2023-2026 Mopar IBS Faults: Warning Lamps & DTCs B2193, U113E, P00FD

Mopar has released Technical Service Bulletin S1408000384 Rev. I, effective February 2025, to provide critical information regarding the Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) system. This bulletin aims to help technicians and owners correctly diagnose and address various battery-related warning messages and diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) in 2023-2026 Mopar vehicles, including the 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale IBS fault.

The IBS is a crucial component that measures battery voltage, current, and temperature to estimate the battery's State of Charge (SOC) and internal resistance. Misinterpretations of IBS data can lead to unnecessary part replacements and persistent issues.

Symptoms of an IBS Fault

Owners of affected vehicles may observe one or more of the following symptoms related to an IBS fault:

• The "Start Stop Charging Warning Lamp Illuminated On" appears on the instrument cluster.
• An "Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) State of Charge (SOC) Inaccurate" condition is present.
• A "Battery Charging Message" is displayed.
• The "Battery Warning Lamp On" illuminates.
• Specific IBS-related Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are stored in the vehicle's modules.
• The Start/Stop (ESS) system may be inoperative, displaying a message like "Stop/Start Not Ready Battery Charging."

Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) Related to IBS

Several DTCs can indicate an issue within the IBS system or related components. It's important to understand which module sets these codes and their implications.

IBS Self-Recovery and Adaptation

In many cases, the IBS can self-recover from temporary functional software defects. This often occurs if the two-way connection to the IBS is cycled (reset or rebooted). After such a reset, the IBS will typically function normally again. However, it requires a quiescent (vehicle completely sleep) period of approximately 2 to 4 hours for internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to calibrate the State of Charge (SOC) to the connected battery.

For Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) or if learning occurs after using an external charger, the IBS SOC learning process can take up to 2 days. This adaptation process requires at least one engine crank followed by the specified quiescent time without external charging.

Important Warnings for Owners and Technicians

This technical bulletin highlights several critical points to prevent misdiagnosis and unnecessary repairs:

• Avoid Unnecessary IBS Replacement: "This document provides added information about the IBS to avoid incorrect and unnecessary IBS replacement." The IBS engineering team often finds no issue with returned parts. "A replacement IBS is not required on a vehicle without DTCs."
• Battery Replacement: "IBS DOES NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED WITH NEW OR RECHARGED BATTERIES." While the IBS itself might not need replacement, SOC adaptation may be required after a battery exchange.
• IBS Replacement Criteria: "The IBS should only be replaced if a DTC for the IBS is active."
• DTC P00FD: "P00FD is not related to the IBS. Never replace IBS for P00FD." This code is for the auxiliary battery's ECM diagnostic, not the IBS.
• Battery Charging: When charging the vehicle battery, "DO NOT BLIND CHARGE." This means you should "Do not put Negative clamp on IBS Pole clamp" and "Do not remove IBS for charging." Instead, connect the negative clamp to the body/engine ground.
• Battery Light Misdiagnosis: "A common misdiagnosis is Battery light illuminated. The IBS has NOTHING to do with this light. The battery Light is indicative of a 'CHARGING SYSTEM and condition of the battery.'"

Diagnosing IBS-Related DTCs

For a 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale IBS fault, specific diagnostic steps are outlined in TSB S1408000384 Rev. I based on the DTCs present.

DTC B2193: Intelligent Battery Sensor Internal

If an active DTC B2193 is observed, technicians should reset the IBS by cycling its 2-way connection. After resetting, start the vehicle and wait for approximately 30 seconds. If the DTC clears or changes to a stored DTC, the same IBS can be retained. If an active B2193 persists, then the IBS should be replaced.

DTC U113E: Lost communication with intelligent battery

An active DTC U113E indicates a defect in the Local Interconnect Network (LIN) bus, which the Body Control Module (BCM) monitors when the ignition is on. This issue can stem from a wiring defect in the LIN bus (short/open circuit), a blown IBS fuse, or, in rare cases, an internal IBS or BCM hardware/software defect.

U113E DTC Root Cause Inspection:

1. Read vehicle DTCs while the ignition is ON.
2. Wiggle the IBS 2-way harness takeout (LIN and IBS feed takeout) and monitor the state of DTC U113E. If this action affects the DTC's behavior, the issue likely lies in the harness.
3. Verify power to the IBS by back-probing pin 2 (RD wire) of the IBS 2-way connector. If voltage is below 11.8V, follow standard low battery procedures.
4. Verify the IBS feed fuse state and replace it if necessary.
5. Verify LIN bus activity using a Mopar scope, configuring it for LIN monitoring if feasible. Replace the IBS only if confirmed by the LIN diagnostic.

Understanding DTC P00FD

DTC P00FD is set by the Engine Control Module (ECM) and relates to the auxiliary battery. It triggers if the ECM detects a voltage difference between the auxiliary and main batteries that exceeds an allowed limit. Importantly, this DTC is not related to the IBS, and replacing the IBS will not resolve a P00FD code.

Proper Battery Charging Procedures

Incorrect battery charging can lead to further issues. When charging a Mopar vehicle, ensure the negative clamp is connected to the body/engine ground, not directly to the IBS pole clamp. The IBS should not be removed for charging. After charging, IBS State of Charge (SOC) adaptation is necessary, and the IBS will self-adapt during the next available quiescent state.

New IBS Installation and Calibration

If a new IBS sensor is required, it must be installed onto a fully charged battery. After installation, allow the sensor to read the SOC for up to 4 hours without any added system loads. To improve calibration accuracy, perform 3 to 5 drive cycles, each followed by an 8-hour key-off period. This process allows for proper adaptation of the battery sensor's State of Charge (SOC) and State of Function (SOF).

Proper IBS installation involves placing the IBS onto the negative battery post, pushing it down until it's properly seated, fastening the ground terminal to M8 with 7Nm +/- 2Nm torque, and securing the M6 pole clamp with 7Nm +/- 1Nm torque.
