Roughly every 8 months Sirius XM "radio" runs an automatically triggered free subscription period that includes "weather alerts". These alerts BLOCK part of the car's normal navigational (map) system, requiring UNNECESSARY MOVEMENTS to dismiss the prompts so one can see map details. These movements RISK DRIVING MISTAKES. The weather alerts are unhelpful and unwanted: trivial events that don't affect me. And they keep repeating the same alert multiple times per day. I once called Sirius tech support to have them shut that feature off, but they claimed they couldn't, and to just wait out the promotion period. Sirius XM comes with the car and I can't remove it. I suspect the prompts are a marketing gimmick to trick people into sampling their music channels when they fiddle in the Sirius menus trying to turn off the alerts. Others on social media have reported similar problems in different car models. (PS: I bought the car used in 2019.)

I was leaving work when my car had trouble accelerating from stop. The engine revved, but the gear would not engage. It happened several more times after I stopped at a light or slowed to get on the highway. It would take a minute or so to engage, and then I could drive the car, but it made it dangerous when trying to merge on to the highway or to make any turns in to traffic. It then happened two more times as I slowed to make turns until my engine light came on as I was turning on to my street. When I finally made it to my house and put it in reverse to back into my driveway, the car wouldn't move at all. I took it to the GMC dealership because it is still under warranty. The next day when I called, they told me a piston shot through the transmission housing which caused a leak of transmission fluid. There is a GM Customer Satisfaction Program release for 2024 GMC Terrains and Arcadias that all have a defect in the transmission housing, which is causing a leak of transmission fluid. I had noticed that, whenever I slowed to make a turn anywhere prior to the engine light coming on, there was some hesitation when trying to accelerate, but I thought it was the design of the transmission and engine.

I was driving down the highway between 65 and 70 MPH. The semi-truck in front of me almost missed his turn and stopped quickly to make a 90 degree turn off the highway. I went to slow my vehicle appropriately, and my brakes did not respond. I had no warning that my brakes were compromised. I quickly used the downshift button to use my engine to slow me down and I crashed my vehicle off the road into the sagebrush (luckily no trees and there wasn't a dramatic drop off). At that time, after my vehicle came to a stop, I received a warning on my dash that stated "service brake assist". I looked up the issue on my phone to see what may have happened, and read that GMC had a recall for this very issue. I contacted the dealership and they indicated that they were aware that the 2018 GMC Terrain has this issue, but it was not included in the recall. I am traumatized by this incident. I am a very experienced driver, but I had bought this vehicle for my daughter, had she been driving, this would have been a catastrophic accident. I have nightmares about if this had failed when approaching a crosswalk or in a school zone. If GMC is aware of the problem, and they had a full recall on this on other models with this same problem, why aren't they fixing the Terrain, why are they waiting for a fatality. It is unacceptable, dangerous, and I don't even want to know what the cost is going to be to repair the vehicle. I am thankful it wasn't much worse.

The contact owns a 2019 GMC Terrain. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH, the brake pedal was depressed, but the vehicle failed to stop immediately. The contact slammed on the brake pedal, and the vehicle came to a stop. The contact coasted the vehicle to the median. The vehicle was restarted and driven to the residence. Upon inspection, the contact noticed that the brake fluid was dark in color. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the vacuum pump had failed and exploded in the camshaft. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, where it was determined that the vacuum pump, camshaft, valve cover gasket, and water pump needed to be replaced, along with an oil change. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

While driving at approximately 55 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled and would not accelerate. I was able to pull over onto the shoulder and turn the vehicle off. The engine would not turn over and the brake pedal locked into position, rendering the vehicle immobile. The check engine light also came on at this point. The vehicle was towed and ultimately repaired at the local GMC dealership, where the fuel pump was replaced. The 2022 GMC Terrain already has a recall in place due to the fuel pump module not providing sufficient fuel to the engine, resulting in an engine stall (23V013000), the effects of which sound very similar to what occurred. However, this vehicle’s VIN was not included in the recall. We are very lucky that this failure did not result in a crash, and that no further incident occurred while we were stranded on the side of the highway during the night, waiting for a tow.

ON [XXX] my spouse was driving her new 2024 GMC Terrain in Asheville, NC. When suddenly the car stopped and when was able to maintain control and coast to a safe area. The vehicle was subsequently taken to the dealers service center GMC Asheville, NC (Harry's on the Hill). The diagnosis was determined to be a defective a transmission valve body. In discussion with the dealer service manager he indicated this is a common occurrence with the valve body. Needless to say this defect can be fatal especially during inclement weather, fast speeds, winding narrow mountains roads! As of 15 May 2024, the dealer, GMC nor the manufacturer of the valve body has not provided a replacement part for this vehicle. The contact owns a 2022 GMC Terrain. The contact stated while driving at approximately 60 MPH, the vehicle stalled. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer to be diagnosed. The dealer replaced the fuel pump module. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred while driving on the highway, and the vehicle was towed to another dealer. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the fuel pump module had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact researched online and related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V013000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 4,800.

