SERVICE BRAKES, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING
I am leasing a 2025 BMW X7 vin number ([XXX]) through BMW Financial Services. The vehicle has had an active federal safety recall since approximately February 2024, and as of today, the manufacturer has not provided a remedy to address the issue. The recall is listed on the NHTSA website but remains unresolved for over 17 months, despite my attempts to obtain information and updates from both the dealership and BMW directly. I believe this is a violation of my consumer rights under the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act and breach of warranty, as the vehicle has a known safety defect that the manufacturer has failed to repair within a reasonable time. I am requesting assistance in: 1.Reaching a resolution with BMW to either terminate the lease without penalty, or 2.Compelling the manufacturer to provide an immediate remedy. This recall impacts the safety and use of the vehicle, and I am concerned for both my safety and the financial obligations tied to a defective product. BACK OVER PREVENTION: WARNINGS
Vehicle Information: Make: BMW Model: X7 Year: [2025] VIN: [XXX] Component/System Involved: Parking Assistance / Automatic Parking System / Sensors Summary of the Issue (Complaint): On [XXX], while using the Parking Assistance feature on my father's BMW X7 (VIN: [XXX]), the vehicle malfunctioned and caused an accident inside our home driveway. While the system was guiding the vehicle into the garage—as it has successfully done many times before—it suddenly and erratically turned the steering wheel to the right, failed to stop, and struck another parked vehicle. There were no sensor warnings, no audible beeps, and the system did not engage the brakes to avoid the collision. My father was attentive and had to manually slam on the brakes, but the impact had already occurred. We reported the incident to our local BMW dealership and BMW North America. However, the response has been extremely unsatisfactory. A BMW engineer claimed the system was “working as intended,” even though the erratic behavior and failure to stop contradict that claim. Representatives implied the system requires full attentiveness, but my father was alert and monitoring the process. No one from BMW has taken responsibility, and they have refused to assist in repairing the vehicle damage caused by their system’s failure. This incident highlights a serious safety issue with BMW’s Parking Assistance system, which can misbehave even when used correctly and attentively. It poses a danger not just to property but potentially to people. I am filing this complaint in hopes that NHTSA investigates this matter further. EXTERIOR LIGHTING
After purchasing this vehicle I took the car in for PA state inspection at Joel Confer BMW in State College, PA to find out that he passenger side front headlight needs to be replaced. The reason for the replacement is because the LED running light has burnt out. Not only has the daytime running light burnt out but it was has burned out the module for the light. Because the module is also burned the entire headlight needs to be replaced at a cost of $8000. BMW will not cover this repair. My car is has approx 28k miles on it. My car is out of warranty as of October of 2024, but well within the mileage warranty. This is a safety hazard as the headlight needs to fully operable to pass PA state inspection. There were not any indicators of the problem before taking the vehicle in for state inspection.

BACK OVER PREVENTION: REARVIEW SYSTEM BRAKING
I am filing this complaint regarding a persistent safety issue with the rear cross traffic alert (RCTA) system in my 2022 BMW X7. The system consistently fails to detect approaching vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists unless they are within approximately two feet of the rear of the vehicle. This extremely limited detection range renders the system effectively useless for its intended purpose of preventing collisions while reversing, especially in environments such as parking lots, residential streets, and school zones. On multiple occasions, both my wife and I have experienced near accidents while reversing, including incidents involving moving vehicles and pedestrians—some of whom were small children at our child’s daycare. In all of these cases, the RCTA system failed to provide any warning or alert. This lack of detection poses a serious safety hazard not only to my family but also to those in the vicinity of the vehicle. Given that rear cross traffic alert systems are a key safety feature designed to reduce backover accidents, especially in scenarios where the driver’s visibility is compromised, I believe this constitutes a serious design or calibration flaw. I am concerned that this issue may not be isolated to my vehicle alone, and I urge the NHTSA to investigate this matter further to determine whether a recall or software update is necessary to correct the defect.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING
My complaint mirrors NHTSA ID Number: 11619581. I recently upgraded from a BMW X5 to an X7 and noticed significant dark spots on the road, severely reducing visibility in those areas. The headlight casing appears to have a design flaw, creating these dark, nearly invisible patches directly in front of the car. As the vehicle moves, the car’s vertical motion causes these dark spots to shift up and down, which is highly distracting and hinders the driver’s focus. With 25 years of driving experience, I have never encountered headlights that produce such a disruptive effect. When using high beams, the dark spots are lightened but headlights projects a horizontal dark line across the road, further worsening the distraction. BMW offers no adjustment options to mitigate this issue.

