Engine fails to restart after the Auto Idle System shuts it down, leaving vehicle stranded in traffic. The issue is sudden and unpredictable, and may not appear in inspection. A stalled car in live traffic is a safety concern. The vehicle is at a dealer for diagnosis and repair. No warning appeared before the problem began happening. (About 5 times in 2.5 months.) Sometimes when it occurs, a brief error message seems to appear on the dash, but quickly disappears. It usually takes cycling through restarting the car to get going again. Not a good environment to stop and take video, although it's almost impossible to record.

Yesterday my 2024 Odyssey auto stop engaged and the car wouldn’t restart in the traffic light. I had to turn the car off and try twice before it would restart.

The Auto Idle/stop caused my engine to stall not once but twice in the past few weeks while on a major highway. Light turns green and my car won't start back up. I have to let the car sit for a second then restart the car while traffic is flying past me on this highway. Absolutely ridiculous that my brand new car is having these issues and that I am unable to turn this feature off permanently.

- #11744403June 16, 2026STEERING, LANE DEPARTURE: ASSIST
While driving straight on the highway on a sunny day the car left the lane on it's own, resisted attempts to get it back into the lane, and crashed into the concrete barrier after we swerved around and the car bounced around. Lane keeping assistance and automatic cruise control were active. The lane lines looked perfectly fine. A couple minutes before the accident the car left the lane unexpectedly but we were able to get back into it. Before going on the trip we took the car to the dealer and complained about issues with the car not starting after it shut off while idle at stop lights, or not starting properly, like engaging the parking brake and getting stuck, or starting and rocketing forward even when I only pressed lightly on the gas, leading to loss of traction. They checked the car and said everything looks fine and the tires have 5mm of tread and don't need to be replaced, and they rotated the tires and changed the engine oil. I'm not sure if the issue was with the power steering failing, or traction being lost, or the sensors having an issue causing the car to think the lane was somewhere else and not letting us leave where it thought the lane was. Driver has tons of bruises still and it's been over a week. The other 4 passengers seem ok. The insurance company said the car is totaled and is taking possession of the car. The only warnings lights or messages the car gave us before the accident were about the car having an issue starting back up when all the cars were beeping behind us when the light turned green, and messages about loss of traction, mainly after the engine started back up.

- #11744106June 15, 2026ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
I am filing a complaint regarding recurring electrical and infotainment failures involving my 2020 Honda Odyssey EX-L. The vehicle experiences loud static and speaker distortion, infotainment system instability, static noises when turning the steering wheel, and intermittent key fob recognition issues requiring the key to sometimes be held near the start button. The issue appears to happen more often during or after rain or moisture exposure. The dealership has already repaired/replaced the FAKRA connector or related infotainment connector multiple times, yet the issue continues returning. The dealership recently witnessed the malfunction themselves and acknowledged the problem is still present. I am currently waiting for further direction from Honda technical support. This appears to be a widespread issue. There are many Reddit discussions and Honda owner Facebook groups where owners describe identical symptoms and repeated failed repairs. Some owners report having the same FAKRA connector replaced as many as six times with the issue still returning afterward. The repeated failure of the same repair raises concerns that the current remedy is ineffective and that there may be a larger electrical, wiring, grounding, or moisture intrusion issue involved. Because this problem continues after multiple repair attempts, I am requesting that NHTSA investigate recurring electrical and infotainment failures in Honda Odyssey vehicles and the repeated failure of the current repair solution.

While waiting at a stoplight, the auto idle system engaged and turned off the vehicle's engine. When attempting to continue through the intersection, the vehicle failed to start again. The only way to restart the engine was to place the car in park and push the stop/start button again. This caused a safety issue because I was in the middle of traffic at an intersection, and was expected to move. Thankfully the vehicle restarted without requiring any further intervention, and as a result the vehicle was not inspected by police or insurance representatives. This exact problem was previously addressed by Honda under a recall. During that time, they performed the software update as necessary, however that obviously did not remedy the problem. After returning my vehicle to the dealer, Honda has verified that my vehicle did experience this event and now says that it will need a new starter at a significant cost to me. I am dismayed by the fact that Honda Technical Service Bulletin 23-009 addresses this exact problem, including a warranty extension for a starter replacement, and yet is not applicable to the Odyssey model. There was no warning or indication that this incident was going to occur, and until the starter can be replaced, the only advice given by Honda was to disable to auto idle system (which must be done each and every time the vehicle is turned off/on).

