We were driving on 95S when the Yukon Denali automatically shifted itself from D to N. On the dash it had a warning message to press start again. When my husband did that we could smell a smoke smell. Meanwhile, we are in the middle lane of the highway while trying to safely get off the middle of the interstate without being rear ended by the semi that was behind us. We finally made it to the side of the interstate where my husband was able to put the Yukon in park. He was never able to get the vehicle back in Drive. The car would never click back over to start up again. We had to have the vehicle towed to the nearest GMC dealership where it has now been for almost 3 weeks with no timeline for a date of a new engine. I was told it needed a new engine and radiator. Said the alternator was trying to catch fire when he was trying to start the vehicle. This is the SECOND time the Yukon has been in the dealership in 4 months for this recall issue. This time it is 2hrs away from my home.

On April 7, 2026, I was driving my 2023 GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate on the interstate at approximately 70 mph, accelerating to pass a car so I could get off on my exit. Without warning, the dashboard displayed "Engine shut off, press start button" and the engine lost power. I coasted off the interstate to the shoulder safely. I was alone in the vehicle. I thought it was a battery issue and had a coworker attempt a jump. The vehicle would not restart. I called Moses GMC of Huntington, WV, and they dispatched a tow through GMC Roadside Assistance. I waited approximately 2 hours on the shoulder for the tow. After the tow, Pete, the Moses GMC service manager, called and said nothing was wrong with the vehicle, that it only needed an oil change. He said it started right up and he drove it into the bay. Moses performed the oil change. When the technician test drove it afterward, the engine fully shut down on the hill leaving the dealership property. My husband Zach happened to drive past and saw the Yukon stopped with hazard lights on at the top of the exit. Pete called that evening and said, "I think there actually is something wrong with it." On April 10, 2026, Pete confirmed the failure is the GM 6.2L V8 L87 engine defect covered under NHTSA Recall 25V-274 (connecting rod/crankshaft manufacturing defect). Full engine replacement required, estimated 6-7 weeks. This vehicle was previously inspected by Moses GMC under Recall 25V-274 in August 2025 and cleared at that time, approximately 8 months before the April 7 shutdown. Vehicle had ~38,000 miles, garage kept, full maintenance records, no prior engine issues or warning signs. No crash, no injury, no other vehicles involved in any of the three failure events.

Good afternoon, I am submitting this complaint to report a serious and potentially life-threatening safety issue involving my 2022 GMC Yukon Denali. While traveling northbound on State Road 417 (toll road) in Florida, approaching Exit 45, I was driving approximately 75 mph when, without any warning, the vehicle suddenly shifted itself into neutral. A message immediately appeared on the dashboard instructing me to press the start button, and the vehicle rapidly lost power and began to decelerate in the middle lane of a high-speed highway. This sudden loss of power created an extremely dangerous situation that could have easily resulted in a major collision. Vehicles behind me were traveling at highway speeds, and I had no ability to safely maintain speed or predict the failure. The lack of warning makes this issue especially concerning, as there was no opportunity to take preventive action. After the incident, I contacted OnStar for assistance. The vehicle was towed to Carl Black GMC, where the service advisor confirmed that the engine requires a full replacement. A complete engine failure occurring suddenly at highway speeds, without warning, is not just a mechanical issue—it is a critical safety hazard. This type of failure puts not only the driver but also passengers and surrounding motorists at serious risk of injury or death. It is deeply concerning that a vehicle of this age and caliber would experience such a catastrophic failure. Issues like this must be addressed immediately, as they have the potential to cause severe accidents if they continue to occur without warning. I strongly urge that this matter be investigated thoroughly and that appropriate action be taken to ensure that other drivers are not placed in similar dangerous situations. I was fortunate that my children were not in the vehicle at the time of this incident. The outcome could have been far worse. Please let me know if additional information is required.

The contact owns a 2021 GMC Yukon. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle shuddered. The message to restart the vehicle was displayed. The contact stated that the vehicle shut off unexpectedly. Additionally, the check engine warning light was illuminated the day before the failure. The contact stated that while attempting to start the vehicle, the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken to Auto Zone and diagnosed with a fuel pump control module failure. The contact was made aware of an undisclosed recall. The contact was referred to the dealer for assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was later towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with a failed fuel pump control module. The contact was informed that the fuel pump control module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact referenced an unknown recall with a similar failure; however, the VIN was not associated with a recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The contact was advised to contact the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.

I was driving on the highway, I-55 N just north of Bloomington. I was on cruise control and was coming up to a lane merge going into construction zone. I braked, moved over, turned off cruise control and noticed the engine was cut off and rpm’s dropped to 0. Luckily I was able to get to the shoulder before the highway merged with no shoulder in construction zone. I have the 6.2 L engine in the GMC and have been through propulsion test and 2 oil changes since the test. My engine failed during highway travel and I see on several threads this unfortunately is an unsafe situation others have been in. What are my options as I do not feel safe in a vehicle that will turn off unexpectedly on highway travel.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL, ENGINE, FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
2021 Yukon Denali. Inspected by dealer under recall. Passed dealership test and new oil viscosity adjustment completed by dealer at 39k miles. Told no issues with vehicle continue to drive it. Today 4-14-26 on the interstate traveling 75mph the engine seized and lost all power. Instrument panel showed 0rpm as I coasted to a stop and the engine lost all power. I placed the vehicle in park on the shoulder and attempted to restart. Nothing! Engine would crank. Towed to Olathe gmc dealer and they took one looke at it , diagnosed it said it had all symptoms of total engine failure. Ordered me an engine and told 6 weeks out. Sent me home in a loaner. Service department told me They get one everyday sometime more than 1. They have hertz rental on standby for warranty loaner vehicle. I find it spilling that these vehicles come time to be sold. They’re all bad according to the service department. I also find it very frustrating that they park the broken defective vehicles at the very back of the dealer lot to hide the graveyard of 6.2’s from the public. My vehicle is under 5 year 60k warranty and engine is being replaced, but the tech could not share the extent of what would be replaced. All he mentioned was the block. Zero warning engine just went up like a grenade at 75mpg on the highway. Wife’s vehicle and left me stranded 2 hours from home on a work trip.

Lifter and camshaft failure. Metal shards throughout the engine. Engine knocking and uncontrollable shaking. Safety was at risk of myself (driver) and two kids under the age of [XXX] while being broke down on a highway as vehicle was un-drivable. Reviewed by a Chevrolet dealership and Automotive repair shop both agreed on same repairs needed. No warning lights appeared before incident, multiple came up seconds after the problem occurred. The contact stated upon taking the vehicle to the service center for the tire's replacement service, the mechanic informed the contact that the PSI label included an inaccurate PSI recommendation for the 22-inch original tires. The contact stated that the recommended PSI listed on the tire label was for the 20-inch optional tires that were not installed on the vehicle during purchase. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 50.

I took this vehicle in for the recall that GM had indicated. The vehicle was taken to a GMC dealer and “passed” the PICO test and the oil was changed out as recommended. Two weeks ago, the engine completely seized while driving in the interstate and was towed back to the dealership. I am now waiting on engine replacement after passing their solution. The car has roughly 30,000 miles on it.

My engine has metal flake in it and once which is a sign of engine failure. I reported it to GM they said it was a normal amount and to keep an eye on it the next day toil change. They issued a recall on the 6.2L motors and they have not on the 5.3L motors and this one is doing the same thing. I want to get ahead of the ball before my engine give out on the highway but GM is treating it like it’s not a big deal.
