Vehicle Information: Make: Kia Model: Sorento Year: 2020 VIN: [XXX] Mileage: ~80,000 miles Complaint Summary: I am filing a complaint regarding excessive engine oil consumption in my 2020 Kia Sorento. The vehicle burns oil between regular oil changes, requiring frequent top-ups. There are no visible leaks, and this consumption poses a serious safety risk, including potential engine failure or fire hazard. Detailed Description: I purchased the vehicle used from a Kia dealership. I requested an oil consumption test from the dealership, but they refused, stating the vehicle is out of warranty. I contacted Kia Consumer Affairs, and they also refused to authorize the test or provide assistance. This engine issue is widely reported by other owners of the 2020 Sorento and similar Kia vehicles, particularly those with Theta II / GDI engines, which are known for oil consumption problems. The vehicle has approximately 80,000 miles, and the oil consumption is significant enough that I must frequently add oil between changes, creating a safety concern. Actions Taken: Requested an oil consumption test from local Kia dealership — refused. Contacted Kia Consumer Affairs for assistance — refused. Maintained detailed records of oil use and maintenance. Request: I request that the NHTSA investigate this oil consumption issue for my vehicle and the 2020 Kia Sorento model line. I also seek guidance on any recalls, service campaigns, or safety actions related to this defect. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

1) My vehicle incurred catastrophic engine failure. The engine stopped running suddenly. It does not crank over. It is available for inspection. It does not run. 2) I am thankful that no one was injured and that the vehicle did not catch fire. 3) There is a safety-related defect in certain 2017 Kia Sorento vehicles. 4) My vehicle was towed to the house and has not been inspected. 5) There were no signs of leaking oil or oil burning. No dashboard lights came on to signal overheating or low oil level. No check engine light ever appeared.

My engine was replaced under the Kia PI1802Y/Z Engine Replacement Program in July of 2024 in August of 2025 after the replacement I began to smell gas in my vehicle and took my vehicle to the Kia dealership to find out what the issue was. They informed me that it was a fuel pump leak due to bad gaskets. I believe the engine replacement was done improperly and should be under the SC172 High Pressure Fuel Outlet Recall Campaign. I have reached out to Kia and the dealership. The dealership is being less than cooperative and Kia is not addressing the issue specifically. The gas leak was significant and was potentially dangerous. It would fill up my entire garage with fumes.

We have a 2016 Kia Sorento that has the Snow White Pearl paint. Our vehicle has a tad over 100k miles and the paint is peeling. We take care of our car and always have it clean and do not understand why this is happening. Paint is flaking / peeling off in large amounts exposing the primer underneath. I had a body shop look at it and they say it looks like something went wrong with the painting process when vehicle was made. I have a 1997 ford ranger that has 280k miles on it without this issue so I do not believe that this is a mileage / age issue. I did reach out to kia but had no luck with this problem. Thank you so much for your time and any help is greatly appreciated.

The contact owns a 2019 Kia Sorento. The contact stated that the oil level was constantly checked since purchasing the vehicle. The contact stated she was aware of the oil consumption because the oil had to be topped off after each oil change. The contact stated that there was no warning light illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to the dealer where the vehicle was purchased. The dealer performed several oil consumption tests, and confirmed that the vehicle was consuming an excessive amount of oil. The contact was informed that a local Kia dealer was contacted and informed the dealer where the vehicle was purchased, to allow the owner to drive the vehicle until the engine failed and then have the vehicle towed to the Kia dealer for evaluation. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 112,000.

Knocking noise started when pulling off the interstate. No engine light came on. No oil registered on 'dip stick'. Oil change was due at 130,449. The mileage on the car was 132,635. Had towed to Kia dealership where they said there was no test that could be done due to the vehicle being a 6 cylinder engine. They said the 'sound' points to needing an engine replacement. I inquired about a oil pressure switch test and oil consumption test due to past recalls and known engine issues. I was told due to the car being out of powertrain warrenty they would not perform such tests. I have video that shows the car is burning oil. Visible out of the exhaust. This is not something I was aware of until after this incident. These are the same issues as noted in previous recalls. Dealership said would need full engine replacement.

On July 5th 2025 round 5:15 pm EST, while driving in the center lane of the highway at approximately 73 mph, the check engine light and multiple amber warning lights suddenly turned on. This occurred at just 1,920 miles on a brand-new vehicle. At the time of the incident, the vehicle stopped responding to the accelerator and would not move forward. Fortunately, traffic was light, and I was able to steer safely to the shoulder. However, I was traveling with my family, and under heavier traffic conditions or with vehicles closely following, this sudden loss of power could easily have resulted in a serious multi-vehicle accident. Following the above incident, I brought my vehicle to the Kia dealership for a diagnostic check. However, they did not take any corrective action, stating that the check engine light was not currently illuminated—even though I provided photo evidence and the fault code P069811 captured from the Kia app. This raises serious concerns, as I cannot predict when the issue might occur again. According to multiple reports on Kia forums and blogs, many owners of new vehicles have experienced the same problem, yet Kia has not addressed it. This is a serious, life-threatening safety issue while driving, and this trim should be publicly acknowledged as having low reliability and safety concerns until a resolution is found.