Our vehicle has stalled at stop lights several times over the past 6 years. The auto stop/start feature seems to fail. The vehicle will shut off but when you repeat the brake it will not restart and the vehicle will die completely. You have to put it in park, wait a few seconds and try and restart. Additionally it has completely died at gas station after turning it off to refuel. When you go to start the vehicle it will be completely dead, zero power. We had to have it jump started. The battery has been replaced twice and was testing normal at the dealership. Not a battery issue. Honda acts like this is unheard of but our own research indicates it is a common well known problem with new Odyssey models.

Stopped at a stoplight, the engine will just die. It won't start again by pressing the gas peddle. It will require a few moments to try to restart it. It is very stressful and dangerous when people are waiting behind you. This is not safe. It won't happen every time but the few and far between are not good. We have replaced the battery and it sounds like other people have had this problem but no recall has been made to fix it.

I am reporting a critical safety issue regarding the auto-start-stop system on my 2025 Honda Odyssey. On June 15, 2026, the vehicle's engine shut off at an intersection as designed but failed to restart, stranding the driver in active traffic and presenting a severe safety hazard. I previously brought the vehicle to an authorized Honda dealership approximately two weeks prior to this incident after noticing early symptoms of this failure. At that time, the dealership diagnosed the issue as low battery voltage and replaced the battery; however, this repair did not resolve the underlying fault. The vehicle continues to unexpectedly stall during traffic stops due to the auto-start-stop failure, representing an ongoing and significant danger to the vehicle occupants and other motorists.

Engine will fail to start when shut off to stop light or when shut off at anytime when engine is hot. Very dangerous situation. Acts like starter is dragging. There is a clunking in the steering column when making a turn mainly to the left that can be felt in the steering wheel. Driver seat is splitting open on the side. Keeps setting code p0441 for evap system..

The vehicle engine developed a rod knock at around 105,000 miles. Failing connecting rod bearing(s) has been diagnosed as the source of the sound by several different mechanics independently, including the Honda dealership, and engine replacement has been recommended. This first occurred while I was away for an extended period on military orders. My wife, not realizing what the sound was, continued driving on it for 1-2 weeks. Fortunately, no accident occurred, but at any moment the engine could have seized, causing serious bodily harm or death. Leading up to this issue, there had never been any check engine lights, low oil or low oil pressure warnings, or any such notifications that this issue was developing. Oil changes were performed regularly without any concerning oil quality findings. There is a known connecting rod/bearing safety recall involving my make, model, year of vehicle, but Honda is telling me the manufacturing date is not applicable. Despite my formal requests, Honda has been unwilling to acknowledge and help rectify the issue. I submit that the defect in manufacturing is more widespread than they are owning up to.

For a couple of weeks we have been having issues with our 2018 Honda Odyssey's back right door. When you go to open it, something happens where it makes it shut after fully opening. Our resolution for the time was to just push on the door harder and it would continue to slide open. Today, on XXX I was going to put my [XXX] son in his carseat, which is located mid van right side. He snuck infront of me and was standing in the path of the sliding door, it did what it normally does, the same door did not detect his body and began shutting on him. As it was squeezing his shoulders I was pushing back on the sliding door with all my strength, and after a few seconds it opened back up. I'm not sure whether the sensor failed, or it can't detect past a certain height, but either way it was a very scary situation. This had just happened an hour ago, so I haven't reported it to any authorities or anything. I came home and googled how to make a manufacturer report and it lead me here. If I had not been standing behind my son, I believe the door would have continued shutting more, enough to sustain serious injuries if not more. My son physically was okay, aside from a red mark on his upper arm where the door was shutting on him, he did need at least 5 minutes of consoling after, which only happens when something truly hurt him. NHTSA Complaint Narrative – 2020 Honda Odyssey VIN: [XXX] Beginning in 2021, the vehicle experienced repeated starter and idle stop system failures, including: •delayed starting •failure to restart after idle stop •multiple warning lights •intermittent no start conditions •repeated battery failures The earliest documented complaint (Culver City Honda, March 25, 2021) states: “When using the auto start/stop feature the vehicle will have multiple warning lights. Sometimes will struggle to turn back on.” These symptoms continued for several years despite multiple dealer visits, battery replacements, electrical diagnostics, and software updates. In late 2025, the starter failed completely and required replacement at a cost of $1,890.25. The failure of the idle stop restart system poses a safety risk, as the vehicle may fail to restart in traffic after stopping at an intersection. Honda has refused to provide any written response regarding the issue. I am submitting this complaint so NHTSA is aware of the repeated failures and the potential safety implications. All ADAS functions stopped working on my 2019 Odyssey during a 6 hour drive to the beach with my family of four. It appears that the multipurpose camera has failed. Some reading online suggests that this is a known thermal defect, and Honda has yet to remedy the issue. Instead opting to let the consumer replace these units at $3k per.