When shopping for a new Vehicle I noticed this but purchased the vehicle anyway. I attempted to look under the hood of my new GMC Terrain. I have a (hopefully temporary) handicap from a medical procedure I have been dealing with for over a year. I found that the hood assist springs or air shocks have been eliminated from the 2024 model. I can lift the hood on my 2010 GMC Sierra, but I had to have my wife help me lift the hood on my 2024 Terrain. My guesstimate is the hood weighs 50 plus pounds! Once the hood is lifted you have to install a rod (stick, like the old Model A and T cars) so the hood stays up. Yes, I am aware that Ford and Jeep have done this too, but that still doesn't make it right in my view. In this day and age of vehicle safety, and adding safety features to vehicles that I would never even have thought of, I can't believe this is OK! I can only imagine a mechanic bumping the hood rod, or a small child reaching up to boost themselves up to see what Dad or Mom is looking at or doing under the hood of the vehicle. This would cause a 50 plus pound hood to come crashing down on a person and that is OK? How about a short or elderly person? How much did the car manufacturers save by eliminating this feature at the consumers safety and cost? Maybe the manufacturers don't want us under the hood anymore, but then they will have to find a better way to add windshield washer fluid or check the oil or brake fluid.

The contact owns a 2015 GMC Terrain. The contact stated that after starting the vehicle, the message "Power Reduction Mode" was displayed, and the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that after restarting the vehicle, there was a ticking sound coming from the engine compartment before the vehicle stalled another time. The vehicle was towed to the local mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the engine timing was faulty, and the engine had experienced a loss of engine compression. The contact was advised to contact a local dealer for service. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer and local dealer were not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 160,000.

The brakes stop working, they get really stiff and locks in the middle of the highway, very hard to stop and almost caused an accident, it is not the first time, the vehicle was serviced by an authorized mechanic and the problem had been resolved until today, the brakes locked and almost caused me to loose control of the vehicles brake system.

The contact owns a 2020 GMC Terrain. The contact stated that while driving 50 MPH, the vehicle lost braking power. The driver was able to pull over safely. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the vacuum pump had shattered. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The contact reached out to a GMC engineer, who informed the contact that the failure was due to the camshaft reluctor. While driving, the vehicle lost engine power. The vehicle was towed to the same local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the throttle body needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the turbo code had a mass air flow sensor failure. The vehicle was repaired. While driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light illuminated, and the reduced engine power message was displayed. There was blue smoke detected from the exhaust. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who informed the contact that the throttle had failed. The vehicle was towed to another local dealer, Power GMC Chevrolet of Newport (1422 N Coast Hwy, Newport, OR 97365) where it was diagnosed that the air pipe charge and air cooler needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to the local dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.

Took vehicle into dealer for a recall on October 17, 2023 with the recall being [Primary]: RECALL : C/S: N192268181 -TAILPIPE EMISSIONS - EXHAUST COMPONENTS: C/S: N192268181 -TAILPIPE EMISSIONS - EXHAUST COMPONENTS. The dealership did an excellent job on the work providing a video to show work being done. Now this month of April, I received another check engine light stating the P0013 code stands for “Exhaust “B” Camshaft Position Actuator Circuit/Open (Bank 1).” There is not a recall from the manufacturer but according to dealership they've received a bulletin in regards to this issue. According to the dealership it will cost in excess of $500 to repair. Absolutely not true. There are a thousand videos on what causes this and even how to repair it from the same mechanics that work within these dealerships. This issue is a safety issue because if not repaired it causes damage to your engine. This code lets you know that you will start experiencing loss of power, trouble starting your vehicle, the stalling/picking up speed all at the same time. Some of these issues have been caused from the issue of the oil consumption problem associated with the Terrain's.

2013 GMC Terrain with 109000 miles. Check engine light came on. Drove to local independent repair shop to have codes checked and to have oil changed. Oil was due to be changed at 109000 miles. Repair shop showed oil was down over 3 quarts even though they found no leaks. All engine codes had been set by low oil. They changed oil and filter (twice) and performed complete oil system cleaning and ran diagnostics. They asked my to watch oil consumption and bring it back in 500 miles. The next day, the check engine symbol came back on so I took vehicle back to repair shop. Error codes now all pointed to timing chain problem. It would be $1500 to $2000 to replace timing chain. Vehicle not repaired since I recently had suspension work and also replaced exhaust system.

The 2.4-liter engine contains a defect that causes them to improperly burn off and consume abnormally high amounts of oil. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Excessive oil consumption cannot be reasonably anticipated or predicted and causes the engine to run while low on engine oil, putting me and other drivers at risk due to engine fire, unexpected engine failure, vehicle jerking, power loss, etc. Yes, both certified dealers, independent service centers, and myself have observed and noted the low levels of engine oil as soon as 500 miles after an oil change. I have spoken with GM representatives via phone about the issue, but they are not interested in inspecting the vehicle or offering driver support. They have consistently denied awareness of an issue despite hundreds of documented complaints and a pending class action lawsuit in the state of Missouri. There are no warnings, messages, or symptoms prior to discovering low engine oil levels. This issue requires drivers to self-monitor the issue every 500-1000 miles and requires an excessive number of oil changes to keep the vehicle at a safe level of engine oil for operation.