The contact owns a 2021 Kia Sorento. The contact stated that while driving approximately 10 MPH over a speed bump, the vehicle shut off. The contact was unable to pull over to the side of the road. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with a bad connection at the fuel pump fuse box. The dealer performed a minor wiring repair. The contact stated that while driving 60-80 MPH, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended, and the vehicle shuddered and then jolted. The vehicle was taken to Calavan Kia [XXX] ), but the failure could not be duplicated; however, the coils were replaced. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, several unknown warning lights were illuminated, and the vehicle was inoperable. The contact stated that upon restarting the vehicle, the warning lights were turned off, and the vehicle operated as needed. The contact also stated that the vehicle was making an abnormal rattling and ticking sound while driving. The vehicle was taken back to the second dealer, where the failure could not be duplicated; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to a third dealer, Ed Voyles Kia [XXX] ), where the failure could not be replicated. Additionally, the contact stated that A/C system was inoperable. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 6,099. My Sorento has a transmission issue or something similar. It slips, it dies down and sometimes when I come to a stop and try to move, it won’t move. I have to put it back in park and then put it in drive. I have had several near miss accidents due to all these issues. It has been repaired twice but it has never fixed the issue and the dealer claims there is nothing wrong.

Engine burns oil excessively and Kia has this marked as a known issue. The oil is leaking inside the engine around the pistons and into the combustion chamber. Because the engine is direct injection, it now has to go through a combustion cleaning every time this happens at $700 a pop plus diagnostics which makes it over $900 every time this happens. Happens so often that it won't even get to the milage for an actual oil change to be due. Kia refuses to do anything until the connecting rod or connecting rod bearing fails and I have a complete engine failure. I feel like that is very dangerous and could cause serious harm to myself or others if I have an engine failure and cause an accident.

Prior to the below incident, my vehicle was driving normally. Oil levels were normal, and there were no warning lights. In June 2025, I was driving on [XXX] during morning rush hour. As I approached a traffic light at the end of this 3-lane expressway, the engine suddenly stalled. I rolled up to the red light. When safe to do so, I left the vehicle to stand on the side of the road so as not to get hit. I had the car towed to a local repair facility. Repair shop looked at the vehicle and determined that the engine was seized. They then checked for TSB's and discovered that Kia had, in some instances, extended the warranty to 180,000 miles and 15 years. My vehicle had 142,000 miles. I then had my car towed to the closest Kia dealer in Hickory, NC. The dealer initially indicated it was possible my car would be covered by the extended warranty, but they needed to run pressure tests to determine the cause of the engine seizure. Over the next 2 weeks, I called the dealer repeatedly, but they had no update for me. After about 2 weeks, they told me that my vehicle would not be covered by the extended warranty, and a new engine would cost me $15,000. I then called Kia Customer Care, and the representative told me there was nothing they could do. I asked about an appeals process and was told there is none. After I returned from vacation in early August, the Kia dealer contacted me and requested that I pick up my vehicle. I drove to the dealer and called a tow truck to bring it to my home. I rented cars at my own expense from the time of the engine failure until I bought a new car in mid-August. Shortly thereafter, I arranged to sell the Kia to a used car dealer for $1,500, far less than I would have received with a healthy engine. At that point, I needed to get the car out of my garage. While cleaning out the car the night before it was to be picked up, I opened the hood and found that the engine had been left disassembled with parts lying all over the place. I get an error message on all the forward collision and lane departure system. A mechanic has looked at this and they cannot determine the issue. They say maybe the front cameras are acting up but the car has never been in a accident that would impact the cameras. In addition the drivers mirror will not reset from the reverse setting to drive mode. When driving it needs to be manually adjusted each time in order to see.

At highway speeds and in windy conditions, both side view mirrors partially fold inwards obstructing the ability to check blinds spots. The vehicle was purchased new from a dealership a month ago. The dealership has been notified of this issue as well as the check engine light being on since the vehicle was 5 days old and we were told they are unable to take the vehicle in until they have a loaner car available. Attached are two images of the driver's sideview mirror showing the approximate distance the mirror folds inwards with little effort.

My sorento started smelling like gas , inside & outside. Worse when I stop driving. The fuel pump pressure hose (that’s in a compartment under my backseat) is spraying fuel everywhere inside the compartment it in. The safety for myself and my grand sons that are all 2years old (3 of them) is we are inhaling the fumes from it separating steadily out under the seat their car seats are sitting on. I have not taken my vehicle to anyone but my friend after seeing a video of why a guys vehicle smelled like gas No inspection has been done by anyone I’m not even sure what steps I need to take or what to do now. There were NO messages, lights, etc., that flashed or popped up on my message center. It just all of a sudden one day started smelling like gasoline in my car. While driving on September 15, 2025, the vehicle displayed a loud beeping and the warning message “Check Hybrid System. Stop Safely.” The vehicle restarted about an hour later, but the combustion engine ran very rough. The Kia dealer inspected it but reported no stored error codes. On September 23, 2025, the vehicle suddenly lost power while driving. It appeared to operate only on electric at low speed, then died completely in the roadway. The vehicle would not power down until the start/stop button was held. It required a tow back to the dealer. Prior to the first incident, a faint electrical smoldering odor was present. The vehicle remains at the Kia dealer for evaluation. This is a serious safety concern because the vehicle experienced sudden loss of motive power and stalling in traffic, which put both myself and others at risk.
