Upon acceleration the engine began to sputter with a clanking noise. After turning around to pull back into my drive way the engine began to work properly. I had the vehicle towed to Master GMC Augusta,GA. After the car was at the dealership for several days, I was told the issues could not be duplicated and there were no error codes. While returning home from the dealership the car began to sputter and decelerate at this time multiple lights flashed on and off on the dash including the check engine light. As I pulled to the side of the interstate the car once again corrected itself and all lights went out. I reached out to the dealership again. The car was returned to Master GMC again. This time I was notified the engine had failed due to metal shards in the engine. Since this vehicle had only 4988 miles at the time, and I had a 2021 Suburban prior with lifter failures, I was hesitate to keep this vehicle. I did trade the 2023 Yukon XL Denali at the time of engine failure.

Engine failed during trip on interstate without warning after 23k miles. Car went into neutral and we were without power. We coasted to side of road and had to be towed. Dealership has ordered new engine which will be covered under warranty. There were no warning lights before, during or after the incident — no check engine light. The only indicator is that car started making a rattling noise from the engine a few seconds before we lost power.

1. My engine failed at 10,000 miles, seized up completely. 2. Safety was a HUGE risk factor as the engine went out while driving 65 mph in a dangerous canyon highway, which made me lose control of being able to drive the vehicle to safety as I was needing to coast to the top of a hill and then coast down to even find a safe spot to pullover. My safety was also at risk because it then left me stranded in a canyon with no cell service where I was (and I couldn't even connect via OnStar because of the area I was stuck in), leaving me stranded for over 3 hours in 100 degree weather with no place to hide from the heat in the middle of summer. I also had my [XXX] with me and thank God we made it out of that situation alive. And thank goodness for bystanders I don't know what I would've done without them. 3. Yes, an engine replacement was made via warranty, but the new engine still make clunky/grindy sounds and even after having that looked at, I was turned away because apparently there were no performance issues but I still feel like I cannot rely on the vehicle especially driving longer distances. 4. Yes. see comment for #3. 5. NO warnings AT ALL were ever on my dash regarding my engine going out. There was never a check engine light prior to the engine seizing, nothing. So how was I supposed to know my engine was going to give out on me at only 10,000 miles? Regular maintenance was kept up to date. It just went out randomly with no warning. Driving at highway speeds at night when engine sputtered, vehicle shifted itself into neutral and shut engine down. Slight difficulty steering for 1/4 of a mile with traffic continuing to pass at full highway speeds but was able to coast to a side road. No warnings of failure or check engine lights prior to event. Had just stopped for gas continued on trip and cruising about 77mph and hear a few noises as if vehicle ran our of gas and dash lit up letting me know it was shutting down, then shifted to neutral. Now dealing with GM travel interruption team and being told that it is engine failure due to faulty lifter/rod/bearing issue with no timeline as to when an engine replacement will be available. It has been inspected and confirmed by GMC service department in San Angelo TX

My wife was driving down the road with my Daughter and the engine simply stopped running without warning. She was able to coast to a stop on the side of the road and engage her hazard lights. When she tried to restart the engine it just cranked but never started. We had it towed to a mechanic and the mechanic told us that the engine is seized and we likely need a new engine, total cost of over $20,000. This vehicle should not be having this type of issue at 70,000 miles. If they were on a busy highway in the middle of rush hour it would have been a very dangerous situation.

Car shutdown and shifted on its own down to neutral from drive. Was driving on highway. Never was able to shift to another gear after pulling over. Computer board was completely blank. Engine would never restart. This is the second engine to go out in this vehicle.

In July of 2023, my wife and kids were driving to San Diego from Phoenix. About 40 miles west of El Centro, CA, all the lights on the dash came on instructing her to pull over. When she pulled over and shut the car off, it would not come back on. Got towed back to a GM Dealership in El Centro. The diagnosed it with a bad radiator and failed engine. The replaced both(at roughly 30,000 miles). The car was fine for about six months and then it started getting battery drains again, which continually happened starting a few months after purchasing the vehicle. They never could figure this part out. Anyway, early January of 2025, while driving back to Phoenix from San Diego, the car did the same thing. This time, it restarted and she could continue on her way home. On [XXX], while driving in town, the same thing happened, all lights came on, pulled over and car would not restart. It is diagnosed with the same issue. It has been in the shop at Van GMC since January 12th, 2025 waiting on a new engine, at 63,000 miles. This will be the 3rd engine in the vehicle. By looking online, this appears to be a common issue and happens more than it should. This needs to be addressed. My wife has our kids in this vehicle a majority of the time and this is a major safety issue. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

While driving down a two-lane highway, the vehicle unexpectedly lost power and shifted into neutral. We coasted to a stop and pulled into a driveway, at which point the vehicle would not restart. The vehicle was towed to the local GM dealership, where we were informed that the engine required replacement.

Traveling North bound on Highway 14 in Southern California on January 24, 2025. In the fast lane traveling approximately 70MPH when with no warning what so ever the vehicle shifted into neutral and lost power. Nearly rear ended trying to get out of traffic and to the right shoulder. Once stopped the vehicle would not start, stuck in Park, and could not turn the electronics off. Stuck in vehicle for 3 hours because it was too dangerous to exit vehicle. Tow truck arrived. Tried to jump the battery which by this time was dead. Had to drag the vehicle up the flatbed with wench do to vehicle unable to shift out of Park.