The vehicle had a spill in the cup holder. The cup holder has holes and does not hold liquid. This spilled into the electronics underneath and around it. The car suddenly could not be put into park. It would roll when attempting to do so. The electronics control park and the emergency brake from the same electronic panel. Preventing save disabling of the vehicle required chalking to prevent movement.

STEERING
BMW have designed the steering wheel adjustment with a feature that is a fundamental flaw and safety issue.They claim " to ease entering and exiting the vehicle, the steering wheel moves to the upper position - this is true and good. HOWEVER, THE DO NOT MENTION THE STEERING WHEEL ALSO RETRACTS INTO THE DASHBOARD TRAPPING THE DRIVERS LEGS UNDER THE STEERING WHEEL - THIS WOULD CAUSE A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE (POSSIBLY FATAL) FOR THE DRIVER TO EXIT THE VEHICLE IF INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT. This feature cannot be over-ridden and is activated as soon as the driver's door opens. I have contacted BMW Board of Directors and Senior Management and they refuse to change this feature. The retraction makes NO sense and benefits no-one and nothing. It is a design fault and dangerous. A simple two line code adjustment in their IDrive 8.5 Operating system would prevent the retraction and fix this issue. This could be down-loaded to vehicles in one of their next remote software upgrades. IGNORING SAFETY ISSUES PROVIDED BY THEIR CUSTOMERS IS NOT AN OPTION.

On [XXX], at [XXX], while driving at 65 mph on [XXX] between Chesapeake and Virginia Beach, VA, the front panoramic sunroof of my 2022 BMW X7 xDrive40i spontaneously shattered without warning. The sunroof and interior sunshade were fully closed, with no prior damage or warning signs. The glass exploded with a loud gunshot-like noise, causing glass to fall into the cabin. My wife, who was driving, was startled and jerked the wheel, nearly causing an accident. Conditions were clear, and no debris or impact occurred. The fracture showed outward bowing and horizontal cracks, typical of spontaneous tensile failure in tempered glass. No impact point was found. BMW acknowledged they have “seen this before” but denied my warranty claim, blaming impact with no proof. The tow truck driver also stated his company has towed at least two other BMW X7s recently with the same failure. I have found multiple similar complaints already documented in the NHTSA database, confirming this is not an isolated case. I am submitting detailed photographs and respectfully request a formal investigation into the safety and integrity of BMW’s panoramic sunroof design and materials. I am also filing a complaint with the Virginia Attorney General’s Office to ensure this issue is reviewed at both federal and state levels. While driving northbound on [XXX] near West Greenwich, RI with my wife and two young children, the front sunroof glass of our 2024 BMW X7 spontaneously exploded at highway speed. There were no overhead structures or nearby vehicles that could have caused an impact. Conditions were slightly rainy. Approximately one week before this event, the vehicle displayed a warning that the sunroof was “not initialized.” I followed the reset procedure, and the message cleared. It’s unclear if that alert was related, but the sunroof’s failure seems more than coincidental. The explosion caused loud noise, exposure to weather, and panic inside the cabin. Fortunately, the cloth sunshade was closed and minimized glass intrusion. We pulled off the highway, documented the damage, and temporarily sealed the roof using materials from a local hardware store. BMW has not yet confirmed whether this repair will be covered under warranty. We were forced to fly home due to lack of a functioning vehicle. I am reporting this because it was a serious safety issue that could have resulted in greater harm under slightly different circumstances. Please investigate this issue further as it appears similar to other spontaneous sunroof failures reported in recent years. The vehicle is a 2025 BMW X7 M60i purchased in New Mexico on [XXX]. The car's emergency call system and navigation became disabled on [XXX] after taking the vehicle to a car wash. Subsequently the car was brought to the BMW dealer for repairs; however, the problem recurred after several days, dashboard now showing a traction control warning light. Since the initial malfunction on [XXX], this car has been taken to the dealer for repairs on at least 3 different occasions, they have not been able to fix the problem. The car has remained in their shop since 02/28/2025, BMW dealer informed us that they are waiting to receive a "battery"; however, supply issues are to blame according to them. To date, the have not provided us with a concrete timeline regarding repairs and no clear explanation about the issue. This malfunction has been extensively documented in internet forums and complains regarding the issue are abundant. BMW and their dealers are fully aware of the issue. Our local BMW dealer advised us to bring the car to their own car wash after the initial malfunction, they are aware of the well documented defect in the fin antenna housing/sealant. There is even an ongoing class action lawsuit regarding this problem: [XXX] A malfunction of the emergency call system is not just an inconvenience, the defect poses a danger to drivers and occupants of the Class Vehicles and others who share the road with them, as water infiltration could result in the failure of vital safety equipment.
