- #11531338July 10, 2023SERVICE BRAKES, VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: WARNINGS
While driving slowly less than 5 MPH into parking stall the vehicle accelerated excessively while trying to brake the vehicle it continued to accelerate and jumped the curb while I was still pumping the brakes to try to get it to stop and the car finally stopped after hitting the front of the establishment building. No collision warning went off at this time as well. I checked the mats to see if they were against the accelerator pedal and they were not.

Car stopped accelerating on the highway and held me at 40mph. This happened twice. Then before being able to get it in for service while driving the car made a loud bang and came to a rolling stop again on the highway and the transmission control system alarm went off and the car would not move. Had to get towed off the highway and in a rental now. This was a brand new 2023 hyundai kona sel limited.

Driving at highway speed 65MPH, the car stalled and slowed down, not moving forward when pressing the gas. No dash indicators were present. I pulled to the side of the highway, turned the car off, and turned it back on. The check engine and oil indicator came on, and the engine began to smoke. The engine temperature was normal. I immediately turned the car back off and called a tow truck. I waited for about two hours for the tow truck, and multiple times, my car was almost struck by traffic coming from behind. I was pulled off the road as far as I could go without going into the ditch. When the tow truck driver came, I got the tow tools from the back. There was sticky dark residue all over the back hitch, getting on my hands and clothes. When the tow truck driver got to the mechanic, oil was *pouring* out of the bottom. The bed of tow truck was covered in oil. Mechanic stated that oil drain plug was missing, but it had been 3000 miles since my oil change was performed by them, and there were zero signs of it not being tightened enough. No oil leaking at any time in the last 3000 miles. Car was at mechanic 200 miles prior for nail in tire, and no oil leaking at that time either. They are denying responsibility, and have paperwork to show they did oil change correctly. At no point in the last 3000 miles did a dash indicator come on for check engine or oil.

the bcw tends to go on every time the vehicle is driven on a rural two way road to town, approx. less than 20 miles. been to dealership for the problem with the bcw ,paid for diagnostic and scanned for codes ,none apparent.the dealership did minimal calibration without realalinig the sensor. the vehicle will automatically downshift causing the vehicle lurch which is totally unsafe.this began at 6000 miles.no obstructions to sensors as per dealer inspection.a brand new suv awd never been offroad ,or any collision whatsoever.reading forums leads me to believe it occures quite often to this particular vehicle.i called the local global representative and have a case number of 21601680, i thank you for your prompt response to this issue.

We were diving on the interstate and the RPMs went up all the way up and after it came back down the car wouldn’t respond anymore and came to a stop while on the interstate putting my family safety at risk! There were no notifications before the car came to a stop while on the interstate but when we pulled over to the shoulder we tried to start the car again and then the Check engine light came on saying there was issues with the transmission control system. We had the car towed to Hyundai of Metairie on 5/28/23 and notified Hyundai of everything that happened. We were assigned a case# from Hyundai on 5/30/23. We were later contacted by the Hyundai case manager on 6/9/23 and the Service department letting us know that a new transmission will need to be installed on a brand new car we only had for 33 days at the time of this incident!

While traveling at 70 mph on the freeway my 2023 Kona with less than 2,000 miles dropped into neutral and lost speed, almost causing a crash. I’m lucky the driver behind me braked in time. The dealer has informed me that the transmission needs to be replaced.

P235/40 R19 Pirelli P-Zero driver and passenger front tires and rear driver. Purchased Hyundai Kona N on Oct 25, 2023 new (<50miles). Vehicle sold new with these tires already installed. Pressure always maintained per recommendations. Noticed tire cracking and stability issues several months ago. Vehicle has 4000 miles on it now. Front driver and passenger tires are heavily cracked and throwing off chunks of rubber from tread. Rear driver side tire showing slight signs of cracking. Rear passenger tire seems ok. Integrity of the tires are compromised. Highly concerned about a major blowout of the tires. Vehicle is available for inspection upon request. My personal safety and the safety of my children are at risk from major tire blowout, loss of control of vehicle, major accident, injury and/or death. Emailed and spoke with representatives at Palatine Hyundai (Dealer of Sale) on May 9th requesting pro-rata replacement of the defective tires... never was contacted back by the dealer or any representative. Emailed with representatives of Pirelli Tires on May 9th requesting pro-rata replacement of defective tires... was told that there was nothing they could do because the vehicle with the tires was purchased in Illinois and terminated all communication with me. Called Hyundai Customer Assistance and opened a case with them. I was told that even though the vehicle was purchased with the tires installed by dealer, they couldn't do anything and that I should contact the tire manufacturer. I followed up with the call and added photos of the defective tires to the associated case number with Hyundai. Do my kids or I need to die in a car crash before action is taken by the dealer, tire/vehicle manufacturer, or a governmental agency? How far does this need to go?

