For more than two years, at irregular intervals, the passenger air bag light on the front panel blinks and the associated chime sounds for about two minutes, then stops. This happens with no passenger in the seat. I have asked the dealer (Fitzgerald Hyundai in Rockville, MD) several times to look into this. My concern is that if the air bag alarm cannot be trusted when there is no passenger, how can it be trusted to work when it needs to? This seems to me to be an unsafe condition. The dealership stated that since the problem occurs intermittently, they cannot determine a cause, and advised me to contact Hyundai Motor America and would likely meet with a representative. I contacted the company in July, and was designated Case No. [XXX]. Over the next two months, in several email communications with "[XXX]," I was informed that I should take the car to another dealer. I noted that given the intermittent nature of the problem, there was no reason to believe another dealer would have better luck replicating and resolving the issue. That was the total of Hyundai Motor America's help. I terminated the case last month. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

My 2011 Hyundai Elantra has a steering problem. Just yesterday, The steering became loose and clicked when initially turning left or right. At a stop, I was able to turn it back and forth very loosely (no resistance) about 1-2" before a click and then the steering felt *closer* to normal (but not normal). The problem is also that the power steering is a little more difficult to turn either way after the click. This was very scary when it happened and thankfully we were close to home and drove directly there very cautiously. After doing some quick research, it seems this is a common problem. It is due to the failure of a cheap plastic gear inside the steering column where it attaches to the power steering motor. I say cheap because anyone can purchase the plastic piece for less than $10 on Amazon (today I can buy 2 steering couplers for only $6.59). There are online videos showing how one can do a self-repair in just about an hour. I received one quote from a local auto repair shop that it would cost around $350. I called another shop (a local shop of a major auto repair chain) who very quickly told me to only get it repaired by the dealer. Evidently, while the part could be done by me or a local auto shop, he informed me that once the steering column is dropped during the repair, it requires the power steering electronic module to be reprogrammed/calibrated and something that only an OEM dealer could perform. He was knowledgeable about the process because he had to refer many of his customers to get this repair done. He indicated that the reprogramming/calibrating would cost an additional $225. So this cheap plastic part will cost anyone approximately $575 to get fixed. Meanwhile, we'e afraid to drive the car with this loose steering and harder power steering (especially at lower speeds). Based upon what I've read online and after talking with the manager at the national auto repair chain store, this seems to be a common repair of these older Hyundai Elantras.

My car has 76,000 miles on it fully maintained and recorded at hyundai dealerships. One day I’m driving and a check engine light pops up the same day I get it taken in to have it diagnosed, few hours go by I get a call they tell me that the Integrated thermal management module on my car has burnt out. I was surprised because my car is fairly new I asked them how could it prematurely fail they could not give me answer and they told me I would have to pay out of pocket for it and I did. They advised me that I should not drive the car as it could pose severe risk to engine failure as coolant is connected to the part in question. So I left my car there and they ordered a new part and it got fixed the very next day, it was ready for me to pick up. I’m frustrated because I’m not the only one who had this problem and warranty did not cover Hyundai did not want to work with me to resolve my issue and as a result it costed me money and time. I’m not the only one who has this problem but is it really safe for my car to have this part if it could cause engine damage worse fire in that area due to a design flaw.

From a Hyundai dealership, I was sold a 2014 Hyundai Elantra in June of 2022 with a ticking noise. I was told it was normal and would go away with driving over time. It had not. I had the vehicle assessed by a reputable mechanic and then towed to and reassessed by a different Hyundai dealership. Was told the engine has piston slapping and engine is bad (by both). After a year and a half of back and forth, Hyundai has refused to repair or replace the engine or replace the vehicle since I’m not the original owner and it was sold over 100,000 miles on the vehicle. I paid a little over $13,000 for a rock that doesn’t drive. I don’t have $7,000 to replace an engine and I’m on a fixed income. There are lawsuits in other countries, just not in the USA yet. I need help please. The contact stated that the manufacturer has denied assistance due to an expired warranty and prior authorization being denied as well.

When Ever I turn my steering I hear a rubbing noise. Upon online research it sounds like a steering (MPDS) bearing is worn. Sound it makes is getting worse. I fear if my steering will eventually freeze while driving. Manufacturer had a technical service bulletin for other year models but not for 2013 Elantra and they do not sell bearing alone. Was told they sell entire steering column assembly. No warning lamp/ messages earlier. I did have issue with worn steering coupler which I just replaced and still have this other problem.

The engine in my 2013 Elantra started making noises and the car stopped while my son was driving. He was able to get it to a nearby parking lot. We ended up driving it 1 mile to the mechanic who said “it might be time to get rid of this car”. It needs a new engine. Mechanic talked to the local Hyundai dealership, gave them the VIN and dealer said I would likely be eligible for an engine replacement under a recall or a factory warranty. I towed it to the dealer to do their own “diagnosis” before they could give me the official word that my engine would be replaced. Dealer kept my car for five weeks. They ultimately provided an estimate of $3K worth of repairs that have little to do with the engine failing. I'm not sure they even looked at the engine. They told me the car has too many miles and would no longer be eligible for an engine replacement. I ultimately had the car towed back to my mechanic. The mechanic is estimating about $8K-$10K worth of parts and labor to replace the engine. The mechanic does not suggest using a used engine. My car is displaying the same issues as the other engine recalls, but my particular model is not covered (yet). The 2014 Elantra is part of the engine recall. My 2013 Elantra is not covered but is still displaying the same symptoms, and the engine knocking noise and engine failure are the same. The "Check Engine" light is on. I have this car parked in a parking garage, unable to be driven, while I pay off the remaining balance to Carmax. My mechanic says it could "blow up" if I drive it, and at a minimum, the engine can fail while driving causing a safety risk to the driver and passengers and any surrounding vehicles or pedestrians. I can provide mechanic's contact information if needed.

On 4/3/2023, our 2017 Hyundai Elantra was taken to Bob Howard Hyundai in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to diagnose why it kept dying after putting gas in it. It was eventually serviced on 4/17/23 by determining they needed to replace the intake camshaft oil flow control valve, as well as a synthetic oil change, including filter and gasket-engine oil plug. Almost three months later, on 8/20/23, in Tulsa, the car just stopped running suddenly, with no active warning lights, and we found it had completely spewed out all its oil! My [XXX] son could have been killed had it happened on the highway! We had it towed to Danny's Auto Repair in Sand Springs, OK. They determined the oil drain plug had completely fallen out while driving, causing the total oil loss- and resulting in the car to come to a stop, and the engine to be ruined. They documented the undercarriage of the vehicle to show there was no other damage, and after contacting our extended warranty plan we had purchased, we were told this was not covered under the warranty. Danny's then contacted Bob Howard Hyundai in OKC, explained the issue, and Bob Howard's requested the vehicle be towed to them as they would need to see for themselves. We had it towed 108 miles back to OKC. After inspecting the vehicle, Bob Howard's contacted Danny's on 9/5/23 to inform them/us, they are NOT responsible for the engine. We sent certified letters to both Bob Howard and to Hyundai Consumer Affairs, and they opened case #[XXXXXXX]. They said Bob Howard would have to address the issue & they would follow up with them. They did, and Bob Howard again said not responsible. We reported to Better Business Bureau, and have left a message for an attorney to review the circumstances. Then today researched several Hyundai lawsuits about this same issue hundreds of other customers have had. Nothing has been done. Hyundai won't take responsibility.
