The steering wheel of my 23 Honda Civic EX sticks. It feel like teeth in the steering wheel. At lower speeds it's very simple to do a slight turn of the steering wheel and feel it "click". At higher rates of speed, the steering wheel sticks and I can literally take my hand off the steering wheel and the car will continue its turn as the steering wheel looks into place. This has caused me to fight the steering wheel and not veer into another lane or oncoming traffic. No lights illuminate and trying to get to the dealership to have it looked at. This has been an ongoing issue but more prominent today than it has been. Research online shows Honda knows about it but isn't fixing the problem and my VIN isn't in the range of steering columns they are fixing for other issues.

At approximately 15,000 miles we started noticing steering issues. We've had the steering wheel lock up on the highway. I was attempting to make a minute correction to stay in my lane and was unable to move to the steering wheel. I had to grab the wheel with both hands and jerk forcefully to free the wheel up. Most of the time the steering issue is more subtle. Varies between momentary locking to momentary steering lash. The dealer stated no service bulletins or recalls affecting my VIN. No vehicle warning lights associated with the steering issue. I have not yet had the dealer test drive it. I feel the issue is too subtle most of the time for someone who had not been driving the vehicle since new to notice.

This steering wheel is having a “sticky steering” problem. The wheel tends to get ‘stuck’, and the steering wheel needs more adjustment to correct the issue, however, another overcorrection is needed to compensate the initial steer, which increases the likelihood of an accident. I have not had an accident, but I have had 2 close calls with other vehicles on the highway. I will cite the most recent one below. The dealership has reproduced my issue and is planning on implementing a fix. I have provided the dealership Service Bulletin 23-037. No warning lights/lamps illuminate whatsoever. According to the car, this is treated as ‘normal’ behavior.

While driving felt the steering wheel stick when the wheels are straight and in order for me to get back control I have to jerk it left or right but as I am driving doing that car feels like I’m constantly moving from the sides of the lane not straight anymore. At first it was highway speeds but notice yesterday that it’s at lower speeds as well. It feels like the steering wheel just gets stuck when you get your steering wheel straight, all I have to do is jerk it a little but that doesn’t seem right, had the car brand new and never felt this until 2 days ago.

The contact owns a 2023 Honda Civic. The contact stated that shortly after the vehicle was purchased brand new, the vehicle would start independently and the doors would unlock independently. Additionally, the contact stated while at a complete stop at the traffic light, the auto Stop-Start feature was engaged. The contact stated that the vehicle accelerated independently, causing another vehicle to crash into the rear driver's side door of the vehicle. There was no warning light illuminated. On the driver's side, the roof-rail air bags deployed. The contact stated that he was able to exit the vehicle. The contact was able to drive the vehicle. A police report was filed. The contact stated that the collision might have increased the intensity of the injuries he had sustained from a previous accident. The contact did not seek medical assistance. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they could not determine whether the failures occurred due to the vehicle's computer system being hacked. The vehicle was not diagnosed and repaired. Additionally, the contact stated that the steering wheel was pulling to the left and the right while driving. The contact stated that while driving 20-25 MPH, the vehicle made an abnormal grinding sound. The contact stated that while pulling into the nearest parking lot, the vehicle made an abnormally loud popping sound. The contact stated that he engaged the electric parking brake and parked the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the ball joint was fractured and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 200.

When I am driving at highway speeds in a lane on a straight path the steering wanders from center. When I attempt to correct there is resistance in the steering wheel. I have to "push through" the resistance at which point the steering obstruction suddenly clears and if I am not ready for it the sudden lightness of the steering can sometimes cause me to overcorrect. As I return to center coming from the other direction I again encounter resistance in the wheel at center. This only seems to happens when the vehicle is driven straight, in turns at surface street speeds there is no detectable resistance and the wheel turns smoothly. The effect is quite pronounced at highway speed and does occur at lower speeds on surface streets when driving straight but is much less noticeable.

Issue with the steering wheel. It was hard to drive the car because steering wheel did not let me keep the car straight and ever turns, the steering wheel would fight me pushing it back which put me and others at risk where I almost hit someone. Took the the Honda dealership where I bought the car. First time that I took 12/20/23. Explained to the servicer advisor and he said it was due to a recall. Servicer advisor said it was fixed. After the 1 day driving the car, the issue was still there. Checked the inspection report and it said that according to the EPS gearbox part number/serial number label was not effected so no repair necessary. Had to take again to the dealership on 12/27/23 where they found that the issue is a manufactured part defect and they have not been able to fix it due to not having the parts and waiting for American Honda.

PLEASE SE CASES 14345966, CASE 14345965 AND CASE 11565182.The report submitted verbally to NHTSA CASE 11565182 took place on 01/12/2023 at approximately 12:17pm. At one point, I requested from Ms. Lisa (NHTSA assistant) to read again back to me the particular report and she did. Consequently, I realized some miss interpretations. Therefore, I’m submitting this new information in order to be as accurate as possible. At approximately 49000 miles the air conditioning was checked and presented low in fluid. The system was refilled and the same problem reoccurred at approximately 52000 miles. On 12/29/2023 the vehicle was brought to be checked at Freeway Honda. The vehicle presents several different air conditioning leaks according to freeway Honda. It follows: A. Leak at A/C CONDENSER WA B. Leak at A/C COMPRESSOR SH C. Leak at EVAPORATOR. At one particular point, freeway Honda indicated that 2 of out of the 3 leaks would be covered under warranty. The particular freeway Honda dealer refused to fix the 2 A/C leaks unless if I would pay out of pocket the amount of $1,929.89+TAX to fix the 3rd leak as well. Furthermore, they charged me the amount of $175.00 to check for the leaks which should be covered under extended warranty. THE CAR HAS FACTORY A/C PROBLEMS PREVIOUSLY REPORTED BY THE HONDA AUTOMOBILE DIVISION. THERE ARE MORE PROBLEMS WHICH ALSO EXISTS AND IT SHOULD BE TAKEN UNDER CONSIDERATION. INITIALLY, HONDA STARTED EXTENDING WARRANTY FOR THE AIR CONDENSER. THEN, FOR THE COMPRESSOR. HOWEVER, THERE IS MUCH MORE. “The Civic AC systems are allegedly unable to withstand the pressures when circulating the R-1234yf coolant. Multiple air conditioning components allegedly cannot handle the pressure, including the condensers, compressors, evaporators and discharge and suction lines”. than the current used refrigerant, it is potentially dangerous as it is flammable and ignites 405 º C. When flammable- it also emits hydrogen fluoride- DANGEROUS SUBSTANCE FOR THE HUMAN HEALTH.

Steering becomes “sticky” after driving 15 minutes. It is mostly noticeable at highway speeds. It requires extra effort to make small corrections but then releases and causes over correction. It has not been inspected but after doing research it appears to be a common problem.

When driving the vehicle in a straight road. While attempting to keep the vehicle in the center of the road the steering wheel is “sticking” and I have to apply a little more force to get it to counter steer to keep the car aligned.

My civic has steering problems. It’s sticks in place and at times appears to float. Its unsafe to drive. Honda Dealership evaluation shows the steering rack and components need replacing. Parts on back order due to this happening everywhere to 11th gen civic owners. I’m told it will be the end of April 2024 before part availabile due to demand, that’s 3-4 months away, my car sits undriveable! My concern is they replace steering rack with same faulty products and it happens AGAIN when out of warranty.
