Imminent catastrophic engine failure on 2018 Nissan Titan. The engine has developed severe cylinder wall scuffing and loss of compression (150psi vs 264psi spec) on multiple cylinders. This defect can cause loss of power and potential stalling at highway speeds, presenting a safety risk. The failure matches Nissan TSB NTB19-057 (knock/scuffing). Despite a perfect maintenance history, Nissan is denying warranty coverage by claiming there was no oil change service record because the maintenance was not done at a Nissan dealership. The local Nissan dealership confirmed the issue matches the TSB and an independent inspection confirmed the defect is mechanical (piston/cylinder clearance).

The contact owned a 2023 Nissan Titan. The contact stated that while driving in stop-and-go traffic, the contact allowed a vehicle to make a left-hand turn. When the contact depressed the accelerator pedal, the vehicle accelerated independently and rear-ended the vehicle in front, where it came to a stop. The vehicle the contact rear-ended was pushed into the vehicle in front, and that vehicle was pushed into the vehicle in front of it. No warning lights were illuminated. The driver-side air bag deployed; however, the steering wheel cover popped out, and the air bag did not inflate, falling onto the contact's lap. The knee air bag did not inflate, and the passenger-side air bags did not deploy. The contact suffered minor injuries to the neck, possibly whiplash. The contact had a prior medical condition related to his back. A police report was filed. There were no passengers in the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The insurance company was contacted and deemed the vehicle a total loss. The insurance company referred that contact to the manufacturer. Nissan consumer affairs was made aware of the failure and suggested that the contact tow the vehicle to the dealer. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. However, Nissan consumer affairs contacted the dealer and ordered that the vehicle not be inspected. The vehicle remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The contact stated that three weeks before the accident, while driving 20 MPH uphill, the vehicle jerked. Once the vehicle made it up the hill, the vehicle resumed functioning as intended. No warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that six months before the incidents occurred, the contact clipped a crossing deer, and the check engine light illuminated and was still illuminated up to the accident. The failure mileage was approximately 124,000.

I live in [XXX] . Went on vacation to visit our son outside of Nashville Tennessee. Vehicle had approximately 80,000 miles at the time. While driving in traffic and sitting still at lights and odor was coming in the cab. When I got home, I called the dealer about Catalytic converter failure possibly they told me that it was not covered that I should take it to a reputable exhaust repair shop. I took it to Callahan’s auto repair in Pontiac Michigan. They put it on the Hoist and came and told me it had a cracked exhaust manifold which the catalytic converter was attached to and that’s where the odor was coming from. When I purchased the vehicle, I have a lifetime drive caring warranty from infinity through the dealership. I called the dealership and talked to Service and they told me to bring it in while waiting for an appointment. I was due for an oil change and canceled it and looked on Google For problems with the 2017 V8 engine and found a nine page technical service report on the failure of that particular line of engine, I was never notified at any time that my engine was subject to failure, and it had been to the dealership within the last 30 days to have a new transmission pan put underneath the vehicle which Nissan paid 60% of on their own and I paid 40. Upon taking it to the dealership and leaving it, I have to pay $181 for them to analyze the problem they have verbally told me on the phone That my truck needs a new engine because there’s a lifetime warranty on the drivetrain. I don’t feel this problem should be covered under that this is a problem Nissan should put a brand new engine in my vehicle. I would like a response to this. My email is [XXX] . I was in need of medical attention and could not move. The vehicle vehicles, SOS system was unresponsive and ineffective due to the microphone, not working while trying to communicate with the emergency services they were unable to hear me subsequently ending the call under the impression the call was made accidentally. In other cases, this malfunction could mean the difference between life or death.

My vehicle lost power driving down the road while pulling my horse trailer. The engine began to vibrate and knock then shut down completely. I did not make it off the road entirely so the police had to assist with lights to ensure other motorists would avoid collision with me. The engine will not turn over, it makes a single click and is locked up completely.

I heard an audible rattling sound at certain RPMs primarily underload. Upon looking under the vehicle found the issue was the result of the exhaust hangars not being torqued properly and coming loose. The exhaust hanger just behind the transmission had loosened so much that one bolt fell out entirely. Picture provided notice one bolt missing.

POWER TRAIN
The transmission has issues when temperatures drop below 5 Fahrenheit. Specifically if the outside temperature drops below 5 the transmission does not engage gears correctly and results in sluggish acceleration, erratic RPMs and poor fuel economy. To be clear this is NOT with cold starting the vehicle. This is documented instances of the vehicle after sufficient driving time to warm up. I have documented multiple instances of the vehicle having the erratic RPMs and sluggish acceleration when the temperature drops to below 5. Each documented instance is after driving for a period of time (I note this to again document the vehicle is warm and not a cold start). During these drives the outside temperature drops and goes below 5 degrees during the drive at which point the vehicle begins having the sluggish acceleration and erratic RPMs. To reiterate and ensure it is clear. The vehicle is warmed up. It is not a cold start concern. I keep reiterating this because each time I raise the concern to Nissan and the dealer they simply say it is cold, this issue occurs after sufficient time for the vehicle to warm up. This is being raised to NHTSA because when it is happening the sluggish acceleration leads to general drivability issues, along with the erratic RPMs result in substantial loss of MPG. When it occurs gas mileage drops to generally about 8mpgs at best far below the rated MPG of the vehicle and normal driving characteristics.

The contact owns a 2017 Nissan Titan. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, there was an exhaust odor entering the cabin of the vehicle. The contact was forced to lower the windows to escape the foul odor. The contact stated that the failure occurred while the vehicle was performing the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) system operation. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, where the failure was related to the windshield cowl system not properly filtering the air. The contact was provided an estimate for the repair, and declined. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 30,000.

WAS DRIVING TO WORK AND ENGINE HAD HICCUP AND ALMOST SHUTOFF IN MIDDLE OF ROADWAY. WAS ABLE TO LIMP TRUCK TO MY DESTINATION. ENGINE WAS RUNNING ROUGH. NO FAULT CODES OR DASH LIGHTS TO INDICATE ANY ISSUES. TOOK TRUCK TO SHOP AND THEY COULD NOT FIGURE IT OUT. HAD SERVICE SHOP DRAIN OIL AND INSPECT OIL FILTER. METAL DEBRIS WAS FOUND IN OIL AND OIL FILTER. HAD ENGINE REMOVED FROM TRUCK AND FOUND 3 SPUN MAIN BEARINGS, CRANKSHAFT POSSIBLY BROKEN.

The infotainment system within my vehicle is problematic... At any given time the infotainment system will force reboot itself, freeze, freeze or delay when the backup camera is engaged, reboot when the backup camera is engaged. There seems to be no rhyme or reason when this happens and I cannot determine exact steps to reproduce the issues; it just happens.

ENGINE
While operating vehicle within city limits the engine failed and the vehicle was unable to move under its own power. While slowing down, the vehicle's check engine light came on and the vehicle immediately lost power and would not turn over. The vehicle was towed to a mechanic's shop and after reviewing the problem and performing an inspection, it was determined the engine crankshaft seized.
