safety-related suspension defect during the warranty period. While under warranty (~20,000 miles), a **clunking noise from the rear suspension** was repeatedly reported to Tamaroff Honda [XXX] ). Despite multiple service visits and complaints to both the dealership and American Honda (Case #XXX and #XXX), no proper diagnosis or repair was performed. After continued inaction, another Honda dealership identified a **broken rear shock absorber with an active fluid leak**, a safety-critical defect affecting vehicle stability and control. This condition existed and was reported during the warranty period but was dismissed. There is also a pattern of complaint mishandling, including lack of follow-up and unresolved case activity. Requests for service records and complaint documentation have not been fulfilled. This complaint requests investigation into the safety risk and failure to diagnose and repair a known defect during warranty. My 2016 Honda Civic w/ 66000 miles has been experiencing issues with the steering wheel wherein after driving for approximately 10-15 minutes the steering wheel will start "sticking" when attempting to make micro-adjustments. This primarily occurs at highway speeds, however after starting it does still occur at lower city speeds. This problem causes a significant safety issue, particularly when traveling at highway speeds as a result of increased risk of over correction after the steering wheel becomes unstuck. As an example, when making micro-adjustments to maintain a straight direction, I attempted to move the wheel to the left and the steering wheel became stuck for a moment, requiring higher than normal force to turn. When the steering wheel released, the higher force caused the wheel to turn more than desired, resulting in a minor over correction. This then required me to turn the wheel back to the right to maintain position within the lane, however it again became stuck, requiring higher than normal force to turn and resulted in a near continuous cycle. After bringing the vehicle to a Honda Repair Center on 04/04/2026, they diagnosed the issues as a failure with the rack and pinion assembly within the EPS system. The quoted cost of replacement was $4571.09. Unfortunately, while there is an active recall for this issue for 11th gen 2022-24 Civics, despite numerous complaints of the same issue there is no such recall for 10th gen 2016-2020 civics. This problem needs to be rectified, and a mass recall on all civics since 2016 need to be issued.

- #11729129April 3, 2026AIR BAGS
I had purchased the vehicle from a private seller. It had an SRS light on at the time I purchased it. The code reader indicated high resistance to the driver airbag. While trying to change the clock spring, I removed the drivers airbag from the steering wheel and found that the wires to the airbag were cut and the wires from the harness were connected to two black blocks. A google search said that these blocks were most likely emulators. I don’t know for sure but they were certainly put there intentionally by someone and my airbag was entirely disconnected except for the green ground wire.

I am submitting a formal safety complaint regarding my 2017 Honda Civic, which is experiencing a serious steering issue that appears to be consistent with a known defect currently under recall for similar vehicles. When driving at speeds above approximately 40 mph, the steering wheel becomes noticeably “sticky” or resistant, making it difficult to maintain smooth and controlled steering. This condition creates a safety concern, particularly at highway speeds, as it affects the vehicle’s responsiveness and handling. I understand that there is an existing recall related to steering issues affecting certain Honda Civic models. However, my vehicle’s VIN is not currently included in the recall population, despite exhibiting the same symptoms described in those cases. Given that this appears to be a widespread and documented issue, I believe my vehicle may also be affected by the same underlying defect. I am concerned that I have to pay out of pocket for a repair that is directly related to a known safety issue already acknowledged in other vehicles of the same make and model. I respectfully request that NHTSA review this matter, investigate whether the recall scope should be expanded, and take appropriate action to ensure all affected vehicles are covered. I am happy to provide additional details, including my VIN, maintenance records, or further documentation upon request. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. Sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

- #11728682April 1, 2026FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL
I originally notified my dealer of concerns with my vehicles behavior while using cruise control and they verified that the systems were 'calibrated and working properly'. On a regular basis, my car will automatically and erroneously engage the vehicles brakes while driving, especially while using the automatic cruise control function. This behavior is far worse at night but has happened to me during the day as well and under all weather conditions. Typically, the gauge cluster will show a motorcycle or car being 'detected' on the screen before or at the same time this happens even though there typically is nothing there. Additionally, this may or may not be related. The entire driver assist system and cruise control are constantly failing to function and often show as 'unavailable' - the cruise control, lane keep, and auto stop features will stop working at random while in use constantly; seemingly heavily influenced by even that slightest adverse conditions - driving in the cold? 'System unavailable'. A rain drop hit the windshield? 'System unavailable'. Road is wet? System unavailable'. While I am able to stay alert and correct these issues as they are constantly arising, they should not be available for use on public roads as they at random cause the vehicle to operate in an unpredictable manner and create a significant hazard for other drivers on the road who may not be paying attention - it's not if someone will collide with the back of the vehicle but rather when and how severe - this vehicle should not be hitting the brakes when there is nothing to stop for and a system like cruise control should not constantly and randomly stop working while in use.

- #11728558April 1, 2026STEERING, SUSPENSION, LANE DEPARTURE: WARNING
I am reporting a severe steering safety defect on my 2022 Honda Civic that matches the symptoms of NHTSA Campaign Number 24V-744 and Honda TSB 23-037.At highway speeds (40–70 mph), the steering wheel "sticks" or "notches" in the center position. To make small lane adjustments, I must apply significant force to "break" the wheel loose. This causes the car to jerk or overcorrect, creating a high risk of a collision. Additionally, there is a metallic clicking/knocking noise coming from the steering rack during low-speed maneuvers.I have contacted Honda Corporate, but they denied a repair because my specific VIN has not yet been uploaded to the 24V-744 recall database, despite the vehicle exhibiting the exact manufacturing defect (swollen worm gear/high friction) described in the recall. The vehicle has approximately 62,000 miles and the issue has been persistent since 40,000 miles.I am requesting that NHTSA investigate why my production batch is excluded from the current recall despite having an identical steering gearbox failure that renders the vehicle unsafe to drive.

The steering is often "notchy", especially in warmer weather. When trying to make small steering adjustments while driving the wheel will resist changes until turned hard enough that it jerks suddenly. This issue makes driving in a lane next to another car uncomfortable as the driver is never confident that the wheel will actually turn, especially on the highway or at high speeds. The issue on this particular vehicle has not been reproduce by a service center because the vehicle is out of warranty. However, this issue is widely reported online and Honda has taken no action to rectify this safety issue. There are no warning lamps or other warnings provided by the car. The issue has consistently been happening for over 3 years.