Started my 2022 Kona EV as usual in my driveway in Southern California in May 2023. Vehicle started then flashed "Check Vehicle System (EV) failure code appeared. Car would not stay started. Had it towed to Dealer they kept if for 2 week and called me to say the vehicle was fixed and I could come pick it up. Repair Order said that the "EV Safety Plug failed upon testing" That was a Friday afternoon. Drove the vehicle home and it seemed to be fixed. The next day (Saturday) went out in the am to run errands and got the same code again and again it wouldn't run. Again had it towed to Dealer (with poor Hyundai Roadside Service). It remains there as I suspect the Dealer tried an easy fix instead of a major one. Will update with status. Already a California Lemon Law buyback situation. I'm not even going to try to work it out because the new car is not operating as advertised. Car is unreliable.

After Stopping for a traffic sign, I proceeded to go forward when a loud noise occurred ( grinding of gears), I loss power to move forward. A car in back of me had to apply his brakes to avoid hitting me. I pulled over to the curb and parked. Upon starting up again, I did not have full power to accelerate. I also could not put the car in reverse. About 10 minutes later, I received a message on the car information screen “ A possible condition with your Transmission Control System has been detected with your 2021 Kona” “ A full system check is recommended to be done soon”. I then drove it to a Dealership where it is now.

My vehicle suffered an electrical fire that wasn't covered under warranty just 2 months after I purchased it. It was inspected by the manufacturer, repair facility(licensed dealer) and insurance however I was denied the inspection report. A Hyundai warranty information sheet states my vehicle had 1 unrepaired service campaign in 6/2022 for the FCA forward collision avoidance. Which meant it was also sold to me without being disclosed. However the NHTSA website says it has 0 unrepaired recalls. Right before the electrical fire the electrical system went haywire. My safetey and my childs safety is at risk everyday I have this vehicle. Without my knowledge or consent, the dealer and my insurer choose to authorize repairs. The fact that at the time of purchase, no safety or crash testing had been completed by the NHTSA is concerning. All vehicles without NHTSA safety testing completed, prior to the 1st being sold and driven on the road puts everyone at risk. The fact that NHTSA does not require these safety tests to be conducted on every single vehicle driven in the states puts everyone at risk, not just my family. Even worse after my vehicle caught fire and caused $12,000 in damages, my car has a clean carfax. There is nothing making reporting this mandatory. insurance companies, thhe dealer/repair facilities do not have to report to the DOL or anyone for that matter that the car was involved in a fire at all. In fact the repair/dealer my vehicle went to reported it as multipoint inspection, maintainence. This puts all drivers and passengers at risk on the road. There's no question that a vehicle after having caught fire and suffered electrical problems is no doubt more susceptible to additional problems down the road. This puts all cars and people on the road in danger, not just me and my own.

I was hearing a weird sound when turning the steering wheel and it reminded me of the same noise that happened before in March 2020 when the column and housing (part number 56390-39000)as well as bolt-safety lock (part number 81919-31000) were replaced at Boulder Hyundai (now called Foundation). This was covered under warranty then as the mileage was 24,928. The notes say: Customer states that there is a sound when turning the wheel. Technician confirmed customer complaint. Sound coming from steering wheel described as “growling”. Found TSB that states if sound is heard to remove and replace steering housing and assembly. Technician removed and replaced steering wheel column and assembly. Test drove to ensure proper operation. All is okay. When this happened again I told Manly Hyundai, and the service advisor said it was the worm gear. However I still had to pay for a diagnosis and repair ($225.09). If this is common, and there is a TSB, I’m very disappointed with what has happened (again I believe). The notes say: Confirmed noise at steering column. Worm shaft bearing noise. Recommend replacing small bearing kit as per TSB 22-ST-005H-1. Replaced worm shaft bearing as per previous diagnosis. Removed old component. Installed new bearing. OK at this time. Noise gone. [Part number ?56359-L1AAAFFF Bearing Kit, also has 84586.] The Kona now has 84,580 + miles. I don’t know how serious the problem is but I knew the sound wasn’t right and I don’t want the steering to fail. I really don’t want this to happen again. Your attention to this is appreciated. Sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

This is the second dangerous situation on the highway. Both were within reasonable speed and distance, and the car couldn't come to a complete stop. This time there was an accident and I hit the car in front of me. I realized the car had a very important brake failure malfunction.

Camshaft pin sheared with 66,000 miles leading to severe engine damage and expense. No known cause but consistent with many online reports of engine issues with this make and model year. Vehicle was well-maintained prior to the incident. No warning lights present until after engine damage occurred.
