My 2017 Ford F150 has a terrible downshift issue. I am surprised it hasn't dropped the transmission on the road. It has been an issue for several years. It happens a lot when you let off the gas going into a curve, which scares me based on what I am seeing with the ongoing investigation. This needs to be fixed.

Multiple times while driving my 2016 F-150 I would lose all power to my wheels. The RPMs would rise but no power would be transferred to the wheels. This happened one time while on the on ramp at 50+ MPH, a second time while drive down a city street at about 30 MPH, a third time while starting from a stop light, and a fourth time again when driving in the city at about 45 MPH. The check engine light would come on for a minute or two and then turn off. After the vehicle did this for the fourth time the check engine light stayed on. After reviewing there are two error codes the vehicle relayed that the mechanic said are related. During these 4 instances there were two time (highway on ramp and city street at 30 MPH when the loss of power to the wheels caused the vehicle directly behind the F-150 to have to swerve around to prevent a collision. P0722 (Output Shaft Speed Sensor Circuit No Signal) and P061A (Internal Control Module Torque Performance). The vehicle is available as well as the Scan results from the OBD2 sensor from 4 February 2026. The vehicle was not taken to an auto shop due to the check engine light not remaining lit prior to the 4 February incident at that point it remained lit and an OBD2 scanner was used to read the error.

Vehicle would get stuck in gear while driving, then randomly downshift harshly. Occurred in Feb 2025 and immediately brought in for service at 98730 miles. Service advancetrack, wrench light, and no hill start assist light illuminated on dash. Truck would go into limp mode. P0715:00-64 and P0717:00-6C codes were pulled at 1st mechanic shop. 1st shop did not work on transmissions and referred me to ford dealership. Dealership wasn’t able to reproduce hard shifting, but while test driving it went into limp mode with all previously mentioned lights on the dash again. Code P0717 was thrown again. Determined bad lead frame and needed replacement. Paid out of pocket for lead frame, pump adaptor, bulk head connector, and filter replacement. Problem has not occurred again since repair.

While driving vehicle between approximately 30-50mph and making a slight turn left or right and lane changes, vehicle steering would stick. Power steering would get stuck and driver would have to manually correct the steering wheel in the opposite direction after lane changes or slight turn to prevent further veering off of the vehicle. Only occurs when vehicle speed is approximately 30-50mph.

Vehicle failed to shift properly while making multiple left and right turns from a stop (for the record, the vehicle also had shifting problems at other times). This resulted in the vehicle hesitating while entering traffic. Multiple times other vehicles had to beep horns and brake emergently. One time an 18 wheeler almost tboned me while I had my 2 year old some in the back seat. Definitely a safety issue that almost cost my son his life.

The contact owns a 2018 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted before slamming into gear. The vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that on a separate occasion, while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was an abnormal popping sound coming from the transmission. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with transmission failure. The transmission was rebuilt; however, the failure persisted. Most recently, while driving 55 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the transmission downshifted unexpectedly. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, no cause for the failure was found. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was unknown.

My 2017 F-150 had only 87k Miles on it. I don't tow boats or anything heavy. Two months ago my transmission started giving me problems banging when putting in gear and causing my rear end to lock up. Took to Ronnie Thompson Ford dealership in Elijay Ga and they had to replace my rear end. 3500.00 less then 3 weeks later the transmission was not acting right causing shifting and vibration issues. Took to same Dealership in Elijay Ga as I was outta twn again at my second home. They said My transmission was failing and I needed at min a new torque converter. As I could not afford the high price of the Ford Dealership repair I Came back home to South FL and had the Transmission rebuilt for 5500.00 at Gold Coast Transmission in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Ive now Spent over 9K dollars in the last two months to fix this problem. Im a recently retired Ft Lauderdale cop and I cant afford to buy a new vehicle so I've had to put all this money into this prob. Im a Ford guy, my last Ford f150 was a 2000. I put 267k miles on it and had it 18 yrs before I bought this truck. Prior to that I had a 94' Ford Ranger. I put 197k miles on it and before that a 72 Cutlass in HS. Im [XXX] old and have had only 4 cars my whole life. I TAKE CARE OF MY VEHICLES. Of the 4 cars this 2017 is the only new car Ive ever owned and have had more problems with it then any. I see you guys are looking at these transmission and I wanted my complaint documented. If there is a recall I feel Ford should have to reimburse me for the transmission and rear end I just had to replace. Thanks for looking out for the little guy. I own a 2015 Ford F-150 with approximately 175,000 miles. I have experienced intermittent hard shifting at low speeds for many years. During normal driving, the transmission occasionally shifts very harshly, producing a loud knocking noise and causing the truck to jerk unexpectedly. I do not recall the exact first occurrence, but the hard shifting has been happening since I have owned the truck. I never thought much of it until recently reading about a transmission investigation for similar F-150 models. In December 2025, I experienced a particularly severe hard shift. During this incident, the truck jerked extremely hard and the powertrain warning light momentarily illuminated. This felt unsafe and unexpected. I had the vehicle inspected by an independent mechanic, but no diagnostic trouble codes were found at the time of inspection. Despite this, the hard shifting continues to occur intermittently. This issue is a safety concern due to the sudden and harsh movement of the vehicle without warning.

At around 68K miles, we started experiencing rough shifting and aggressive clunking into gear while driving. On getting the transmission checked, we were told we would require a new transmission in the near future. At this time, however, no codes came up on the reader, and no warning lights were on. Dark fluid and metal shavings were found by the transmission professional's inspection at both a Ford dealership and a private transmission shop. On driving home from the shop, the rough shifting and bucking became so severe, we felt unsafe completing the drive home and turned back to the shop. There were still no warning lights on, however it was determined that the transmission had failed completely and the truck was no longer drivable. This resulted in a new transmission having to be installed with the truck only having 68K miles on it.

The transmission will sporadically shift hard and make a squeal noise on acceleration and deceleration between 20 and 50 MPH. Yes it's available for inspection. It has never stopped completely so the risk factor is unknown. Not reported to dealer or independent mechanic at this time nor has it been inspected by the manufacturer or government agency. There are no warning lights dash messages ever displayed.
