I have a failure occurring with the air bag system in my 2015 GMC Terrain SLE. There seems to be other air bag issues with this vehicle. This is yet another problem. I am aware that there is a technical bulletin that the manufacture has published concerning the failure I am experiencing, but there appears to be no recall. Specifically, I have a service air bag light on in the vehicle. The problem has been diagnosed to be the failure of the air bag passenger presence module. Since this is a safety feature, it seems it would warrant more than a technical bulletin.

The contact owns a 2016 GMC Terrain. The contact stated while driving approximately 45 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power and stalled. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the timing chain had failed, and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The local dealer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 104,000. The contact was instructed to take it and have it diagnosed by the dealership he bought it from so I spent more money to have the garage take it on their roll back and drop it off at the dealership. The email stated I needed an engine with a $9000 estimate.

- #11567946January 26, 2024ENGINE, SERVICE BRAKES, STEERING
On Friday, January 19, 2024, I was driving home from school at night in my 2017 GMC Terrain when suddenly my car was chugging and quit. my steering and brakes froze. Other cars were passing me and it was snowing. I was scared someone was going to hit me. I was able to start it up again and to get it to a Walmart parking lot just down the road, but before, it would chug and quit again. My steering was hard. There was no warning light or service light on dashboard telling me something was wrong. I called my sister to come get me. The car would start, but would keep quitting. I called a tow truck and had it towed to the condo. The next day, I went out to start it and it would start and oil light came on. It smelled. I turned it off. I called another tow truck and had it towed to a Mechanic at a shop. He informed me on Monday that the engine was no good due to lack of oil. Even though he said there was 15% left on the gauge. He said these cars have had problems of using excessive oil and he has had to replace and fix them. He also said others had same issue and no warning light as well. I have to replace my engine. He said the cost would be between $5000-$6000. I can't afford that going to school. I'm afraid that if someone else has this problem they could get hurt. I am going to contact General Motors about this, but I'm sure they won't help. Any Suggestions?

In certain makes of General Motor vehicles there is a defect with the PCV system in which the system can freeze in cold temperatures which in turns causes excessive crankcase pressure in the engine, and can lead to a dangerous loss of motor power due to this defect. The dangers of this defect can be catastrophic to myself and others on the roadway as the loss of motor power can happen suddenly and can happen while the vehicle is being driven. General Motors has released many service bulletins regarding this specific defect. The most recent service bulletin that was issued was GM January 2019 Bulletin PIP5093C, so they are aware of this dangerous problem in these vehicles. For my vehicle I have had a certified GMC dealership diagnosis the problem, and submit their findings to General Motors. There were not any warning lamps, messages, lights, or symptoms signaling that there was a problem prior to the occurrence on January 15th, 2024.

My 4 cyl. AWD GMC Terrain has had excessive oil use which caused premature failure of the timing chain, loss of power/compression, blown engine, damage to exhaust manifold, cellinoids, and melted the catalytic converter. Its was a road safety, poor emissions due to failed catalytic converter. Headlights are too bright for oncoming traffic at night. Another road & safety hazard. Auto warranty is refusing to cover parts listed above caused by the timing chain and excessive oil consumption problems.

Heard a ticking noise coming from the engine compartment. I opened the hood to investigate which I first check oil level as sounded like a lifter making the noise but all fluid levels was normal. I drove home and 3 miles later ticking noise went away and my adaptive brake assist came in and the brake pedal was hard to press. Luckily I lived another mile down the road so I got the car home and safely parked it. One of the symptoms is hearing a ticking noise from engine when a braking component fails. Further learned could be a vacuum issue which needs a software update which makes no sense. Had I been traveling highway speeds when this happened this story could have a had a very different tragic ending. Car has less then 53000 miles on it

I just had an oil change in late December of 2023. As I was driving to work on [XXX]. My engine locked up. There were no warning lights. By the time I was able to pull over, a rod had gone thru the engine. Apparently there was an oil leak but no warning lights. This has not only caused me to have to purchase a new engine but could have resulted in a collision while driving. After doing some research this is a known defect by GM and a class action lawsuit. GM has failed to recall these vehicles for a known defect. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The contact owns a 2022 GMC Terrain. The contact stated that on four occasions while driving with the Adaptive Cruise Control function engaged, the vehicle shut off unintendedly. The Adaptive Cruise Control was set to 76 MPH and the vehicle decelerated to 34 MPH in several seconds. The contact stated that the steering wheel became inoperable. After several attempts, the vehicle restarted and drove at approximately 18 MPH. The contact stated that the vehicle entered Auto-Stop Mode. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact called the local dealer but the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and opened a case. The approximate failure mileage was 6,000.

Driving down the road yesterday and outta nowhere I lost power and got a low oil pressure warning then the car just shut off merging onto a busy highway. Blown rear main seal and locked up the engine with no warning. Only 65k miles on the car. Dealership wants to charge me 11k to replace the engine. This is a very common occurrence with this vehicle I’m reading now. This could’ve caused a major accident

My vehicle keeps showing “service brake assist” and “service TSC” lights. I was on a hill and the auto-start was engaged, as well as hill assist. When I let off the brake pedal slightly to get the car to come out of auto-start, the car acted like it completely shut off (radio went black and lost power) and the car just started rolling backwards quickly. If there was a vehicle behind me it would’ve %100 caused an accident. My wife and child ride in this car every day and this is the second time I’ve had serious issues with this car. The first time I was driving down the interstate and the brake vaccuum pump went out and I lost all brakes, I had to put all 180lbs of my weight on the brake pedal to get it to stop.

Vehicle started leaking oil with no indicator. Didn't realize it for at least a few days. When I smelled a burned oil smell took it to the repair shop. Was told my oil gasket blew and the engine is about shot. I also only a month earlier replaced the battery. These vehicles apparently have known battery, oil and engine issues that were known since 2010. The following class action lawsuit in Missouri is pending: [XXX] , on behalf of herself and all others similarly situated, Plaintiff, v. GENERAL MOTORS LLC, Defendant. _____________________________________ Our vehicle is not even at 100,000 miles! This will cost thousands of dollars to fix or we will need to purchase a new vehicle which we didn't plan on for a few years at least! This has been devastating. Please help. While driving my 2022 1.5L Turbo GMC Terrain at 65 mph with the air temperature at -2 degrees below zero Fahrenheit the check engine light came on with the error message "Engine Power is reduced." I coasted to the side of the road and put the car into park. I was 200 miles from home and after working with my insurance roadside assistance, I wasn't able to get a tow truck after 3 hours of waiting in sub zero temperatures. I called the local GM dealership in my home town to ask if I could drive the SUV and they said I could at less than 35mph. I drove 100 miles to a town where a tow truck was available. I brought the SUV to the GM dealership and they said the issue is ice and condensation in the inner cooler CAC system. They said my SUV wasn't updated for the cold weather package. I was told my engine needed a cold weather package in order to drive it in sub zero temperatures. After reviewing this issue online, I found there was a recall for 2018-2022 1.5L Turbo GMC Terrain vehicles that experience these issues but my VIN number wasn't included in the recall. I called GMC to report the issue with my SUV and after speaking with multiple people was told that it wouldn't be covered under the recall due to the "numerous factors" that determine what VIN numbers fall into a recall. My SUV has the same engine, is the correct year, and has the same engine problem as the GMC Terrains that were included in the recall. I now have to pay out of pocket for repairs and the engine fix of installing a cold weather package that is covered under the recall. I believe the recall needs to be expanded to additional VIN numbers.
