I purchased a vehicle from a dealer and there was an open recall for said vehicle. I was looking on the NHTSA.gov website and discovered a document mentioning that it is illegal for a dealership to sell a vehicle with an open & not fixed recall, prior to selling said vehicle. I am not entirely sure what this means for me and my vehicle but, I wanted to submit a claim just in case. Please contact me back if you require more information. I have scheduled a service at a certified Volkswagen dealership in my area to repair the suction jet pump recall for next Thursday (March 6) but, am afraid to drive the car until then as I started experiencing issues 2 days after the purchase of my GTI. Thank you.

Travel Assist is disabled which includes Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keep Assist. The warning lights flash on and off, sometimes multiple times a second, sounding a loud beeping each time. It is triggered at engine start and persists through all speeds. I have experienced it 0-70 mph. The flashing lights and associated rapid beeping indicating the failure is extremely distracting while driving. Warning lights and warning sounds are designed to alert the driver to a potential safety issue so ignoring the lights and sounds is dangerous in the event it is a different caution/warning. However, also not ignoring it is dangerous because of the frequency of the warnings which causes the driver to look away from the road. After speaking with the maintenance department at my VW dealership, they indicated that this is a widely known problem that is remedied only with the replacement of the steering wheel. There are several other sensors that are triggered by the same issue I was told by the maintenance department. They are uncertain at this time if it impacts the airbag system which is another potential safety concern. The steering wheel can only be ordered after inspection by the maintenance department and there is shortage and/or back order of the part to fix the problem.

The hill assist feature causes the vehicle to stall due to long hold times. It's caused me to back up traffic numerous times and has almost caused people behind me to rear end me

There wasn't a proper "Problem Parts" option for my issue. My car has a manual transmission and VW has decided that adding a brake hold feature whenever the car is stopped at an intersection or in traffic etc. would be a good idea. I'm hear to tell you I have almost become part several accidents with this car even though it only has 40 miles on it. This is a well know issue with these cars that has been designed into them. I have been driving manual transmission cars for over 20 years without this issue. The problem is when I come to a stop the car holds the brake for an additional three Mississippi seconds. This screws up timing when pulling out into traffic which will likely cause an accident at some point. I have stalled the car trying to pull out into traffic and while in stop and go traffic. Luckily the person behind me was able to slam on their brakes before ramming me. I have considered rolling though stop signs to avoid stopping and possibly stalling the car. There have been many complaints about this online. The problem could easily be fixed with a software update from VW. Realistically if there was a brake hold with only 1 Mississippi hold time it would be great or none at all.

The hill start assist in the vehicle (with a manual transmission) makes it dangerous for pulling out into traffic if you are stopped on a hill. It holds the car for a predetermined length of time if you come to a complete stop on the hill as you legally are required to at a red light/stop sign making you unable to pull safely into traffic. It is very easy to forget this annoying feature exists on new intersections you may not think of as being inclined, or when you are focusing more on the traffic and are just expecting the vehicle to operate normally to pull into traffic as with any other flat intersection. It has caused me to stall the vehicle numerous times while attempting to enter traffic. I know how to drive a manual transmission and not roll backwards on a hill. VW needs to offer an “off” option for this feature for the safety of drivers. This “safety feature” is going to get someone hurt or worse.

The steering wheel clockspring mechanism has failed causing the vehicle steering wheel operated controls (including the horn) to stop working. The airbag warning lamp illuminated on the dashboard, indicating the airbag system may not be functional. Apparently Volkswagen has issued a recall/extended the warranty on many VW models in light of the high failure rate of the clockspring mechanism, however my 2017 GTI is not currently covered. Perhaps the recall/extended warranty should be expanded in scope.

The chrome trim frame on the manual gear shift cover cracks and flakes off, causing dangerous sharp edges that have cut the hands of multiple members of my family. Same as the issue causing VW Service Action 34J7/34L9 except for manual transmission vehicles. Dealership looked up my VIN and said no recall or Service Action was available even though they know it's a common issue.

I am experiencing the same problem reported in NHTSA ID Number: 11587076. I am writing to let you know that this problem is not limited to the Golf R model but also affects the Golf GTI models with manual transmission. The description of the problem in report 11587076 matches my experience exactly so I will not repeat it here. An additional problem possibly related to this one is that there is no brake boost when the engine is not running. With all other cars I have owned, there has been some residual boost from the brake servo that is available to stop the car from rolling between the time when the clutch pedal is depressed and when the engine is started. In the same situation with this car, extreme pressure on the brake pedal or application of the parking brake is needed to stop the rolling. In my opinion, this constitutes a safety hazard.