I purchased my new GMC Yukon XL in October 2024. In February, with about 9,000 miles on it, I was approaching a highway intersection and beginning to brake. My vehicle put itself into Neutral, and then shut off -- while I was still moving. No dash lights came on, except for a message stating that I needed to press the brake and restart my vehicle. I took my vehicle into the dealership where I purchased it and they kept it for 8 days. They were unable to reproduce the issue and didn't do anything to mitigate the problem except for doing a "radio update" and adding lubricant to a window track. I was told I have to wait until it happens again and try to record it.

I was driving down the highway at 75 miles per hour and my engine shifted from drive to Neutral on its own, luckily I was able to get off to the side of the road as it would not shift back into drive. I got off the highway and was able to put it in park but it would not shift into any other gear. I turned the vehicle off and it would not power back on. It was completely dead. I had to have it towed and drug up onto truck and back off the truck as it was not shift into Neutral. It has now been at the GM dealership for 16 days. The engine had seized they said and needs a new one. this is a 2023 and only has slightly over 20K miles on it. They have told me there is a national shortage on engines and I am in line to get one but there is no telling on how long that will be. I am out of a car for 2 weeks and who knows how much longer. GM has given me a rental car but a very small SUV that does not fit my family. I have no idea how long it will be nor do they until I get a new engine in my vehicle. I was fortunate I was able to get to the side of the highway and stop safely.

Our car has 66,000 miles on it. My wife was driving it we have never hooked a trailer to it. Never done anything but drive our kids around go run errands in it. The motor seized and left my wife stranded. The car has been fully serviced ahead of schedule every time And very well taken care of it still looks new, but the dealership is now telling me the motor and the transmission possibly are bad and I’m only 6000 miles past the factory warranty. There’s no reason for this motor to have failed or the transmission as the car has never seen any hard service and has only seen normal paved roads and running errands and dropping kids off. The dealership said it’s going to cost around $16,000 to fix both the engine and the transmission out of nowhere the motor just seized with no warning and no noises

On [XXX] while driving my 2021 GMC Yukon Denali to work, the vehicle suddenly lost power without warning. I had it towed to the dealership, where I was informed that the fuse pack needed replacement. Less than 36 hours after getting my vehicle back, I experienced another critical failure—while driving, the traction control light and check engine light came on, and the engine began making a loud clacking noise. Upon returning it to the dealership, I was told that the vehicle required a complete engine replacement. Prior to this incident, my Yukon had no known mechanical issues. However, despite the vehicle being only three years old and under GMC’s 5-year/60,000-mile PowerTrain warranty, the failure occurred at 65,722 miles—just over the coverage limit. GMC has acknowledged nearly 900,000 reported issues related to this engine defect, yet instead of issuing a full recall, I was only offered 60% coverage, leaving me with over $5,000 in out-of-pocket costs for an issue that is clearly a widespread manufacturing defect. I purchased this vehicle for its reputation of reliability and safety, especially as the primary mode of transportation for my family of five, with no nearby relatives to rely on. Given the known defects, it is unacceptable that GMC has failed to take full responsibility. I am formally requesting that GMC cover the full cost of the engine replacement and issue a recall to prevent other consumers from experiencing the same failure. While driving, vehicle threw an error “ reduced acceleration, drive with care”. I had my children in the car when the car abruptly reduced speed and car jerked. It was very scary while driving. It was stuck in 5th gear. I was taken to dealership. Code showed it needs a Transmission Valve Body replacement. Part # 24065353. Dealership has stated part is “on backorder with no ETA of the part”. My car has been sitting on the lot for 17 days waiting to be fixed.

2023 Yukon XL AT4 with 6.2L engine. [XXX] started to hear rattling noise coming from the engine area. I took the vehicle to a GMC dealer in Houston TX. The dealer diagnosed the problem as a defective transmission plate? Said they would have to order the part. Part arrived and while at the dealer they decided to inspect the oil pan. In the oil pan they found metal shavings. It was reported to me yesterday [XXX] that the engine would need to be replaced. This vehicle has roughly 17,000 miles and it’s been just over 1 1/2 years since purchased brand new by me. No confirmation of when a new motor will be available for replacement. Was told it could be months. Was also told that the vehicle is unsafe to drive since the engine could lock up at any time based on their findings. Total engine failure at 12,307 miles without warning. The engine turned off while driving on the Interstate - a message appeared on the instrument panel that said "Press start". We coasted to the shoulder and the car was towed to the dealership where the diagnosis was a failed L87 V8 engine. I'm aware of 3 others with the same engine (2024 Denali, 2024 Escalade, 2024, Silverado) that have also experienced this issue. After some research, this appears to be under review by the the NHTSA. This was a dangerous situation with an engine failure at highway speeds, at night, on an unlit well-traveled Interstate with 4 children in the vehicle. The dealership stated that my repair is behind 2 vehicles awaiting the same engine replacement.

While driving on the interstate at 75mph the vehicle shutdown and would not allow a restart. I had to coast over to the emergency lane with no engine power. Once stopped the vehicle would not start. After having the vehicle hauled to the dealership I was informed that the engine had locked-up and a new engine would have to be ordered and replace the engine. The dealership could not provide me with a repair date because they said GMC has lots of problems with this engine and it would be backordered.
