2022-2024 Dodge Hornet / Alfa Romeo Tonale R1H Radio Software Update

Symptoms

Owners of affected vehicles may experience one or more of the following issues with their Uconnect system. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms with your Dodge Hornet R1H radio software, a software update is available.

• The "Speed limit sign on Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) is showing incorrect speed."
• The touchscreen may experience "Touch freeze/Disassociated Center Stack Display (DCSD) off."
• There may be "CP/AA wireless disconnection" for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto (CP/AA).

Cause

The root cause of these symptoms is identified as needing software improvements for the R1H radio.

Important Warnings for Owners

• Display Screen Module (DSM) Update: The Display Screen Module (DSM) must be updated to the latest available software level before the radio update is performed. Failure to do so "may result in a blank/black screen."
• USB Device Interference: "Make sure no other device is plugged into any of the USB ports while performing this re-program. If other devices are connected to USB ports during re-programming, it may cause failure of files to be loaded which may cause the radio to need replacement."
• Ignition During Update: "Do NOT turn the ignition off until the two minute timer has expired." during the initial update phase. Also, "Do Not turn off the vehicle when the software update is completed and told to remove the USB flash drive." and "Do Not turn off the ignition at this point" until the radio restarts and the home screen is displayed.
• Error Message: If you see the "Uconnect Error Code: SWITCH - INVALID_BINARY" message after a successful radio update, "Please ignore this error message and press 'OK' to continue." It does not indicate a problem.

Diagnosis and Repair Procedure Summary

If a customer reports any of the symptoms listed above, a technician will use a scan tool, such as wiTECH, to verify that all related systems are functioning correctly. If other Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) or symptom conditions are present, they must be addressed before proceeding with this bulletin.

The repair, as outlined in TSB 08-161-24, involves updating the R1H radio software to version T27.52. This process requires a 64 GB USB flash drive, preferably a quality, name-brand one like Kingston. The Display Screen Module (DSM) software must be checked and updated first, if necessary, to prevent issues like a blank screen during the radio update.

Technicians will download the necessary software files from DealerCONNECT, specifically selecting the MAC version regardless of the computer's operating system. The downloaded software is then transferred to the 64GB USB flash drive, which must be formatted to NTFS. The USB drive should contain only one .zip folder in its root directory, which should not be unzipped.

Once the USB is prepared, the vehicle's engine is started, and the USB drive is inserted into the USB port. The Uconnect system will detect the update, and the technician will initiate the process by pressing "Update Now" and then "Continue." During the update, the system will display messages such as "New software and features are ready for your UConnect system. Backup Camera, Radio, SOS, and several driving assistance features will be unavailable during the update" and "Updating... Do not remove USB Device. System will reboot and start update. Backup Camera, Radio, SOS and several driving assistance features will be unavailable during the update." The update can take approximately two hours.

After the update is complete, the system may display an "Update Successful. Please remove USB device." message. If an "Uconnect Error Code: SWITCH - INVALID_BINARY" message appears, it should be ignored by pressing "OK." The technician will then verify the radio software version, perform a factory reset, and allow the vehicle's modules to enter sleep mode before clearing any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) that may have been set during the reprogramming process.

• Diagnostic Tool: wiTECH or equivalent scan tool.
• USB Flash Drive: A 64 GB USB flash drive (Kingston brand recommended).

Warranty Information

This service is reimbursable under the provisions of the warranty. Dealers must use failure code CC (Customer Concern) when processing claims for this Technical Service Bulletin. The labor operations and associated times are:

• 18-60-03-AZ: Create USB Jump Drive from Uconnect Website (One Time Only) - 0.9 Hrs.
• 18-60-03-BA: Reprogram Radio Software - 1.4 Hrs.
• 18-60-03-BB: Reprogram Radio Software and Display Screen Module (DSM) - 1.7 Hrs.

If your 2022-2024 Dodge Hornet or Alfa Romeo Tonale is exhibiting the symptoms of incorrect speed limit display, a frozen touchscreen, or CP/AA wireless disconnection, contact your authorized dealership. Reference TSB 08-161-24 when you schedule your service appointment. The software update is performed under warranty.
