Nissan has released Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) NTB22-027B to address a specific diagnostic trouble code (DTC) related to the Telematics Communication Unit (TCU). This bulletin, an amendment to previous versions NTB22-027 and NTB22-027A, details a procedure for technicians to clear the DTC B2E01-96 when it is stored as current in the Intelligent Vehicle Communication (IVC) system. This TSB applies to numerous 2020-2024 Nissan models equipped with a factory-installed SOS switch and NissanConnect® Services. If you own a Nissan Sentra B2E01-96 issue, this information is relevant.

Symptoms

Owners may not notice any direct symptoms for this particular issue, as the DTC B2E01-96 specifically indicates an "INTERNAL BATTERY" problem stored within the Telematics Communication Unit (TCU). The TCU is responsible for telematics services like NissanConnect® Services, which provide security and convenience features. The presence of this DTC suggests an internal fault within the TCU's backup battery system rather than an immediate operational failure that would be apparent to the driver.

Fault Codes / DTCs

The primary diagnostic trouble code addressed by this TSB is:

Code Description Module
B2E01-96 INTERNAL BATTERY IVC (Intelligent Vehicle Communication)

Diagnosis / Trigger Conditions

This TSB specifically applies if DTC B2E01-96 is found to be Current/Active in the Telematics Communication Unit (TCU) and no additional Current/Active DTCs are present in the TCU. If additional DTCs, other than B2E01-96, are present in the IVC, technicians are instructed to refer to the Electronic Service Manual (ESM) for further diagnostic information and repair those other issues first. The TSB notes that diagnosis and repair of DTCs other than B2E01-96 are not covered by this bulletin.

Important Warnings

Nissan provides critical warnings for technicians during this procedure to prevent damage to vehicle components:

  • "If the vehicle battery voltage drops below 12.0V or rises above 13.5V during reprogramming, the TCU may be damaged." A battery maintainer or smart charger set to reflash mode is required.
  • "If a vehicle electrical load remains ON, the TCU may be damaged." All vehicle electrical loads must be turned OFF.
  • "If the CONSULT PC battery voltage drops during reprogramming, the process will be interrupted and the TCU may be damaged." The AC Adapter must be connected to the CONSULT PC.
  • "If Bluetooth® signal waves are within range of the CONSULT PC or VI during reprogramming, reprogramming may be interrupted and the TCU may be damaged." All external Bluetooth® devices (e.g., cell phones, printers) must be turned OFF.

Repair Procedure Summary

The repair procedure involves using the Nissan CONSULT diagnostic tool to perform a TCU Backup Battery Reset. This process requires several preparatory steps to ensure the diagnostic equipment and vehicle are properly configured and powered.

  1. Preparation: Ensure the CONSULT PC is synchronized (updated) with ASIST and all CONSULT-III software updates are installed. Connect a battery maintainer or smart charger set to reflash mode to the vehicle. Turn OFF all vehicle electrical loads and connect the AC Adapter to the CONSULT PC. Turn OFF all external Bluetooth® devices within range.
  2. Initial Setup: Confirm the CONSULT PC is connected to Wi-Fi. Turn the vehicle's ignition ON and connect the Vehicle Interface (VI) to the vehicle. Start CONSULT-III.
  3. CONSULT-III Navigation: If prompted, select "USA/CANADA Dealers" and then "OK". Log in using NNAnet credentials. Wait for the VI to be recognized, verifying the serial number displays (Figure 1). Verify the correct VIN or Chassis # is populated (Figure 2) and select "Confirm".
  4. DTC Confirmation: Select "Diagnosis (All Systems)". Confirm that DTC B2E01-96 for "Internal battery" is "CRNT" in the IVC (Figure 3). If other DTCs are present, refer to the ESM first.
  5. TCU Backup Battery Reset: Select "Work support" (Figure 4). From the list, select "TCU Backup Battery Reset" (Figure 5), then select "Start".
  6. Monitoring Reset: Verify that the "Current status" indicates "Waiting" (Figure 6), and then select "Start". Once the "Current status" changes to "Completed" (Figure 7), select "End".
  7. DTC Erasure: Select "Self Diagnostic Result" and confirm that DTC B2E01-96 "Internal battery" is "PAST". Then, select "ERASE" (Figure 8).
  8. Final Check: Select "Diagnosis (All Systems)" again (Figure 9). Confirm that DTC B2E01-96 "Internal battery" has not returned. If it returns as "CRNT" or will not ERASE, refer to the ESM for further diagnostic information. Finally, select "Home".

Technicians will need a properly updated CONSULT PC, a Vehicle Interface (VI), an AC Adapter for the CONSULT PC, and a battery maintainer or smart charger. The Primary Failed Part (PFP) for claims information is the Telematics Control Unit (part number 28275-*****).
