On April 13th, 2024 our son was driving the family 2018 Honda Odyssey (Approx 83,000 miles) in a nearby city. He was driving at 43 mph when the vehicle shifted from drive to neutral without his shifting it. He tried to brake using the brake pedal but was unable to stop or slow the vehicle. He also tried to accelerate and was unable to accelerate the vehicle. All the lights on the dashboard lit up and he was forced to use the emergency brake to stop the minivan. A good samaritan stopped and assuming that the battery was the problem, tried to help jump-start the vehicle -- but they were unable to start the car. Our son called us, and I drove 20 or so miles to his location. After trying a jump box in the vehicle, we called AAA. After trying a jump start and a new battery, At this point the technician said that the vehicle would need to be towed. The transmission of the minivan appeared to be locked and the towing company was not able to find a means to unlock the transmission. As a result, the front tires were placed on skids, which allowed the minivan to be drawn up onto the bed of the tow vehicle and towed the vehicle 20 miles to the local dealer, which had originally sold us the vehicle and had completed all recent maintenance. On Monday, the Honda service technician assessed it. We were advised that the 2018 Odyssey would require a new engine. After involving American Honda, we learned that the transmission was also affected, and the car would need to have $28,000 of repairs. After a month of discussions with American Honda, they closed our case without a teardown to identify root cause of the event. Our son could easily have been killed by being in a vehicle that could not be controlled while it was moving down the street. He used the only means available to him to stop the vehicle – the emergency parking brake. American Honda has told us that we must pay the $1600 to tear the engine apart to learn the cause. We have more history than can fit here.

The contact owns a 2019 Honda CR-V. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle lost motive power while depressing the accelerator pedal. The contact repeatedly pumped the accelerator pedal before the vehicle surged forward and resumed normal operation. No warning light was illuminated. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to a dealer. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and test-driven; however, the failure could not be duplicated. The contact was informed that because there was no warning light illuminated, the vehicle could not be diagnosed. The contact then received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) which was linked to the failure. The dealer was made aware of the issue and the contact was informed parts were not yet available for the recall repair. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the repair. The failure mileage was unknown. Parts distribution disconnect.

Nothing has happened, yet, but we've received multiple recall notices from Honda who refuses to fix the problems. They keep claiming they don't have the parts, and it's been six months since you issued the recall. Why do we have to keep driving a car that could fail at any time? Why don't you force them to fix all the recalled cars? The recall number is 23V-858. Thank you for whatever you can do to get Honda to fix our Odyssey.

Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) Road Departure Mitigation System (RDM) Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) We have not taken it into Honda yet as it's out of warranty and the fix is replacing/reaiming the Carmera that is located near the rear view mirror. The car has been scanned with a scan tool and it comes up with errors regarding the front camera MCU. Upon inspection the front camera is extremely hot to the touch. The errors sometimes stay on for weeks & may go off for a minute or two then come right back. Without this functioning properly the above car features (which can be safety releated) do not work & does effect the safetly of passengers in the car. It is available for inspection as it's very easy to get to.

The VCM system has failed and caused oil to seep past piston rings and gum/foul up spark plugs. This is a known issue by Honda but they won’t do anything about it.

Honda Odyssey 2019 slips during highway speed and has no acceleration while the engines rpm goes up. Very dangerous at highway speed and then will have a large clank noise and go into gear. Honda doesn't acknowledge the issue with their 9 speed transmission but their are tons of complaints on the web with the same issue I have. It happens at lower speed too at stop lights and is a safety concern for me when my wife is driving out children around.

The rear hatch door closed with me standing under it and I injured my arm trying to stop the door from closing on me. The door will not stop closing even with a person there. This is very dangerous! The mechanic said that we need to replace the rear struts- this car is only 3 years old!

- #11588695May 14, 2024VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL, UNKNOWN OR OTHER, ENGINE
Since 2020, we have noticed that the 2018 Honda Odyssey we own will not accelerate when the gas pedal is pressed. There is a noticeable delay between 1 to 3 seconds for the vehicle to accelerate. Once the vehicle accelerates, it does so at an increased rate of speed that is dangerous and scary. This has led to 100+ near miss collisions with pedestrians and other oncoming vehicles at 4-way lighted intersections, highway on-ramps and other driving scenarios. This has caused me and my family traumatic stress (injury) as we've had so many close calls due to Honda's manufacturing failures and failures to address this problem. We have to drive extra cautiously and under stress in anticipation of the acceleration delay. We took to the dealership several times and they said there appears to be no issue even though I'm certain they didn't do thorough test drive to inspect problem. We will seek legal remedies if NHTSA and Honda will not address this defect that is being reported by hundreds of other 2018-19 Honda Odyssey owners.

The engine. I have a 2016 Honda Odyssey. All scheduled maintenance has always been done on this vehicle. I have all the documentation. And I mean it has been babied. It has 110,000 miles. Driving one morning last week and the car just seized up. No warning. No previous warning light. Had it towed to the dealership. The Variable Cylinder Management system had allowed a build up of gunk in the engine. Need an engine rebuild.$5600. Honda just had a recall for cars of the same model manufactured before 2014 for the same issue. As for safety having your engine seize up on the highway is dangerous.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? the tailgate will not open. Yes, I can have it inspected. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? This limits the ability to use the tailgate. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? I have brought the car into the dealership to fix the tailgate. The motor was replaced and they stated they sealed the back to prevent water from getting in. It has since broken again and currently it will not open. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? The first time it broke the dealership inspected and fixed the problem. It is now broken again and I haven't brought it into the dealership yet. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? I got a tailgate error multiple times, also the battery was draining really quickly - which I think was due to the trunk issue.

On April April the Engine light came on the dash. The vehicle was independently inspected on April [XXX]. The number one cylinder spark plug misfired due to oil leak caused by vehicle cylinder management system never identified in the 711 page owners manual, warning or recall from manufacturer or dealer Honda of Escondido to the serial owner of two 2004 and 2011 Honda Odysseys or notice of NORCAL USDC class actin lawsuit despite twenty years at same address Honda has hidden the problem and chain causation to fool EPA CAFE standards despite the safety danger of engine malfunction and failure. Honda proposes a false solution of piston replacement citing unpublished Technical Bulletin due to repeat later failure at Buyers cost instead of Honda Owners recommendation of proven disconnection of VCM system at a fraction of the cost. Water leaked into the back of my van through the plastic molding at the top of the lift gate. I was told the water ruined the control module. The part I was told would rrun $850 to replace. I looked the control module online at a gunuine Honda parts catalogue & it's $121. They tell me there is no guarantee that this will work. If it does not, then they recommend the replacement of the rear wiring harness which lists at the same Honda parts site fo $2,101.64 but this dealership wants to charge $8,500 plus $900 for new carpeting. Looking at the auto blogs, it seems that this is a recurring issue with the 2018-2019 Odysseys.

Flashing check engine light came on. Took this to the dealership and they found that one of the cylinders misfired and a sparkplug has fouled oil. Piston rings needed to be replaced. This happened because of oil buildup when 3 of the cylinders stop firing when the engine is in "fuel efficient" mode. As I understand it, the vehicle design is to turn off half the cylinders when I drive efficiently and that causes buildup over time. This is a ticking timebomb that will eventually cause this damage and render the vehicle undrivable.