VW has implemented a so-called and unwanted safety feature called "Hill Assist" which locks the brakes on manual transmisson models which has many times nearly caused an accident. This system locks the brakes when the clutch is activated and brakes are applied and can prevent the car from moving forward for two to three seconds, or cause a vehicle stall. This system activates for two to three seconds and can't be modified or turned off. This system also works on a predetermined amount of time and no user interaction can change the time or hold/braking force. This is particularly dangerous in a left hand turn situation with multiple cars where a stall or hesitation for the car could prove dangerous or fatal. VW should turn this feature off or allow users to turn it off completely, WITHOUT having to turn it off for every startup.

Earlier in 2024, Volkswagen of America issued a recall for the Suction Jet Pump, on the 14th of December i went to VW of Pompano Beach in Florida, to get the recall done, however, after they delivered back the car, it started to leak fuel after i put gas on it. On December 17th I took it again to the dealer to get it fixed and they gave me back the vehicle on December 19th. On [XXX] I put gas on the vehicle and it started to leak fuel again and this time it was way worse than before. I accuse the dealer of being responsible of performing a bad job on the recall as the vehicle had never leaked fuel before I had the recall done. I have the vehicle since February 2024. It worries me that there is a big possibility that the car can catch on fire if by any reason there is a spark near to me or there is any thing that can trigger the fuel to ignite. The hill hold assist on the MK8 VW GTI is overly aggressive, creating safety concerns. When starting on a hill, there is a 2-3 second delay where the car strongly holds the brakes, even after the brake light disengages. This could lead to rear-end collisions as following drivers might assume the car is moving. Additionally, in emergency situations, this delay prevents immediate forward movement, increasing risk. For manual transmission models, it also raises the likelihood of stalling, which can further compromise safety. This feature should be less aggressive, should not engage the brakes without the brake lights illuminated, and there should be an option to disable it entirely.

UNKNOWN - Vehicle hill assist. The hill assist feature is overly aggressive and causes the car to stall when going in forward or reverse on an incline. This has the potential to cause rear end collisions and generally unsafe driving conditions. VW needs to either provide a way to disable this feature or reduce the hold time as they had done with previous generation GTIs. This feature is dangerous and unnecessary for any experienced manual transmission driver.

I have a 2023 VW GTI with a manual transmission. It has a feature called "Hill Hold Assist", where it enables the parking brake when you are uphill and at a stop, at a red traffic light, for example. The issue is the feature does not disengage the parking brake for about 3 seconds after you engage the gas to begin moving the car. It basically holds the car for too long when you are trying to get moving. This feature has become more of a hinderance and safety concern, than an assistance: 1) Almost rear ended by another car as the Hill Hold Assist would not disengage at a traffic light 2) The amount of gas and clutch use while the car is being held in place while engaged negatively impacts the longevity of the clutch 3) In the case of an emergency, I am unable to move the vehicle when I need to - this is most concerning. This function would not be an issue if there was a way to disable "Hill Hold Assist", or reduce the time it takes to disengage, but unfortunately Volkswagen did not include a way to disable or adjust this feature in the vehicle's software. I previously had a 2018 GTI, manual transmission, with the same feature. It was far less aggressive, and it could be disabled if needed. Please consider this a safety concern and address with Volkswagen of North America, as I have made several calls to VW with no resolution. Many other VW Gti drivers have concerns about this feature as well. Thanks, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The contact owns a 2022 Volkswagen GTI. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact attempted to make a left turn and noticed that the travel assist feature became inoperable. The contact stated that the Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keep Assist inadvertently became inoperable. The contact stated that the steering wheel inadvertently made a left turn to ongoing traffic and the contact forcefully turned to the right, making the vehicle difficult to control. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact was informed by the dealer that there was a waiting list for a loaner vehicle. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 9,000.

Backup camera, parking sensors, traffic sensors, A/C frequently are disabled. “Component protection mode” is activated and it says it must be taken to the dealer for these items to work. I must manually reset the system in order to get these to work, resetting the system only sometimes fixes the issue. It makes parking and backing out of spots very dangerous at times. VW has stated they were working a on a fix for a long time but it has never come and makes this car unsafe at times.
